Many of the poems are intimately amorous or confessional, but there are also public statements in verse, & political & philosophical lyrics. Some poems are satirical or humorous; some are folksongs, ballads, or hymns. Ellmann here considered from the point of view of the 1970s such earlier poets as Emerson, Poe & Whitman, & also presented the modern poetry of Frost, Stevens, Williams, Pound & Eliot, selecting from the post-WW II era leading contemporaries whose reputations were then still being consolidated: Imamu Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones), Sylvia Plath, A.R. Ammons, Frank O'hara, Allen Ginsburg, Adrienne Rich, Robert Creeley, Denise Levertov, John Ashbery, Galway Kinnell. With these & their predessessors, Ellmann exhibited the principal directions of American poetry & the character of its achievement. Whether the reader reads from cover-to-cover or simply browses, this book provides access to the fertility of American invention & the subtlety of American thought. * ABOUT THE EDITOR, RICHARD ELLMANN: Born in Highland Park, Michigan, Richard Ellmann for many years held the Goldsmiths' Professorship of English Literature at Oxford University. He also taught at Harvard, Northwestern, Yale & Chicago. He received the National Book Award for his "James Joyce", which many regard as the finest literary biography ever written. Among his other books are "The Identity of Yeats", "Eminent Domain", "Golden Codgers", Ulysses on the Liffey" & "The Consciousness of Joyce". * SOME WORDS FROM RICHARD ELLMANN: "American poetry, once an offshoot, now appears to be a parent stem. Speculative, daring, sometimes melodious, it has become the register of the most independent minds. What they have written has urgency, sensitivity to contemporary conditions, force of utterance. That isolated figures should have achieved so much might be attributed to chance. Beyond chance, however, these qualities have been sustained & fostered by many good poets as well as by a few great ones. Such clustered enterprise makes persuasive the claim of this poetry to have a distinctive national character." - Richard Ellmann * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to all international destinations at our posted rates.

Drawing on Oxford's unrivaled bank of language & quotation on-line resources, this highly brows-able potpourri of allusive terms includes entries from a broad range of topics, including classical mythology, history, religion, folk customs, superstitions, science & technology, philosophy & popular culture. Unlike the major competing volume, this Dictionary contains more entries, w/ a wider range of reference & more LUCID explanations. Indeed, the 20,000 entries are rich w/ information, going beyond a simple identification to include colorful details, such as word origins & illustrative quotations. We learn, for instance, not only that "The Land of the Rising Sun" refers to Japan, but also that the phrase is a translation of Japanese Nippon (nichi "the sun" and pon "the source"). We also learn that "Leatherneck" refers to the leather lining inside the collar of a marine's uniform. There are special boxes for topics such as "Days of the Week" and "Last Words" (from Goethe's "More light" to Robert E. Lee's "Strike the tent"). The volume also features thousands of brief biographies, both real & fictional, from Old Mother Hubbard to Gypsy Rose Lee, & a thematic index for easy use, & there are numerous cross-references throughout the book. From "Barbie Doll" to "the Big Bang Theory," "Every Dog has His Day," and "Seven-League Boots," "The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable" is a KALEIDOSCOPIC reference work on the thousands of colorful words & phrases we use every day. * ABOUT THE EDITOR: Elizabeth Knowles is editor of "The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations" & "The Oxford Dictionary of New Words" among other works. * SHIPPING: We custom wrap & label & securely package this superb book for FREE shipment within the United States via USPS Media MaiL (or via USPS Priority Mail for a nominal $10.00 charge) and at our posted rates to international destinations via USPS First Class Airmail (recommended) or USPS Priority Airmail.

Roberts' deftly written & evocatively illustrated "History of the World," an outstanding one-vol. survey of the major events, developments & personalities of the known past. In a truly remarkable work of compression & synthesis, Roberts explores thousands of years of history, weaving the stories of empires, arts, religion, economics & science into his lucid narrative. Beginning w/ the early hominids, he swiftly & authoritatively brings the story up through the emergence of Mesopotamian civilizations & ancient Egypt. Here, too, is comprehensive coverage of the Indian & Chinese civilizations ("For 2500 years," he points out, "there has been a Chinese nation using a Chinese language"), as well as developments in Africa & South America. Aided by photographs of key archaeological finds (such as monumental Egyptian statues, Peruvian medallions & Celtic jewelry), Roberts clearly explains early arts, engineering & religion & also carefully ties in changing economics, such as trade routes & developments in agriculture & manufacturing, making clear their importance for the history of politics & changing societies. The story leaps ahead through the Roman Empire, the explosive arrival of Islam, the rise & fall of samurai rule in Japan, the medieval kingdoms of sub-Saharan Africa, the Mongol conquests, & the early modern European expansion across the globe. American independence, the French Revolution, colonial empires, Japan's startling modernization & the World Wars follow in turn, accompanied by discussions of scientific & technical breakthroughs. W/ informative maps, photographs & reproductions of important artwork (some in full color), Roberts clearly explains the impact of the key individuals & the major influences on history the world over, down to the era of an integrated global economy & the fall of the U.S.S.R. Vividly written & beautifully illustrated, "History of the World" offers the finest, most readable one-volume survey available today. Yet over the years, most of these popular tales have undergone many transformations, as editors & storytellers have shortened & sentimentalized them, as well as slanted them to suit the demands of the time. Now reissued, Iona & Peter Opie's magnificent "The Classic Fairy Tales", presents 24 of the best-known fairy tales in their original written form. Drawing on years of expertise, the editors provide introductions to ea. fairy tale, tracing the development of ea. story & noting points of interest. We learn, for example, that in a 17th century version of "Sleeping Beauty", the prince actually raped the princess in her sleep. "Goldilocks", it turns out, evolved from the little old woman of the original story into a young girl. "Little Red Ridinghood" was actually eaten by the wolf, & in an early version of the "Frog Prince," the princess had to sleep w/ the frog to free him from his spell. W/ classic tales from the likes of Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, & Hans Christian Andersen, & the works of such famous illustrators as Gustav Dore, Kate Greenaway, & George Cruikshank, "The Classic Fairy Tales" brings to life the charm & beauty of these timeless favorites. * ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Iona Opie & her late husband Peter wrote & edited many books together, including "The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes", "The Oxford Nursery Rhyme Book", "The Oxford Book of Children's Verse", "The Lore & Language of Schoolchildren", "The Singing Game", & "Children's Games in Street and Playground". * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this splendid book w/ our greatest elegance & care for FREE shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL within the U.S. w/ shipment via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below cost fee & shipment to international destinations via USPS FIRST CLASS AIRMAIL at our posted below-cost rates.

This book tells the story of how Americans endured & eventually prevailed in the face of those unprecedented calamities. The Depression was both disaster & opportunity. As David Kennedy vividly demonstrates, the economic crisis of the 1930s was far more than a simple reaction to the alleged excesses of the 1920s. For more than 100 years before 1929 America's unbridled industrial revolution had gyrated through repeated boom & bust cycles, wastefully consuming capital & inflicting untold misery on city & countryside alike. "Freedom From Fear" explores how the nation agonized over its role in World War II, how it fought the war, why the United States won, & why the consequences of victory were both sweet & ironic. In a compelling narrative, Kennedy analyzes the determinants of American strategy, the painful choices faced by commanders & statesmen, & the agonies inflicted on the millions of ordinary Americans who were compelled to swallow their fears & face battle as best they could. "Freedom from Fear" is a COMPREHENSIVE & VIVID account of the most convulsive period in American history, excepting only the Civil War--a period that formed the crucible in which modern America was created. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "David Kennedy is one of America's most distinguished historians, & "Freedom from Fear" is a remarkable achievement deeply researched, insightful, & beautifully written." -James T. Patterson, Bancroft Prize-winning author of "Grand Expectations". "David Kennedy's panoramic history of America & the world between 1929 & 1945 is a SUPERB reconstruction of the era that formed our times. Simply put, it is a BRILLIANT narrative & analysis. Anyone who wants to understand our century needs to read Kennedy's book." -Robert Dallek, author of "Flawed Giant: Lyndon Johnson & His Times, 1961-1973". "A MASTERFUL work of history: Kennedy's sprightly & LUCID prose adds force to his careful judgments, some of them controversial." -John Morton Blum "COMPETENT, COMPLETE & LITERATE, "A MAJOR & thoroughly fine piece of work" -John Kenneth Galbraith * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: DAVID M. Some 250 halftone illustrations of gardens feature contemporary paintings & engravings, recent & early photographs, garden plans & sketches. In addition, 24 pages of color plates illustrate the rich variety & scope of the garden. The "Companion" is neither a practical manual on how to select & grow plants nor a garden visitor's handbook. Rather, the 1500 entries include over 700 on individual gardens selected for their historical significance & originality of design. In addition, the "Companion" brings together for the first time in a single convenient reference work information on modern garden designers, such as Church, Baragan, Burle Marx, Frederick Law Olmsted, & Jens Jenson, & on principal patrons, illustrators, & nurserymen & plant collectors--information heretofore available if at all only in specialist periodicals & in a few rare books. There are also entries on features such as fountains, mazes, serpentine walls, & moon doors; & on garden terms like jie jing, étang, & casino. Gardens for special purposes are included--for disabled people, hospitals, & prisons, roof gardens, rock gardens, & water gardens. Longer articles cover garden design in major countries, & specialist topics such as botanical illustration, Islam, public parks, & landscape architecture as an academic subject. As in other "Oxford Companions" the entries are arranged alphabetically w/ comprehensive cross-referencing. * ABOUT THE AUTHORS: SIR GEOFFREY JELLICOE, CBE, architect & landscape architect, is the author of many distinguished books, including the classic "Italian Gardens of the Renaissance" (1925, w/ J.C. SPLENDID: MONUMENTAL: COMPELLING: HISTORY IN THE GRAND MANNER: POWERFUL: DRAMATIC: FASCINATING: VIVID: ASTUTE: MEMORABLE: NEW: BOOK CLUB EDITION (Off-printed from the First printing of the OUP First Edition) hardcover: NEW handsomely-designed color-illustrated jacket w/ sharp NEW edges & corners, NEW chocolate paper-over-boards cover w sharp NEW edges & corners, IMMACULATE smooth-cut text-block exterior, IMPECCABLE cream-white card-stock end-papers, NEW perfect binding w/ tightly-gathered sheets & chocolate cloth banding at spine-caps, PRISTINE interior handsomely printed on EXCELLENT unblemished archival paper * 6.30" x 9.50" x 1.76, 0.96 kg, xviii+606 (624) pp * ABOUT THE BOOK: It is one of the great questions of American history--Why did the southern states bolt from the Union and help precipitate the Civil War? In final volume of his MONUMENTAL work--"The Road to Disunion"--acclaimed historian William W. Freehling offers a COMPELLING new answer. Here is history in the grand manner, a POWERFUL narrative peopled with dozens of MEMORABLE portraits, telling this important story with skill and relish. Freehling highlights all the key moments on the road to war, including the violence in Bleeding Kansas, Preston Brooks's beating of Charles Sumner in the Senate chambers, the Dred Scott Decision, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, & much more. As Freehling shows, the election of Abraham Lincoln sparked a political crisis, but at first most Southerners took a cautious approach, willing to wait & see what Lincoln would do--especially, whether he would take any antagonistic measures against the South. But at this moment, the extreme fringe in the South took charge, first in South Carolina & Mississippi, but then throughout the lower South, sounding the drum roll for secession. Indeed, "The Road to Disunion" is the first book to fully document how this decided minority of Southern hotspurs took hold of the secessionist issue &, aided by a series of fortuitous events, drove the South out of the Union. Freehling provides compelling profiles of the leaders of this movement--many of them members of the South Carolina elite. Throughout the narrative, he evokes a world of FASCINATING characters & places as he captures the drama of one of America's most important--& least understood--stories. The long-awaited sequel to the award-winning "Secessionists at Bay", which was hailed as "the most important history of the Old South ever published," this volume concludes a major contribution to our understanding of the Civil War. A COMPELLING, VIVID portrait of the final years of the antebellum South, "The Road to Disunion" will stand as an important history of its subject. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "This sure-to-be-lasting work--studded with pen portraits and consistently ASTUTE in its appraisal of the subtle cultural and geographic variations in the region--adds crucial layers to scholarship on the origins of America's bloodiest conflict." -The Atlantic Monthly "SPLENDID, painstaking account . & so a work of history reaches into the past to illuminate the present. It is light we need, & we owe Freehling a debt for shedding it." -Washington Post " A masterful, dramatic, breathtakingly detailed narrative." -The Baltimore Sun * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: WILLIAM W. FREEHLING is one of the most distinguished American historians of the Civil War era. He is Singletary Professor of the Humanities Emeritus at the University of Kentucky & Senior Fellow at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. He is the author of "Prelude to Civil War", which won a Bancroft Prize, "The Road to Disunion, Volume I: Secessionists at Bay & Volume II: Secessionists Triumphant", & "The South vs. the South: How Anti-Confederate Southerners Shaped the Course of the Civil War." * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee.

But John Calvin the man has been largely ignored by historians; most of us, if we think of him at all, tend to view him as little more than the joyless tyrant of Geneva & the source of an abstract theology as forbidding as its author. This book, by an eminent historian whose career has been devoted to understanding the larger patterns of early modern European history, aims to make Calvin come alive by putting him back in his own time & understanding how he dealt with its problems. A Frenchman, an exile, & a humanist in the tradition of Erasmus, Calvin was unusually sensitive to the complexities & contradictions of later Renaissance culture. The Calvin who emerges from this eloquent study is a surprisingly human, more plausible, more ecumenical & often sympathetic figure, whose achievement was both more & less than (& at the same time quite different from) the way it has commonly been portrayed. The result is a brilliant interpretation not only of Calvin but also of the Reformation & its relationship to the movements of the Renaissance. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "This book merits a doxology. At last someone has rescued the great reformer of Geneva from the stony grayness to which he has been so wrongly consigned & has drawn an animated picture of a passionate & complex man. Bouwsma knows there is no better way to grasp the spirit of an age than to see it in the life of someone who was deeply immersed in its fiercest currents. This book is not just about Calvin or about his age, but about the intermeshing of the two. It now stands as the best biography of Calvin available." -Harvey Cox, Harvard Divinity School -- "This is a great book. It is difficult for an author to write innovatively, freshly, & creatively about a subject whose life & thought have been so thoroughly studied. Yet Bouwsma has done so. In Calvin's own writings he has discovered themes & continuities & contradictions & tensions which have never been exposed before. Future students of Calvin will be hard pressed either to ignore or refute Bouwsma's theses." -M. Howard Rienstra (deceased) Former Director, H.H. Meeter Center for Calvin Studies, Calvin College & Seminary * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: WILLIAM J. BOUWSMA is Sather Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. One of the foremost American scholars of the Renaissance & Reformation, he is also the author of "Venice & the Defense of Republican Liberty: Renaissance Values in the Age of the Counter-Reformation", acclaimed by 'Renaissance Quarterly' as "among the handful of the most significant studies of the history of ideas produced in the 1960s." * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE custom wraps, labels & packages this fine book w/ our greatest care for secure prompt FREE shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL within the United States (or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a nominal additional $12.00 fee) & via USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL to all international destinations at our posted below-cost rates.

Little did his parents know that this child, born in the auspicious week of the Feast of San Donnino, would grow up to be not only a national hero of Italy, but also one of the most successful composers of all time. Many books have been written about Verdi's music, yet few have sufficiently covered Verdi the man. In "Verdi: A Biography" Mary Jane Phillips-Matz brings us the result of more than 30 years' research on the life of this colossus of Italy. Drawing on numerous original documents provided by Verdi's descendants, the Carrara-Verdi family, this long awaited biography reexamines Verdi's life not only as a composer, but as a philanthropist & son of Italy. Matz places Verdi against a backdrop of a century of fierce Italian nationalism that dictated that not only musical, but political considerations permeate his life & work. As Phillips-Matz writes, in Verdi's music, in the patriotic phrases of his librettos, "nationalism found a voice that aroused Italians to the cause of the Patria." In fact, Verdi's stature as a cultural icon rose to such heights that in 1861, he was pressured to serve on the First Parliament of Italy. As his close friend Carlos Cavour wrote, Verdi's membership would lend great dignity to the Parliament both in & beyond Italy & thus further the efforts of the national party in its fight for independence. Here too is a glimpse into the personal life of Verdi, his turbulent relationships w/ his friends & family, his dedication to his music, his passion for his country. In defense of his second wife, former soprano Giuseppina Strepponi (shunned by his family for her tarnished reputation) Verdi obtained a legal separation from his parents & for a time withdrew from public life to ensure their privacy. In protest over the Teatro La Fenice's poor choice of a soprano for La Traviata (1853), Verdi threatened to defect from the project ("I have no faith whatsoever that it will succeed, &, on the contrary, it will be a complete fiasco"). And in the midst of the Austro-Prussian war of 1866, in which the very freedom of Italy was at stake, Verdi, objecting to France's support of Austria, asked to be released from his contract to finish Don Carlos for the Paris Opera (the opera house, however, did not think war a good enough excuse). Upon his death in 1901 there were scenes of national mourning for the man whose actions had become a model, & music an inspiration to all of Italy. With an eloquent foreword by Andrew Porter, "Verdi: A Biography" brilliantly illuminates the life of the composer, patriot, & philanthropist who not only created the operas that would prosper generations after the artist, but who also emboldened the cultural pride of a country fighting for its freedom. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "Mary Jane Phillips-Matz's "Verdi" is the latest, longest, & most throughly informed of the many Verdi biographies in English . . . she has brought us closer than ever before to the complicated, important man whose operas have been the delight & admiration of the world." -From the Foreword by Andrew Porter * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee. Readers will learn that the grand army of Alexander the Great consisted of 48,500 soldiers & was the largest ever to leave Greek soil, that the white facades of refined Ionic & Doric structures in Greece were once washed in vibrant reds & blues, & that the Theodosian Code, a collection of Roman law published in AD 438, still survives today. Here are examinations of the lives & works of great philosophers & literary figures, such as Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Sophocles, Seneca, Aeschylus & the poets Ovid & Sappho. Mythology & religion were integral parts of classical civilization, & from Aphrodite & Hermes to funerary rites & sacrifice, they are integral parts of this volume as well. Whether searching for the birth date of Julius Caesar or the location of Cyprus, the ancient Roman method of navigation or the ancient Greek method of glass production, readers will find that this extraordinarily thorough yet accessibly written book is a treasury of information on classical civilization. BRILLIANT: COMPREHENSIVE: BALANCED: NEW First Edition hardcover (Orig. 2017) First Printing * 6.18" x 9.50" x 2.06", 0.96 kg, xviii+608+xiv (640) pp * ABOUT THE BOOK: No other German has shaped the history of early-modern Europe more than Martin Luther. In this comprehensive & balanced biography we see Luther as a rebel, but not as a lone hero; as a soldier in a mighty struggle for the universal reform of Christianity & its role in the world. The foundation of Protestantism changed the religious landscape of Europe, & subsequently the world, but the author chooses to show Luther not simply as a reformer, but as an individual. In his study of the Wittenberg monk, Heinz Schilling--one of Germany's leading social and political historians--gives the reader a rounded view of a difficult, contradictory character, who changed the world by virtue of his immense will. * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Heinz Schilling was Professor of Early Modern History at the Humboldt University, Berlin until his retirement in 2010. His main areas of research are in early modern European history, including studies in religion, politics, migration studies, foreign policy, & social and cultural history. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "Heinz Schilling's great biography of the reformer sets new standards." -Hans Maier, Die Welt. "The best non-theological biography of Luther for decades." -Thomas Kaufmann, Suddeutsche Zeitung. "The gold standard amongst Luther biographies." -Matthias Matussek, Focus. "Marvelously readable & based on extensive research, the most balanced account of Luther's life to date." -Joachim Whalley, Times Literary Supplement. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & to international destinations via efficient USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL at our posted rates.
