Softcover. Condition: Good. This book examines the landscape history of Japan. The most marked characteristic has been a tendency towards neat geometric lines drawn across the landscape, with a 'confusion' engendered by an apparent lack of order, hierarchy, and aesthetic. The landscape history approach, as suggested by the contributors of this book, places multiple factors (political, socio-economic, and cultural) in broader context with a cross-sectional analysis. Today, historical geography in Japan appears to be splitting into three approaches: integrated analysis, based on empirical inquiry; specific analysis, based on technological progress and data processing; and the contextual, perceptual, and behavioral perspectives. In practice, the three are progressing simultaneously, as well as interacting with each other. Historical-geographical techniques for reconstructing past landscapes have become popular among the practitioners of these disciplines. Historical geographers cooperate on survey projects of archaeological sites and, in the process, publish municipal histories. This volume is a collaboration that applies cutting-edge approaches to a variety of landscapes - such as urban districts, provincial capitals, and rural towns - and explores new frontiers in historical geography of Japan, covering the 6th century through the 20th century.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. After a swift and bloody regime change in 1998, Indonesia established democratic institutions. Democratization over the first two decades of the 21st century fundamentally transformed Indonesia as a nation-state; and with a population of approximately 270 million as of 2020, Indonesia is the third largest democracy in the world. This book presents twelve original chapters to discuss the achievements and challenges of Indonesia's transformation since the fall of Suharto's authoritarian regime in 1998.The fundamental transformation from an authoritarian to a democratic system is analyzed by researchers, experts, and NGO officials from various academic disciplines and from Asia at large (Japan, Korea, and Indonesia). Specific topics include: how Reformasi changed the structure of the Indonesian state and affected the daily lives of its citizens; the extent to which the Indonesian economy has developed beyond economic indicators; why and what problems continue to exist despite institutional changes and the relative freedom of Indonesians.Part I, "Governance and Social Dynamics," includes four chapters describing changes in institutions and social conditions since democratization in 1998. Part 2, "Paths to Equality," presents four chapters that examine the economic context of development policies to address poverty, inequality, and productivity, which are critical for Indonesia to escape the middle-income country trap. Part III, "Structural Challenges," consists of four chapters that discuss corruption, human rights practices, and security and military reform. Each paper acknowledges the institutional development achieved by the Indonesian government since 1998, then addresses challenges that may impede democracy taking root in Indonesian society. The Indonesian experience of democratization is especially noteworthy in a context in which Islamic societies historically have struggled with democracy and as many neighboring Southeast Asian countries are becoming less democratic. Discusses the achievements and challenges of Indonesia's transformation since the fall of Suharto's authoritarian regime in 1998. The fundamental transformation from an authoritarian to a democratic system is analysed by researchers, experts, and NGO officials from various academic disciplines and from Asia at large (Japan, Korea, and Indonesia). 466pp, paperback. The serious degradation of the vast peatlands of Indonesia since the 1990s is the proximate cause of the haze that endangers public health in Indonesian Sumatra and Borneo, and also in neighbouring Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Moreover peatlands that have been drained and cleared for plantations are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. This new book explains the degradation of peat soils and outlines a potential course of action to deal with the catastrophe looming over the region. Concerted action will be required to reduce peatland fires, and a successful policy needs to enhance social welfare and economic survival, support natural conservation and provide a return on investment if there is to be a sustainable society in the peatlands. This book argues that regeneration is possible through a new policy of people?s forestry that includes reforestation and rewetting peat soils. The data come from a major long-term research effort?the humanosphere project?that coordinates work done by researchers from the physical, natural and human or social sciences.
