Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, course: Global Purchasing and Supply, language: English, abstract: Businesses aim to maximise their profits since the beginning of economic thinking. Hence, maximum efficiency and minimum costs play a key role within this thinking (Mankiw, 2011). In this context, purchasing gained much attention in terms of increasingly tough competition as the costs for purchased goods and services add up to around 50 per cent of the total costs for goods sold (COGS) on average (van Weele, 2010). This high proportion illustrates that purchasing encompasses more than the operational buying process. In fact, it is a function that comprises various activities. Van Weele (2010, p.8) defines purchasing as ¿the management of the company¿s external resources in such a way that the supply of all goods, services, capabilities and knowledge which are necessary for running, maintaining and managing the company¿s primary and support activities is secured at the most favourable conditions¿. Consequently, all activities to manage the company¿s external resources are included in purchasing functions. In recent years it seems this management has become more difficult due to circumstances such as economic, financial and political crises. Even acts of God can lead to greater volatility and uncertainty that may impact the process of purchasing. Hence, in order to cope with the likely tough economic climate in 2012, businesses have to reflect possible strategies. Moreover, due to the increased importance of purchasing and supply management, risks as well as challenges related to these functions have to be pointed out in order to evaluate its contribution for managing the economic situation.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Presentation (Handout) from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, , course: Managing People in Project Environments, language: English, abstract: Many companies already operate in a number of foreign countries. More are following each year. The concept of 'global working' has become an accepted modus operandi for more and more companies both in the United Kingdom and other countries. As a result, people at all levels within their organisations have opportunities to work with people from other countries. This is not an easy task and brings with it some cultural difficulties. These need to be managed carefully and with due consideration to everyone involved.Working with people whose values and beliefs are different from your own, can often lead to costly misunderstandings and even business failures. However, when successfully managed, differences in culture can lead to innovative business practices and faster and better learning within the organisation. People will get on better with their colleagues from other countries once they have learned more about cultural differences. They will learn that their own views are not the only ones, and that the variety of views coming from the different cultures can actually lead to better business solutions that are good for the benefit of everyone.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, , language: English, abstract: AbstractThis work aims to propose a qualitative ¿starter model¿ for a new software defect prevention for better Software Quality. Software defect prevention methods and models have made substantial progress in recent years. But this still falls short of the needs of today and the future. One contribution is a qualitative model that takes into account key determinants and their interlinked effects. The model is based on System Dynamics and the elements involved in the software development process, e.g. the human being, management, members of staff, work psychology, quality, methods, organizations, customer, culture etc. Current research status comprises 15 identified important key determinants, their respective strength, interrelationships and dynamics. The model is operationalized with a software tool capable of modelling all the key determinants defined, their effect directions and other data of the comprehensive matrix they make up. With the research results made, the new defect prevention model shows promise. The research is due to continue further in order to contribute to improved defect prevention in the software development process. The number of key determinants, their respective strength etc. be will be 140 in the final research work. Keywords: Systemic, software, software development, Software-quality, defects, defect prevention, Determinants, System Dynamics, qualitative model, the human being, process, methods, technology, organization.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 36 pp. Englisch.

Of course also the picture of colourful quilts comes into my mind. Apart from that Amish society is on the one hand fascinating and on the other hand very mysterious to me: How could they accomplish to survive as a subculture which differs so much from the surrounding mainstream society What are the keystones of their faith Where do they come from Will they manage to remain unchanged in such a ¿ as they see it ¿ sinful, seductive and dangerous world In this paper I will try to answer all these questions. Moreover, I want to give a comprehensive idea of Amish lifestyle and philosophy in order that we as non-Amish can understand their way of life, which feels so strange and disconcerting to us.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 1,3, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institut für Fremdsprachliche Philologien), course: Seminar Westindian Slavery in Fiction, language: English, abstract: After attending the seminar West Indian Slavery in fiction I realized how little I knew about that cruel episode of history. The third novel we discussed named The Long Song by Andrea Levy was the most impressive to me and made me especially aware of the lack of knowledge I had about the alleged liberators of the slaves in the West Indies. After the first reading of The Long Song I thought the author uses the character of Robert Goodwin only to show how complex the issue of racism is and how even the ideology of abolitionism was undermined by segregation. But when we dealt with this topic in the seminar a discussion arose about how the meaning of the relationship towards July should be evaluated in that context. I could not comprehend in contrast to the other participants how the feelings Goodwin displays towards July can be interpreted as true love since I always had in mind how cold-heartedly he left her behind and even abducted the baby. At the end of the session I was neither convinced nor satisfied because if one accepts his feelings towards July as being true love, the question arouses what the author intended by portraying such a strange relationship. Therefore I want to try to take a closer look at this constellation in order to suggest a reason why Levy makes the new Overseer fall in love with the protagonist. More precisely I want to prove that the development of the character of Robert Goodwin and the experiences he collects within the novel make clear how a racist ideology has to fail in general. Furthermore in his case it is particularly shown how the social and economic restraints of his time destined the young man to fail.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Trier, language: English, abstract:I IntroductionThe study of humor dates back to the ancient times when Plato and Aristotle formulated first theories as to why people laugh (Attardo 1994:18-19). In the course of centuries humor has become a complex field of study with numerous researches that have been conducted in various disciplines (Schnurr 2010: 308-309). Hence, humor has also been given attention in the field of linguistics, especially in its branches semiotics, semantics and pragmatics. Due to the extensive research by linguists like Attardo (1994), Raskin (1985) or Norrick (1993), verbal humor has become a thoroughly investigated field these days. While Raskin¿s (1985) and Attordös (1994) research focuses on humor theories as well as analyzing the nature of jokes from a linguistic point of view, Norrick investigates the function of humor in the context of familiar conversations (Attardo 136- 137 , 145). However, it was not until recently that linguists have engaged with the analysis of humor in sitcoms; therefore comparatively few studies have been published in this area yet (Kalliomäki 2005: 4). This pragmatic approach to humor aims at investigating if humorous situations in the American sitcom ¿The Big Bang Theory¿ relate to the violation of the maxims of the cooperative principle. Moreover, this study analyzes which humor strategies are produced by the violation of the Gricean cooperative maxims to elicit the audience¿s laughter. The relevant research questions are:1) Do humorous situations relate to the violation of the maxims of the Grice¿s cooperative principle 2) If 1) is the case, what are the characteristics of the humor that is produced through the violation of a maxim (i.e. Which maxim is violated Which humor strategies are employed by whom and in which context )3) Does a character create humor by intention or unintentionally The qualitative analysis in this paper is supposed to contribute to a better pragmatic understanding of the humor of the sitcom ¿The Big Bang Theory¿. The data used in this study are obtained from the collection of scripts from season 1 and the DVD - recording. ¿The Big Bang Theory¿ has become one of the most popular sitcoms in the US. It deals with four nerdy characters, the two roommates and physicists Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter as well as their friends, astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali and the Jewish aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Markowitsch (including the famous patient E.D.), it is argued that this claim does not hold against the indication of empirical evidenve and the dissociation of memory systems and therefore the impact of Wittgenstein's thoughts on the debate remains unproven.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 11, University of Marburg, course: The Frontier in American History, language: English, abstract: Men and women had definitive roles and tasks at the American Frontier. The image of gender roles at the end of the 19th century is depicted in Laura Ingalls Wilder`s novel The Long Winter. It tells us the story of the Ingalls family`s hard time during blizzards during a hard and long winter. Besides Charles` and Almanzo`s efforts, the ¿strong, able-bodied [female] pioneers [¿] contribute considerably to the survival of their families¿ (McGinnis). The Long Winter ¿with its domestic ethos and its clearcut models of gender¿ (Romines 1997, 146) is a concrete example to illustrate the gender roles at the American Frontier. In this work the roles of frontier men and women are exemplified by Caroline`s, Charles` and Almanzo`s tasks and lives. Moreover, the girls Laura, Carrie and Mary Ingalls are being prepared to take over the gender roles adopted by their parents.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Mannheim, course: Neorealism, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the novel American Psycho by the American author Bret Easton Ellis and his place amongst other writers of the ¿blank generation¿. The term ¿blank generation fiction¿ will be defined by citing those literary critics who extensively examined this trend, namely Elizabeth Young, Graham Caveney and James Annesley.Based on their work it will be shown how violence in blank generation fiction has not to be taken literally but can adopt symbolic meaning. Furthermore we shall see in an anlysis of American Psycho how this symbolic meaning develops in this novel in direct relation to the vast consumerism and the hyperreal quality of life in the 1980s. It will be closely examined how the seemingly unmotivated murderous behaviour of the novel¿s main protagonist can be interpreted as a direct, logical, if exaggerated result of mass culture and the principles of the free market. Finally it will be examined how Ellis integrates chapters written in the style of music journalism into his novel to stress both the fragmentation of the main protagonist¿s mind by the media and the perversity of the consumer who can easily switch from witnessing an act of extreme violence to unworriedly reflecting on something like music, another mass cultural phenomenon.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Great Expectations and Hard Times by Charles Dickens, language: English, abstract: IntroductionThe following work is an analysis of the female characters in Charles Dickens¿s Great Expectations especially with regard to Victorian gender constructions and Dickens¿s image of women. Dickens¿s biography and the depiction of very diverse female characters in his novels stimulated the idea of a closer analysis.First of all, a short summary of Great Expectations is provided. Then, the Victorian construction of gender will be discussed. As will be shown, a very strict ideology regarding gender roles existed during the Victorian age. Obviously, Dickens must have been influenced by the ideas of his contemporaries which should then be presented in the novel.Another focus will be on how his relationships to women influenced his image of women and also, consequently, the depiction of his female characters in Great Expectations. Finally the female characters, with reference to Victorian gender roles and Dickens¿s image of women, will be analyzed in greater detail. The focus is on four women who I believe to be the most important female characters in the novel and powerful representatives of the author¿s image of women and Victorian gender construction.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, University of New Hampshire, course: English 550 - Graduate Studies in English Language, language: English, abstract: This scholarly research paper examines the substantial reasoning behind why African American Vernacular English is a true dialect of the English language. The AAVE controversy has been long debated by scholars and linguists alike. The debate is centered on two substantial ideas of its definition and genesis. The debate is split; half of the spectrum believes AAVE is simply an apathetic form of speech, while other concrete theories suggest that AAVE is a dialect of the English language that stems from the West African Slave Trade. This research paper not only analyzes a number of scholarly theories to credit the idea that AAVE is a true dialect of the English Language, but it also calls on a number of other variants to supplement the facts provided.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 14, University of Marburg, course: Problems of English Grammar, language: English, abstract: This work is titled ¿A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Sound System. Problems and Suggestions for Teaching.¿The features of sound in a language are systematically structured. They are divided into two main branches:(a) the branch of segmental features including consonants and vowels, and(b) the branch of supra-segmental features including stress, intonation, pause, juncture, and rhythm(Nasr 1997: 2).My paper refers to branch (a) and illustrates the differences between the English (RP) and German consonant and vowel systems. The resulting contrasts reveal the main difficulties German learners of English are confronted with, therefore, these need to be exposed in teaching (Kufner 1971: 36).After contrasting the sound systems, I will comment on the aim and importance of learning English pronunciation, and then I will explain the error degrees caused by the sound contrasts. Later, there is an overview of the most important qualifications of a phonetic teacher, and finally I will provide suggestions for teaching the pronunciation difficulties caused by the differences between the two languages.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Constance, course: British Literature & Culture, language: English, abstract: During the last two centuries, Frankenstein gained the reputation of a modern myth. Every generation gets to know Frankenstein within a new historical and social context. So it has to be said that the reception of Shelley¿s masterpiece changed over the years. The creature of Victor Frankenstein became the archetype of a monster, a model for many specters that followed.Mary Shelley was born on 30 August 1797 and died on 1 February 1851 at the age of 53. She was the daughter of the philosopher William Godwin and his wife Mary Wollstonecraft, who was known as a philosopher and feminist. Both her parents had talents in writing and this talent should be inherited to their daughter as well. In 1816 she married her lover, the famous poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. In the summer of 1816 the famous couple went on a journey to Switzerland, accompanied by Mary¿s stepsister Claire, who arranged for them a meeting with her lover Lord Byron. During their stay at the Villa Diodati in Geneva the group talked about science and inspired by some German ghost tales decided to have a ghost-story contest, which led to the initial draft of Frankenstein. Mary Shelley¿s tale is the only one of those stories which has been completed. The first edition of Frankenstein was released in 1818, another one in 1831, changed and corrected by Mary Shelley herself. The romantic period was among other things also the time of an enormous paradigm shift in science. The Frankenstein novel has this shift as a basis and combines scientific horror with elements of traditional Gothic fiction. The turn of the century also brought a growing interest in landscape and nature. In 1757 the Irish philosopher Edmund Burke released ¿A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful¿, which became the most important treatise on the concept of the sublime. This seminar paper shall examine the way in which Mary Shelley creates an atmosphere of terror in her novel. Therefore both the preface of the 1818 version of Frankenstein, written by Percy B. Shelley, as well as the 1831 introduction by Mary Shelley shall be analyzed on the author¿s original intention and the idea behind Frankenstein. Then a definition of the term ¿terror¿ will be given, followed by a chapter on the concept of the sublime as seen by Edmund Burke and Ann Radcliffe. The last chapter examines ¿terror¿ within the story itself, as well as the terror achieved through other features, for example the sublime.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: How Race Is Lived in America , language: English, abstract: IntroductionThe novel House Made of Dawn, first published in 1968, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1969. With the incorporation of Native materials into the Anglo-American novel Momaday introduced the Native American Renaissance at the end of the 1960s. And, indeed, as one of the first contemporary Native American writers Momaday employs on the one hand traditional oral tales, fragments of poetry and historical documents. On the other hand House Made of Dawn illustrates his ¿Western¿ fascination with structure, a literary device almost absent in oral storytelling or traditional Native American literature. The novel makes use of multiple points of view, stream-of-consciousness techniques, sudden changes of time and chronology, which are primarily achieved by flashbacks and flashforwards. Momaday¿s delight in imagery, especially of nature, reflect his study of Romantics¿ and Symbolists¿ work. The book¿s content, as well as that of other works by the author, is a reflection of Momaday¿s personal identity and the various cultural traditions that shaped it. The following literary analysis will therefore focus on the embedding of aspects of Momaday¿s identity and try to explain some of the cultural elements interwoven in the story. As the author repeatedly employs autobiographical materials, a short representation of his past seems indispensable.Due to the designated size of this paper, a detailed analysis of all interesting and noteworthy aspects seems impossible. Also, with regard to the interrelatedness of form and content, there won¿t be subdivisions separated by headlines within the analysis.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Cologne, course: Reading Post-colonial Australia , language: English, abstract: When we think of Australia, we associate certain images, experiences or even stereotypes with the country that is at the same time a continent, located on the southern hemisphere of the world. Indigenous people, the so-called Aborigines, modern and popular cities, beautiful beaches and an exotic flora and fauna and certain sights, such as Ayers Rock for example, account for a stereotypical representation of the land which in fact holds more appeal if you only take a closer look. These associations are very superficial and originate from a Eurocentric perspective, a term that will appear again later in this essay. Whether you regard Australia and its outline on the map as being on the southern hemisphere for example, simply depends from which angle of vision one looks at the country. Since the emergence of the Mercator Atlas, a certain view of the world has been established. Today, this view is still perceived as dominant and correct and is supposed to reflect reality. It¿s the underlying ideology of western European countries whose ideas of structuring the world by mapping and timing have also influenced theAustralian continent. More importantly, the colonists defined their identity by demarcating them from other cultures. What didn¿t conform to European standards wasn¿t perceived right and therefore had to be changed in order to adapt to conventional norms. Even todaythe connection between Australia and its former ruling British center and the impact of colonialism on post-colonial Australia becomes visible in everyday life and is also manifested in cultural discourses such as literature and film production. The aim of thisessay is to give an outline of the terms imperialism, colonialism and post-colonialism, their relationship and influence on the colonized country Australia and its impact upon the representation of indigeneity and race. Before concrete representation of characteristics that have to do with indigeneity and race will be examined, the reader will be provided with some background information to better understand the sometimes conflicting topic and its deep-set causes. The term representation will also be explained in detail, because it entails a process of seeing and perceiving the world from a dominant perspective that explains a certain depiction of instances such as the indigenous people. On the basis ofthe movie Samson and Delilah and the novel Coonardoo the reader will experience the power of representation by language, silence .Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: A+ (1,0), Sookmyung Women's University, course: Fair Trade and Social Enterprises, language: English, abstract: The importance of Fair Trade products for the world economy has been significantly growing within the last decade. In 2010, the global Fair Trade turnover reached ¿3.4 billion showing an upward trend with double-digit growing rates per year. One of the biggest selling markets for certified Fair Trade products is the European Union (EU) which is thus a crucial actor when it comes to promote and market Fair Trade goods (see attached table 1).Yet, besides the EU¿s effort of achieving a fairer international trading system, it can be argued that the EU might be even partially responsible for the misery in those countries. In this context the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU is controversially discussed. About ¿60 billion which account for 42% of the total EU budget are currently spent on agricultural subsidies. They are provided to European farmers to support and protect the internal agricultural market. Consequences for other agrarian countries are immense. In our research paper we want to investigate the paradox on Europe spending money on Fair Trade on the one hand, while dishing out harming subsidies on the other hand. We question whether it would be more beneficial for developing countries if Europe stepwise reduces its agricultural subsidies to a minimum rather than investing in Fair Trade.First of all, a brief introduction to the Fair Trade principles and its history is provided. The main efforts of the EU to achieve a fairer trading system are identified in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 will briefly present the basic principles of the EU¿s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) including the payment of direct farm subsidies to European farmers. Chapter 5 will reveal how Europe¿s agricultural subsidies influence the world market and which consequences arise for developing countries. A comparative analysis contrasting the fair trade concept and the reduction of subsidies is conducted in chapter 6. A conclusion is provided in chapter 7.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,0, Edinburgh Napier University, course: Economics of Business Strategy, language: English, abstract: Since the world¿s first airline company has been established (German Airship Transport Corporation in 1909), especially the new style of low-cost airlines increased the competition on the market for commercial flights. Towards the end of the century low-cost airlines offered first no-frills products at a low price. The concept originated in the U.S., before it spread to Europe in the early 1990¿s and subsequently to the rest of the world (Chan 2000). One main reason for the accelerated increase of low-cost flights can be seen in the EU enlargement, where open skies arrangements were extended. As a result low-cost routes were established by existing and new operators. The main characteristic of this new strategic orientation was the lower operating cost structure than this of the traditional market participants. The traditional airline industry had to face an essential change in the market, with an increase of competition and new business models.Focusing on Europe, there were only a few low-cost airlines before the year of 2000. However, today about 60 low-cost carriers moved mainstream in Europe with a total market share of 24%, whereas in Germany 23 low-cost airlines operate (Berster 2007).To evaluate the specific strategy of Germanwings it is necessary to set limits to the field of study. After introducing the company itself, the strategic position will be evaluated by focusing on Germany. Thus, Germanwings will be compared to the operators acting in this country. Therefore, it is useful to introduce a strategic mapping and the analysis of price practices focusing on Germanwings. Furthermore, important individual measures of the company will be explained which soften the impact of the above mentioned external influencing factors (PEST-analysis). Finally, some up-to-date measures of the company will conclude its strategic orientation.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Law - Public Law / Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Groningen, language: English, abstract: Climate change and climate protection can be considered as the most controversial and most discussed topics in the 21st century. Especially, since the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its 4th Assessment Report on Climate Change in 2007 stating that climate change is indeed mainly caused by human activities. Hence, policy-makers all over the world are taking responsibility for climate protection in order to compensate for society¿s faults. 1The European Union sees itself as one of the driving forces behind fighting climate change and is keen to create and encourage policies or developments that might support their efforts. As proposed in the Lisbon and Gothenburg in 2000 and 2001, the European Union wants to be the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy with a sustainable growth, more social cohesion as well as respect for the environment. One of the opportunities to achieve this objective is bioenergy, or in particular biofuels, which may allow for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, more energy security as well as the promotion of sustainable development globally and the creation of new markets. Biofuels can be defined as solid, liquid or gas fuel consisting of, or derived from biomass, which is composed of living and recently dead biological material. The best-known products are bioethanol and biodiesel, which are first generation biofuels derived from renewable resources, in particular food crops. Second generation biofuels, e.g. lignocellulosic biomass, vary in the fact that they are manufactured from non-food crops. To use this opportunity, the European Union crowned its preceding efforts with respect to renewable energy sources like biofuels with the release of the ambitious climate and energy policy package in January 2008. It contained various proposals for Directives including binding targets for greenhouse gas reductions, energy savings and the share of renewable energy in the total energy consumption. As a result of the long-term policy support covered by the European Union, the biofuels production has increased rigorously.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

When people are confrontedwith the genre of crime fiction, they usually associate it with detective fiction or crime thrillers. Some of the most popular writers of crime fiction are Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, Raymond Chandler and Edgar Allan Poe and their inventions of such characters as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple and Philip Marlowe (Priestman 2003: preface). These works have shaped our understanding of crime literature profoundly and influenced the emergence of other crime fiction genres and their authors. On these grounds this essay will mainly focus on the emergence of a crime genre that is concerned with the American gangster and the myth of the mafia. To be more precise, I will concentrate on the mafia gangster in the United States and analyze his way to success and power. To better understand the phenomenon of the mafia gangster, I will give a brief account of American crime fiction followed by a description of the typical ingredients a successful crime novel has to have. Afterwards, I will present some information on the American gangster in general and explain the circumstances that facilitated his career in organized crime to become such an important part of American culture. Then I will proceed with the sudden appearance of the mafia gangster in the United States and comment on the etymology of the term mafia in order to explain how he became so important to the American culture. After the background information has been covered by the first three chapters, I will go on with the analysis of the phenomenon of the mafia in literature and on television. Therefore, the very popular contributions to the mafia genre produced by Mario Puzo, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and David Chase will be discussed. The Godfather, Goodfellas and The Sopranos will be the main subjects of interest to show how these works contributed to a general understanding of the mafia in the second half of the twentieth century. Finally, I will give a short account of the decline of the mafia in organized crime within the United States before the Conclusion will be presented.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.
