Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A ten year study began in 1972 in West Greenland to investigate the breeding biology of the peregrine falcon. Data on nesting gyrfalcons were also collected. Thirty-four peregrine nesting sites were examined in the 6050 km2 inland study area near Sondre Stromfjord. Limited research also centered in Disko Bugt and Frederikshab. Peregrines were found nesting predominantly on high, south-facing cliffs, which overlooked large areas. The mean minimum distance between peregrine eyries was 7.7 km for the inland area (1972 and 1973) and 55 km for the coast (1974). Approximately 60 percent of the inland nesting sites were occupied each year. A ten-year average production of 1.90 young per occupied site and 2.78 young per successful site was determined. Lapland longspurs, snow buntings, wheatears, and redpolls comprised 90 percent of the peregrines diet. Raven nests and prey availability may be the most significant factor affecting falcon density. Addled peregrine eggs, eggshell fragments, and peregrine prey species were collected. Whole eggs averaged 14.3 ppm wet weight (305 ppm lipid weight ) DDE, while eggshell measurements showed a 16 percent thinning compared with pre-1940 eggs from Greenland.Prey species carried low levels of DDE. The peregrine population appears to be at a near critical contamination level, and a small increase in DDE level could contribute to a population decline. No indication of a decline has been observed during the study, and the population appears stable. The project banded 185 peregrines, from which 8 recoveries occurred. The recoveries suggest peregrines migrate south to winter in South America. A ten year study began in 1972 in West Greenland to investigate the breeding biology of the peregrine falcon. Thirty-four peregrine nesting sites were examined in the 6050 km2 inland study area near Sondre Stromfjord. Limited research also centered in Disko Bugt and Frederikshab. This title deals with the topic of biology of the peregrine falcon. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Menander was born in Athens in 342 BC and drowned in Piraeus in c. 290 BC. He wrote more than 100 comedies, but with regards to his character studies, he can be regarded as an heir to the tragedian Euripides. Only one of his comedies has been handed down as a complete play, namely Dyskolos (The Grouch), while others are almost complete. Menander was furthermore a model for the Roman comedians Plautus and Terence and thus for a later European comedy tradition. He associated with the intellectuals of his time, such as Aristotle's pupil Theophrastus, the philosopher Epicurus, and the politician and philosopher Demetrius of Phaleron. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This peer reviewed journal serves as a forum for diverse perspectives and approaches among historians of ideas and scholars of other disciplines who pursue research on topics in the history of ideas in the Nordic countries. At the same time, the journal wishes to provide a forum of exchange and dialogue between scholars from the Nordic countries and their non-Nordic colleagues and open up the English-speaking world to research from the Nordic community. This book is the result of collaborative efforts among nearly a dozen universities and colleges throughout the Nordic countries. The purpose of these initiatives is to further awareness of research, resources, and activities in the field of intellectual history in the Nordic countries as well as internationally. Ideas in History seeks a pluralism of methodological approaches to intellectual history: reflections on the field, historical contexts studied, subject matter for intellectual-historical investigation, critical understandings of relations between the intellectual past and present as well as the comprehension of culturally, politically and geographically diverse intellectual traditions. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The University of Copenhagen is 515 years old and psychology as an autonomous department in the University is 108 years old. There are two institutes -- Psychological Laboratory and the Institute of Clinical Psychology -- with 50 researchers and 1500 students. In the last decade of the twentieth century internationalisation is an increasing demand and in that perspective the University has decided to begin publishing a psychological yearbook. This first volume presents the University history and then presents three theses published in 1993. If you characterised Copenhagen-Psychology the word would be multiplicity. Many psychological schools and scientific traditions are represented; that means existence of traditional as well as current scientific educational and practice-inspired fields of problems as a focus for research. It is the intention of this volume to tell the reader about original and solid research built upon an innovative tradition, a legacy from experimental psychology and a phenomenological tradition through 100 years. It is due to this tradition that psychology has avoided the empiristic as well as the subjectivistic pitfall. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Vergil's pastoral poems -- Bucolica -- are not only some of the most prodigious from the Roman Antiquity to have survived, they are also the most elaborate. In this book Sven Lindahl interprets them in relation to the political situation of their context and points out a subtle 'architectural structure' in the collection. Shortly after young Vergil had written his pastorals, his friend Horace wrote his Epodes and in these poems, Lindahl sees a cunning dialogue with Vergil's work. In Laug, slaegt og stat (Guild, Family and State), Lino Vogt focuses on a series of special laws which were introduced by the local authorities at the end of the 13th century. The purpose of these laws - which were directly directed towards several of these families -- has been eagerly debated by historians. Were they expressions of a class struggle? Of a strengthening of governmental authority? Or were they just another weapon in the disputes between the fractions? This publication is simultaneously an introduction and a contribution to the debate. Focuses on a series of special laws which were introduced by the local authorities at the end of the 13th century. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Unlike the first two volumes of "ANGLES" on the English-Speaking World, this special issue does not originate in a set of conference papers. The idea of compiling a collection of essays on Romanticism emerged from the unusually strong concentration on Romantic studies among the graduate students of the English Department a couple of years ago. This volume places their work in the context of distinguished international scholars of greater seniority, scholars who have become academic contacts through conferences and assessment committees, and whose contributions I am very pleased to be able to include alongside the works of local contributors. The Romantic generations of the title of this volume thus strike a number of different chords: generations of scholars in Romantic studies; conventional divisions of Romantic poets into first, second and possibly third generations; the self-generative aspect of Romanticism; the awareness of poetic reputation and the image and afterlife of the poet. The collection spans just over a hundred years, from the 1780s to the 1890s, and while not in any way attempting to define Romanticism or raise issues of periodization the volume allows for the continued existence of Romantic features right until the end of the nineteenth century. Poetry looms large in this issue of ANGLES; apart from Ian Duncan's essay on Hume, Scott, and the "Rise of Fiction",' all the other essays are in some way concerned with the Romantic poet and his poetry. The Romantic poet is thus represented as a collector and editor of ballads, as a political radical and printmaker, as other to himself, essentially ignorant of the process of poetic composition, as a rival and collaborator with other poets, or as a poet long dead, the subject of successive generations of poetic lament. The boundaries between poetry and the visual arts is explored in a couple of the essays; indeed, the rivalry between portraiture and literature pervades no less than three of the contributions, and no matter whether the subject of inquiry is the image of the poet or the image of the poet's mother, the Romantic poet displays a high degree of self-consciousness with respect to both literary and visual media. Romantic generations generate both selves and others in poetry and portraiture. Romantic Generations presents a series of essays dealing with various aspects of literary and visual self-consciousness in British Romanticism. The creative process, artistic collaboration, the image of the poet during and after his lifetime, and the establishment of textual authority are all issues explored in this volume of essays by Danish, American and British scholars within the field of Romantic Studies. Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Hardback bound in glossy illustrated boards with illustrated end pages. No defects to note on the book. This book is intended as counter-evidence to the perception of Linguistics as the domain of dusty schoolroom grammar, where proponents of one theoretical orientation or the other spend their brief breaks in the playground bashing the others over the head with their favorite abstractions. The discipline may appear to outsiders as fragmented and, worse still, lacking in relevance to the real world outside its gates. The purpose is to show that Linguistics, in all its varied branches, can be entertaining as well as thought-provoking. 391 pages with a few black and white illustrated. Book.

Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. *** "Drawing on a mass of printed and archival sources, including Munch's extensive unpublished writings, Munch's Ibsen provides a comprehensive account of the relation between the two great Norwegian modernists. Situating the interlocking careers of Edvard Munch and Henrik Ibsen within Norway's cultural history, Joan Templeton establishes Ibsen's primordial importance for Munch as a pioneering modernist voice. She examines the over 400 illustrations Munch made of Ibsen's plays, one of the greatest homages a painter ever made to a writer, showing how Ibsen's imaginative universe was an essential and integral part of Munch's life and work as a whole. Templeton studies the illustrations as readings of Ibsen's plays and as examples of some of Munch's best work in various media: the witty, tender drawings of Peer Gynt; the eloquent oil sketches of Ghosts; the powerful woodcuts of The Pretenders; the sumptuous oil paintings of John Gabriel Borkman. She shows how some of the strongest of the illustrations result from Munch's accommodation of his own symbolic structures to Ibsen's text to create an osmosis of word and image. She also demonstrates how Munch sometimes refigured Ibsen's texts to fit his own experiences and convictions in a process of reification that is as interesting as his fidelity. She offers a detailed analysis of the iconographies of Munch's famous portraits of Ibsen and provides a historical and analytical account of the Ibsen illustrations through which Munch painted himself into theatrical history. Besides readers interested in the relation between the two artists, Munch's Ibsen will appeal to students of modern literature and art, art history, the history of the modern theatre, Scandinavian art and culture, and interdisciplinary approaches to the humanities." - Publisher. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Shifts, both visible and imperceptible, are a common denominator of the papers gathered in this issue of Ethnologia Europaea. The increasing diversification of religious manifestations in civil society is analysed by Peter Jan Margry, while Mats Lindqvist traces the impact of transnational business practices in the Baltic forest. Luis Silva questions the effect of the heritage regime on individuals working with and living in Portuguese dwellings turned patrimony. The adjustments to life that an individual body and mind must undergo following an organ transplantation are documented by a team led by Katrin Amelang. Each of these papers profits from emerging or recently established analytic interests and topoi in cultural research. The final paper in this issue turns to shifts and reactions within scholarship itself, as Anna Malewska-Szalygin uses her fieldwork in Poland to question some anthropological tenets current in work on post-socialist societies. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. What is Europe? Where is Europe? And what is Europe in the discipline of European ethnology? This issue of Ethnologic Europaea celebrates the journal's 40th birthday by looking at future paths for research on Europe. For a long time the disciplines grouped under the label of European ethnology were mainly national ethnologies. The need for European com-parisons lived more in the Sunday rhetoric of the discipline than in actual research, but with a new interest in transnational processes the perspectives have widened. The processes of economic unification also gave rise to research on facets of a Euro-pean culture, conditioned, for instance, by the administrative implementation of European economic and, increasingly, cultural policies. Local, regional and national cultural dimen-sions do not vanish in this development, of course, and neither do borders and boundaries, physical and mental.Processes of EU integration as well as globalisation may both weaken and strengthen national and regional borders, as we have seen during the last decades, but such developments call for a rethinking of Europe as a research field and also a questioning of ideas about Europe or European cultural homogeneity. The EU rhetoric about unity hides a more complex picture, where European integration and disintegration emerges in often surprising settings and forms. What is Europe? Where is Europe? And what is Europe in the discipline of European ethnology? This book describes various paths of research on Europe. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This volume starts out with two contrasting studies of monuments. How does the seemingly stability of stone and bronze hide a constantly changing cultural use? Anne Eriksen looks at the history of ruins in Norway. The murmur of ruins turns out to be a speech of modernity, a way of emotionalising place and history. Viktoriya Hryaban discusses the fate of socialist monuments in Ukraine and shows how the attempts to create alternative post-socialist memorials reproduce a traditional Soviet cultural grammar. Lace is a dominating decorative element in many Turkish Dutch homes. It has become a sign of "Turkishness" but as Hilje van der Horst points out, peoples relations to this mundane domestic element mirror some important conflicts and ideas about modernity and ethnicity. From the cultural media of monuments and lace, the discussion moves on to two more classic mass media and their role in identity politics. Stijn Reijnders explores a popular Dutch game show that has managed to survive for decades, becoming something of a national institution for some, an example of an outmoded genre for others. How does the involvement mirror ideas of an imagined national community? Finally, Silke Meyer looks at an 18th century national stereotype of The German quack in English popular debate and mass media. How did this caricature of Germanness become an alter ego of the English? Presents two contrasting studies of monuments. This book discusses the fate of socialist monuments in Ukraine and shows how the attempts to create alternative post-socialist memorials reproduce a traditional Soviet cultural grammar. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Skrift og historie hos Orderik Vitalis (Writing and History in Orderik Vitalis) elucidates the transition to written proceedings in the early Norman and Nordic cultures and places the process within the larger picture of the historical evolution. The point of departure is the Renaissance and particularly the historiography of the 12th century, which is seen as the best expression of the new thinking of that century. An analysis of parts of the Norman historian work, Historia Ecclesiastica, 1121-41, emphasises firstly the notion of history as partly detached from the history of salvation and secondly the dual meaning of the writing as both secular and the way to salvation, bound to the bible. Elucidates the transition to written proceedings in the early Norman and Nordic cultures and places the process within the historical evolution.
