He has been nominated for Academy Awards and ASC Awards in Best Cinematography. Dean Raymond Cundey was born on March 12, 1946 in Alhambra, California. His father was a salesman for the credit information provider Dun & Bradstreet while his mother was a housewife. Cundey grew up as a fan of the movies and used his father¿s 8 mm film camera to shoot home movies. ¿Being fascinated by the different world movies could create¿, Cundey developed an interest in production design, and in ninth grade wrote an essay hoping to become a Hollywood production designer. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: distinction, University of Manchester (Institute for Development Policy and Management), course: Perspectives on Development, language: English, abstract: In the mid 1980s development studies experienced a crisis, the often called impasse of de-velopment theory and policy (Schuurmann 1993). The reasons can be found on the level of development thinking and of ¿real-world changes and problems¿ (Simon 2003: 6). Devel-opment thinking got stuck in a cul-de-sac as both grand meta-narratives of development the-ory ¿ Modernisation theory and radical Marxist approaches ¿ lost their hegemony: radical alternative theories, based on Marxist and neo-Marxist political economy were discredited by the collapse of socialism. Modernisation theory, based in neoclassical economics did not seem to deliver many benefits as economic growth turned out to produce more ecological, social and economical problems than it solved (ibid.). It became clear that growth and the neo-liberal agenda with its structural adjustment programs (SAP) in the 1980s and 1990s was not necessarily connected to other development goals like employment creation, reduc-tion of inequality and poverty or the provision of basic needs. The acceleration of globalisation and with it the questioning of the nation state as a ¿trusted point of reference¿ (Schuurman 2000: 7) of development studies intensified the crisis of de-velopment theory. Moreover new theoretical approaches like feminism, post modernism and post colonialism, and the growing recognition of heterogeneity of the third world, challenged development studies and theory even more (Schuurman 1993).There have been two major reactions to the impasse of development theory and policy. The first reaction was the search for development alternatives with the intention of reforming and redefining the goals of development. The second reaction, post development thinking, was more radical as it rejects development as a whole. However, development studies and practice survived the impasse and is back on the agenda: ¿a flourishing industry centred on social capital and social development has arisen in the World Bank, the UNDP and other multilateral institutions¿ (Hart 2001: 649). This paper aims to review alternative development (section 2) and post development (section 3), and analyses which contributions have helped to overcome the impasse.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: A-Grade with Distinction, South Bank University London (Faculty of Art and Human Sciences), course: European Policy, language: English, abstract: The subject of this essay is the implementation of the subsidiarity-principle in the EC's legal order. While EC-laws have supremacy over national laws and become a part of the national legal order, self-standing national laws are applicable where the EC has no legislative competence. In this aspect, the EC¿s system is comparable to e.g. the German federal system. The essay shows that the EC¿s legislative system balances the powers of the supranational and the national level by certain legal instruments: The principle of ¿limited empowerment¿, the distinction between exclusive and competitive competences and the necessity of a ¿legal basis¿ for every supranational legislative act. As their justiciability is essential for the lower levels¿ protection from power centralisation the Member States can litigate at the European Court of Justice against ¿lack of competence¿ when the EC meddles in affairs for which it is not empowered. The theoretical implementation as well as the ¿ sometimes unsatisfying ¿ practical application of these instruments is illustrated on the examples of two EC-directives on the ban of tobacco advertisements and the German litigation against them for ¿lack of competence¿.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Information Management, grade: 2:1, University of West Scotland, course: Professional, Legal and Ethical Issues in IT, language: English, abstract: From humble beginnings in the late 1970¿s, when they were considered to be a passing fad and catered mostly to a niche of technology lovers, the video game industry has mushroomed and now caters to a huge market worth $7.1 billion in the United States alone. However, despite this level of popularity and the fact that video games are fast eclipsing Hollywood as the premier entertainment industry, the amount of research that has gone into the effects of games is still insignificant. The purpose of this paper, then, is to investigate existing research into this field, and see if there is any basis behind the reasoning that video games actually promote violence in real life, or whether this is just a tide that has caught on due to sensationalist reporting.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: A-Grade with distinction, South Bank University London (Faculty for Art and Human Sciences), course: Postgraduate Course on European Policy, language: English, abstract: This essay examines the theoretical background and the practical application of the EU's ¿antitrust policy¿. As mergers are one way for firms to gain a ¿dominant position¿ in the market, the Commissionapplies the merger regulation to control such developments. The operation of this policy is analysed with the case study of a prohibited merger of ¿Ryan Air¿ and ¿Aer Lingus¿. The case also shows the high degree of legislative and executive powers the EU-institutions have gained in the significant economic area of competition policy.Although seemingly of purely economic purposes, EU competition policy serves ¿integrative¿ purposes too. ¿EU-Integration¿ can be defined as the EU-Member States voluntarily foregoing their power to formulate only national political and legal measures. Instead they formulate common policies which are determined in a coop-erative process of decision making. Cooperation can either take place in an intergovernmental framework or by transferring national sovereignty to the EU-institutions with the subsequent subjugation of national law under EU Law. Since the Treaty of Rome in 1957 expressed the determination of the European Economic Community¿s Member States to build an ¿ever closer union¿, economic integration parented EU-integration. With the new Treaties from the Single European Act onwards other than economic policies were added to the EU¿s agenda, e.g. cultural policy, foreign or security policy, but economic integration stayed a top priority. The EU¿s success is still believed to depend on its economic success and its ability to let the majority of the EU¿s citizens profit from it. Economic failure could undermine people¿s acceptance of the renunciation of national political independence. Therefore the Commission strives to ensure the Single Market¿s success, among other things by applying a competition policy with merger controls.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Essay from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), course: British Institutions (Landeskunde), language: English, abstract: Broadly speaking, Thomas Hobbes¿ image of man was genuinely pessimistic. The proof for this claim may be found in the first book of Leviathan, in which Hobbes explains his view of the human nature, its soul and its mechanisms. Leviathan was not Hobbes¿ first attempt to give such a general overview, and when he claimed that ¿Homo homini lupus¿ (Man is a wolf to man), it was firstly not him who coined the phrase (it first appeared around 1500), and secondly not in Leviathan but nine years earlier in De Cive. The idea that ¿Man is a wolf to man¿ sums up many of Hobbes¿ theories in a single phrase. However, it should be noted that the sentence so often quoted as summarising Hobbes¿ theories continues, ¿Man is an arrant wolf to man, and man to man is a God.¿ The second half is often forgotten but it is vitally important to remember it in order to fully understand what might be seen as the first coherent and scientific political theory. How can man to man be a wolf and a God simultaneously Hobbes¿ image of man was not only pessimistic but ambiguous too.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Sussex, language: English, abstract: Prior to the eighteenth and nineteenth century, childhood was not considered a separate stage of development. People at that time rather thought of children as miniature adults without a legal status. Due to new upcoming theories of philosophers such as John Locke or Jean-Jacques Rousseau however, children were seen in a new light. Thus, from the late eighteenth century onwards, parents slowly began to look at their children as individuals with concerns, wishes and fears much different from the adult. This new perception of childhood initiated authors to write literature both for and about children, which ultimately led to a new literal genre that we nowadays take for granted: children's literature. The following essay will compare the attitudes towards the child in children's literature of the Victorian Age with the attitude portrayed in inter-war children's literature. It will explore how the perception of the child in the nineteenth century changed, how this change is reflected in the fiction of the time and how it affected the children's literature of the inter-war period. It will argue that whereas early children's literature was mostly didactic and addressing the adult rather than the child reader, novels of the middle and late nineteenth century concentrated more on young readers and their specific needs and desires by introducing a more entertaining and fabulous style of writing. The essay will then take a closer look at children's literature of the early twentieth century and demonstrate that fiction of that period continued to put the child in the focus of attention while at the same time dealing with new topics and offering ways of escapism with respect to the threat of the Second World War.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: Sehr gut, University of Münster (Englisches Seminar), course: Literature and the Media, language: English, abstract: ¿The importance of writing lies in its creating a new medium of communication between men. Its essential service is to objectify speech, to provide language with a material correlative, a set of visible signs. In this material form speech can be transmitted over space and preserved over time; what people say and think can be rescued from the transitoriness of oral communication.¿If one reads the quotation given above, there soon arises the question of what was before mankind invented writing. Goody speaks of the ¿transitoriness of oral communication¿. Did people know nothing about their past How did a particular tribe constitute their identity These questions will be briefly responded to in the following chapter. Subsequently, the focus will be on different writing systems, especially on the alphabetic one and its impact on human cognitive skills. Then, the phenomenon of restricted literacy will be shown by giving the examples of China, India and Tibet. Thereafter, a leap from Asia to ancient Greece, the cradle of the modern alphabet, is made and then, with reference to Plato, some negative consequences of writing will be illustrated. The last chapter deals with the invention of the printing press and its great impact on literacy.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: B, Uppsala University, course: Education and Reform Strategies in Sweden, language: English, abstract: IntroductionSweden is the third largest country in the European Union after France and Spain. It has approximately 9 million inhabitants thereof ca. 1 million immigrants . Till the end of August 2006 there had 64,681 Immigrants been given excess to Sweden. So the population is heterogeneous and is concentrated in mainly three areas of the country.¿In an international comparison, the Swedish overall rate of participation in education is one of the highest.¿ The basic principle of education in Sweden is equality. This means equality of opportunities / access but also equality of outcomes / results. Everybody in Sweden must have access to an equivalent, uniform education, regardless of sex, irrespective of their social or ethnic backgrounds or their place of residence, because a well-educated society is a prerequisite for the expansion of the country¿s economic and the further development of the Swedish welfare state. There is also a big awareness of the importance of research and development. Due to this the cost for the education system in Sweden are very high, among the highest in the world .In the following pages I want to outline the Swedish educational system. I will start with a sketch of the reforms and according to the lights of this essay I will begin with the 20th century. The goal is to shed light on the needs of the society and on political reasons of the reforms. Furthermore I will represent an overview of the today¿s system and discuss the differences between the ¿old¿ and the ¿new¿ strategies as well as advantages and disadvantages. The History of Sweden¿s Education ¿ short ReviewIn the 19th century Sweden rapidly transformed from an agricultural, traditional society into an industrialised society. During this industrialisation and also democratisation the well-known Swedish model developed (1920s). By this is the specific model of a social welfare system is meant. It was characterized by centralism, universalism and cooperation between the capital and labour (consensus). At that time the focus was on developing a (social) welfare system this includes also focus on the education system. In this inclusive and centralised welfare state, science was a tool for modernising society in large reforms. The peak was reached in the 1970s. During this decade the demands for decentralisation as well as pluralism increased.[.]BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Examination Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 78/100, The University of Surrey (Surrey University), course: Production and Operations Management MBA P/T, language: English, abstract: Operations strategy can be defined as the strategic decisions and tactics which set the role, objectives and activities of a firm. It derives from the firm¿s capabilities, resources and processes, seeking to deliver competitive advantage to winning customers through meeting their needs. Competitive factors that are significant in winning customers¿ business are order winners. Improvements of these factors will likely result in gaining more business to the firm. In order for a firm to have a competitive advantage, it must understand and provide products and services whose factors create order winners for its customers. As a precursor, factors which customers have a certain minimum expected level from are defined as order qualifiers that firms should conform to. Therefore business decisions should be thought of in terms of order winning and order qualifying criteria, designed to win customers and drive business growth to the firm.A firm can outperform rivals only if it can establish a difference that it can preserve. This could be delivering great value to customers or creating comparable value at a lower cost, or both. Such differentiation arises from both the choice of performance objectives activities and how they are performed, or deliberately choosing a different set of activities to deliver a unique mix of value or perform similar operational activities better than rivals.Operations managers should decide on which of the sub-dimensions of these five performance objectives (Figure 1) they wish to excel at, and how they are going to configure the operation to do so.Figure 1: The Multiple Dimensions of theFive Operations Performance ObjectivesThe goal of this paper is to investigate and compare operations strategies of two manufacturing-based and two service-based companies. The paper takes an integrated evaluation approach of each firm¿s prioritised performance objectives from a requirements and operations capability point of view, as well as focusing on line of fit strategy and tactics to achieve competitive advantage through examining their process design, capabilities management and resources management.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. 24 pp. Deutsch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7, University of Hull, language: English, abstract: Wal-Mart is the leading company in retail markets worldwide, with a net sale of $ 344,992 million in 2007 (Wal-Mart, 2007). Recently, its one-day sales topped the GDPs of thirty-six sovereign countries.'If it were a Independent Republic of Wal-Mart, it would be China's sixth largest export market, and its economy would rank thirtieth in the world, right behind Saudi Arabia's' (Moreton, 2006, 59)Many would argue that Wal-Mart is 'the face of retail globalization' (Helen, 2008, 10). Nevertheless, this multinational company had to struggle through testing times to reach this status. The growth of any corporation is neither assured, nor a straightforward process - Wal-Mart's development was not only connected with executive ambition, motivation, progression and new opportunities; but also inevitably uncertain times, unnecessary costs, legitimacy and resistance. This consequently lead to Wal-Mart's failing in certain markets, and for this reason the board of directors need to comprehend why these different events occurred, as well as considering possible approaches to overcrossing certain barriers. This work takes a closer look at how Wal-Mart became so influential, which will be done through considering their history until present, and their strategy. Specifically discussed will be whether Wal-Mart adapted their global strategy in different countries, and if so, how such adaption was implemented. 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 1,3, University of Siegen (Forschungskolleg 615), course: Narration and Film, language: English, abstract: For a long time, most Hollywood directors stuck to a certain kind of narrative strategies to convey their view of the world to the recipient. Movie-conventions were therefore set from the beginning of profitable movie making and were fastened by the rise of big movie studios. In recent modern movies however, some directors have laid extreme interest on not sticking to the conventions and established a kind of non-narrative technique. As a result some of the most astonishing movies of the 90ies and the new millennium were created. The success of some of these movies can be explained by two facts. First of all, the abolishing of movie conventions resulted in the filmic reproduction of stories that had before been said to be unfit for filmic expression.Secondly the movies created drew their fascination from a non-understanding. With no classical movie conventions aligned, these movies seemed disturbing and frightening but it is also this disturbance that mesmerizes the viewer. In this essay I will try to outline in which way narrative conventions are abolished in modern productions and what effect this has on the spectator. To reduce the amount of information and to exemplify certain points I will stick to Cameron Crowe¿s movie Vanilla Sky (2001) which is based on the motion picture Arbre los Ojos (1997) by Alejandro Amenabar. The choice is justified by a rather confusing structure of the film which corresponds perfectly to the new way of moviemaking and also by the roots of the motion picture in an Off-Hollywood production area. These roots show that, although many non-classical movies have earned a lot of reputation, most moviemakers stick to conventions and that inventions are still entrenched in alternative cinema.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Law - Civil / Private / Trade / Anti Trust Law / Business Law, grade: A (1,0), New York University School of Law, language: English, abstract: Corporate law aims at protecting shareholders from being subject to personal liability for the risks of conducting business. The state created a corporate fiction which is a separate legal entity and distinctive from the shareholders and which offers the primary advantage of limited share-holder liability. The underlying notion is to encourage shareholders to provide capital and take on risky investments. In this way, the risk is shifted towards third parties and costs are external-ized. Overall, this investor attitude encourages economic development. Hence, limited liability can be seen as the ¿cornerstone of capitalism¿. However, as moral hazard comes into play, the externalization costs might exceed the benefits and, thus, damage third parties. In order to pro-mote justice, the presumption of limited liability must be occasionally rebutted and personal li-ability imposed on shareholders. This concept known as piercing the corporate veil will be elabo-rated on in detail in this paper. The doctrine is of crucial importance since it is the most litigated issue in corporate law. Regrettably, it is also among the most confusing areas of law. ¿¿Pierc-ing¿ seems to happen freakishly. Like lightening, it is rare, severe, and unprincipled.¿The objective of this paper is to lift the confusion of the doctrine and answer the question whether piercing the corporate veil is a sound concept. Moreover, it will be analyzed whether it is the pre-vailing alternative in dealing with the moral hazard problem of limited liability. Therefore, Part I will start with an explanation of piercing and the historical development of the doctrine. Competing doctrines of piercing will be presented and form the basis for the subsequent analysis of the main requirements for piercing. To illustrate the application of the doctrine, Part II will discuss four landmark cases. In Part III, the interplay of limited liability and veil-piercing will be as-sessed in different contexts of law. Afterwards, Part IV will elaborate the suitability of the con-cept compared to different alternatives. Finally, a conclusion will be drawn and the initial ques-tion will be answered.[.]BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 78, Stellenbosch Universitiy, course: Comparative Political Economy, language: English, abstract: Botswana is described as the ¿African miracle¿ (Samatar, 1999), as an ¿exception¿(Good, 1992), or as ¿a rare example of an African state that used its bonanza ofmineral riches wisely¿ (Meredith, 2006:285). However, critique verbalized by Taylor(2003) and Good (1992) has shown that Botswanäs economic history is not a puresuccess story; even it illustrates a positive example of African developmentcompared to almost all the other African countries. To analyze Botswanäs economichistory I will date back to the beginning of the 1900s. At this time, Botswanäs eightmain chiefdoms dominated regional African trade. The indigenous elite welcomedtrade with European settlers who arrived in this period. While Botswanäs neighborcountries experienced the process of incorporation into the modern world-economyalready, Botswana started to shift into the external arena of the global economy. Thisessay will show how Botswana is and has incorporated into the modern worldeconomyreferred to Immanuel Wallerstein¿s modern world-system theory. I will startwith an overview about Botswanäs actual trade situation to be able to locate thecountry within the global division of labor. Afterwards the paper analyses the historyof Botswanäs shift into the external arena of the modern world-system followed by itsincorporation. Furthermore, I will illustrate Botswanäs economic development sincethe incorporation. A second part of Botswanäs history deals with the economy-basedclass structure and how it shaped the political history since Botswana achievedpolitical independence in 1966. I will argue that the class structure, as alreadyindicated, has to be understood in the context of pre-colonial and colonialdevelopment. After all, I will point out what important contemporary political-economicfeatures of Botswana are not accounted for in my world-systems-based analysis. Theessay will finish with a short conclusion to draw a statement about a world-systembased analysis about Botswanäs political-economy.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Law - Miscellaneous, grade: B+, The University of Hong Kong (Faculty of Law), course: Corporate Governance and Shareholder Remedies, language: English, abstract: In Germany, ¿co-determination¿ has a long tradition. Beginning in the late 19th century, the German co-determination system has been developed over more than 100 years to become one of the most dominant co-determination systems in the world.Employees¿ co-determination in Germany becomes visible in two different forms: employees¿ participation in ¿works councils¿ (¿Betriebsrat¿) at establishment level (¿betriebliche Mitbestimmung¿) and labour (employees and trade union representatives) participation in ¿supervisory boards¿ on board level (¿Unternehmensmitbestimmung¿).German corporate law distinguishes between the ¿management board¿ (¿Vorstand/ Geschäftsführung¿) and the ¿supervisory board¿ (¿Aufsichtsrat¿) (¿two-tier boards system¿ as opposed to the Anglo-American ¿one-tier system¿). Co-determination on board level refers to the representation of employees on the supervisory board. Depending on the industry, the corporation is operating in and the size of labour force, the supervisory board composes of one third (¿third part participation¿) to half (¿parity participation¿) of employees¿ representatives.¿Corporate governance¿, the regulations for legal and actual distribution of management and supervision tasks between the supervisory board, the management board and the shareholders has lead in many countries to the development of codes since the 1990s. Germany also has drawn up a corporate governance code meanwhile ¿ the ¿German Corporate Governance Code¿. The code builds together with the ¿Stock Corporation Act¿ and the different co-determination acts the legal framework for corporate governance principles in Germany. It aims to make Germany¿s corporate governance rules transparent for both national and international investors, thus strengthening confidence in the management of German corporations. The code addresses with its ¿recommendation¿ and ¿suggestions¿ to all major criticisms from the international community against German corporate governance, for instance the inadequate focus on shareholder interests and the two-tier system of management board and supervisory board. In between time the ¿German Corporate Governance Code¿ has achieved a high level of acceptance; in particular in the DAX companies, who set the trend in corporate governance in Germany.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Miscellaneous, grade: 58, Stellenbosch Universitiy, course: Political Economy of China, language: English, abstract: The next Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 are a major interest of the Chinese leadership. By 2008, China aims to have spent $35 billion on the games (¿Beijing¿s Olympic¿, 2007), dwarfing the $8.7 billion spent by Greece. The Economist (2007) has calculated that this amount makes up more than 43 percent of the total for all the games, including Beijing, since Montreal¿s in 1976. The summer Olympics shall crown 30 years of successful economic reform. They will symbolize the outside world that China is on its way to reach world power status. The symbolic character to hold the world¿s biggest event seems to overshadow other impacts such an event can have (Owen, 2005). But, Uu Jingmin, vice chairman of the Beijing 2008 organizing committee, believes that the Olympics will contribute not only to economic development, it will bring also social progress for the whole country (in Hua, 2004). The Organization committee has proclaimed three major topics: the People's Olympics, the High-Tech Olympics, and the Green Olympics (Hua, 2004). But, it is highly controversial, if mega events are at the end economically and social beneficial for a venue city or not. The output of Olympic Games is ¿incalculable, or, if calculable best considered as estimates only¿ (Hiller, 1998). At some points, the Olympics in Beijing can even lead to economic or social damage. To draw a conclusion about the whole range of impacts of global sports-events is difficult because of a lack of available data. Furthermore, China as a whole is still a developing country and faces massive socio-economic challenges. The impact of the Olympic Games will be small in regard to Chinäs general socio-economic challenges facing Chinese leadership in the twentyfirst century. A final conclusion, how useful the Olympic Games will be outside the arena, especially in the long term, can be only drawn, when the games are already over. Anyway, this work shall clarify which impacts the Olympic Summer Games can have on Chinäs social and economic challenges. Therefore, I split the essay in two parts. The first part will deal with economic impacts and implications resulting from Beijing¿s successful bid for the Summer Games. The second part describes social aspects of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. I try to describe not only the impacts on the challenges for China. The Chinese capital as venue deserved attention as well.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Marburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Postmodern and/or Postcolonial:Contemporary Writing from Britain and the Commonwealth, language: English, abstract: Zadie Smith¿s novel 'White Teeth' deals with families and generations from diverse ethnic backgrounds; and in the four main chapters Archie 1974, 1945, Samad 1984, 1857, Irie 1990, 1907, and Magid, Millat and Marcus 1992, 1999, she approaches them from several angles. As a result, there has been a discussion on who is to be treated as the central character in this novel. One possible answer to this is offered by Nina Shen Rastogi:The main character in White Teeth isn¿t a character in any traditional sense ¿ it¿s the city of London itself. Smith¿s goal is less to paint a portrait of any particular character than it is to create a large-scale character sketch of a particular place and a particular time. White Teeth is about the foibles of a community of near-strangers and almost-friends as it collectively stumbles towards an uncertain future. The paper will investigate this approach by dealing with London as it is depicted in this postcolonial novel. After a working definition on the diversely discussed notion of postcolonialism (I.1), there will be a closer look on London, both as a physical location (I.2.a) and a literary region (I.2.b). The main issues will be the history of immigration, facts about multiculturalism today, and a brief look on how the colonial legacy has been depicted in postcolonial literature in London. A conclusion (I.3) will summarize the results and present some main questions for the analysis of White Teeth (II).Here, the paper will take a look on the role of the characters interacting with each other and on how they compromise between their cultural legacy and London¿s society (II.1). This will be the major part of the analysis. In two short chapters, this view will be extended by the use of location (II.2) and language (II.3).The conclusion finally tries to sum up the main aspects gathered in this line of argument.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: A, San Diego State University, course: Seminararbeit im MBA Studiengang, language: English, abstract: Today¿s business environment is facing more challenges than it has ever faced before. Whether it be globalization, shorter product life cycles, industry-wide consolidations, or the rapid advancements that have been made in information technology ¿ all these factors have contributed to a steady increase in competitive pressure on domestic and foreign markets. In an economy that is increasingly becoming more volatile, organizations find it more difficult to achieve or maintain their competitive advantage.A way of overcoming these challenges and establishing advantages has been through optimization of the supply chain. Initially, these improvement efforts were limited to areas within the organization, such as inventory, quality, or the manufacturing process itself. In the early nineties, however, when the American retail and consumer goods industry was experiencing stagnating revenues and, at the same time, rising costs, an increase in productivity was hardly to be realized. At that time, aggressive pricing policies were seen as the only approach to gain market share, but the consequences, mainly a negative impact on margins and profits, made it an unsustainable business practice (Seifert, 2003). This led the retail industry to recognize that real gains could only be realized through open cooperative partnerships between retailers and manufacturers. As the supply chain improvement initiatives progressed, they began to include collaboration between the manufacturer, its suppliers, and clients. Although collaboration between trading partners was known as an efficient method for improving forecast accuracy, increasing service, and reducing costs, it was not until then that supply chain partners systematically devised processes that would move the information to where it could add value and, thereby, facilitate supply chain coordination. Since then, collaboration has been referred to as the driving force behind effective supply chain management (Horvath, 2001).One of the latest trends in supply chain management, CPFR is advertized by many authors, consultants, and software vendors as one of the most promising practices of collaboration so far (Ireland & Crum, 2005). The purpose of this paper is to examine the validity of this statement. In doing so, it will analyze the success potential associated with CPFR and, based on pilot results, evaluate the benefits and challenges that arise with its implementation.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Aarhus, course: Culture and International Business, language: English, abstract: Going abroad is nowadays much more easy due to the continuous globalization process with lower transportation costs and immediate information exchange. Especially during the last decades firms have increasingly committed themselves to global markets in order to exploit cost advantages through lower labour costs or in order to follow the demand for their products (Barkema et al. 1996:164). A firm seeking to perform in a foreign market by establishing a business function (e.g. production management, distribution) has to choose the best mode of entry which is very relevant for the success of foreign operations and therefor an important issue. But foreign market entry does not come along without any costs especialy in cultural distant countries. The impact of differences in national culture, measured as cultural distance between the home country of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) and the country of operation is a very important issue and therefor worth to examine. The main questions the paper tries to answer is: In which ways does culture matter in the internationalization process of a firm How does culture affect the choice of market entry and which problems arise due to cultural differneces Which impediments regarding culture have firms to deal with when going to China Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Leadership and Human Resource Management - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.3, University of applied sciences, Munich, language: English, abstract: Employees take a centre stage in companies and play the essential role for business success. Hence, companies have the highest interest to recruit and keep high qualified manpower. In this study, an overview about recruitment methodologies is provided. Additionally, benefits and drawbacks of recruiting methods are analyzed and compared.Recruitment is the discovering and obtaining of potential applicants for actual or anticipated organizational vacancies. Except the recruiting methods applied, many factors could influence the recruiting efforts: image of the organization, attractiveness and nature of the job, internal policies, government requirements, and recruiting budget. There are a high number of recruiting methods which can be classified in different ways: active and passive, internal and external, print and digital methods. The principle sources of recruiting employees include internal search, advertisements (in print or digital media), employee referrals, employment agencies, educational institutions and unsolicited applicants. Recruitment alternatives such as temporary staffing services, employee leasing, and independent contractors can be used meaningfully to acquire the temporary manpower.Because of benefits and drawbacks of different recruiting methods, the task of HR management is to select and apply the right method for an efficient and effective recruiting. The recruiting process provides a basis for the selection of the right candidate and should be well accomplished.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,0, University of applied sciences, Munich, language: English, abstract: Starbucks is the world leader in the premium coffee market and has an amazing success story. In this study the key factors for the successes of Starbucks are analyzed. The distribution strategy of Starbucks, e.g. through coffee stores, grocery markets, and new retail channels, is investigated. Additionally, problems of the rapid expansion of Starbucks in national and international markets and their solutions are discussed.Starbucks sells not only its coffee; it sells the ¿Starbucks¿ experience¿. The company is successful to convey its vision to the customers. It can convince customers paying more for high-quality products and a new life style. Starbucks reached its goal to establish and leverage its powerhouse premium brand through rapid expansion of retail operations, introduction of new products and store concepts, as well as development of new distribution channels.Starbucks has revolutionized the coffee business. The main marketing strategy is to represent Starbucks¿ store as a ¿third place¿ between work and home. The company could increase the market share in existing markets and open stores in new markets rapidly. Additionally, Starbucks always tries to expand its products portfolio. The company cooperates and takes alliances with other companies to develop and distribute new products. As the result, Starbucks has developed from a local coffee bean roaster and retailer in the US to a multinational coffee and coffeehouse chain with more than 14,000 stores in 42 countries. The rapid expansion of Starbucks leads unfortunately to some serious problems. The company has to fight with the commoditization of Starbucks¿ brand because of a series of decisions which are necessary for the rapid business growth. Getting back to the score, being smarter in efforts of time, money, and resources, pushing innovation, and doing things necessary to once again differentiate Starbucks from all others are the keys for business success in the future.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.
