Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No period in history has been so misnamed, as far as art is concerned, as the so-called Dark Ages in Europe. Masterpieces like the tomb of Theodric at Ravenna, the crown of King Recceswinth in Madrid and the Book of Kells in Dublin indicate the amazing richness of the age. This is a valuable study of that vital period in European art. First English-language edition. Fine broad, heavy 8vo hardback in Fine dust jacket. Many colour and b&w photos. 263pp.

Includes original dust jacket. , Pablo Picasso, one of the world?s most celebrated artists, had a long career characterized by dramatic transitions, reflecting his evolution as an artist. Small stain bottom edge and little spot on fold-out plate list at rear. A little soiling to top edge of p. 3. American artist Robert Rauschenberg's early works anticipated the pop art movement. He is best remembered for his "Combines" of the 1950s, in which non-traditional materials and objects were employed in innovative blends. One of his first and most famous combines was "Monogram" (p. 188), in which the unlikely mix of a stuffed angora goat, a tire, a police barrier, the heel of a shoe, and a tennis ball alter the course of modern art. The work in this book will stop viewers in their tracks, just as they did in mid-twentieth century.
