Roberts is an undisputed master of his craft. His acclaimed "History of the World" (OUP) has been one of the most astounding phenomena in modern-history publishing. W/ it, Roberts has made hundreds of thousands of readers around the globe deeply aware of the pleasures of history & has demonstrated that a historian can create a view of the world that is genuinely international in its scope & interests. In "Twentieth Century" Professor Roberts has given us an authoritative & engrossing survey of the tumultuous century just past. "Twentieth Century" allows us to understand the extraordinarily dynamic & extraordinarily disturbing century through which we have all lived. Brilliant both for its grand political sweep & its unprecedented grasp of massive social change, Roberts' work goes beyond simple narrative in distinguishing the major long-term changes that run beneath the flux of events to establish a true world history & not merely a story of the relations of powers & governments. As Roberts shows, the fundamental changes of the 20th century fall outside the framework that conventional international relations & its history employs. These changes include a worldwide increase in life expectancy, revolutionary strides in science & technology, & the radical configuration of the global economy. In order to give emphasis to his wide-ranging themes, Roberts opens w/ a grand survey of the century's beginnings to show the ways in which the world of 1901 did NOT foreshadow our own, & how all of our most basic assumptions from this earlier time have vanished. Chronicling the historically significant events of the last hundred years in a sweeping & always lively continuous narrative, Roberts then closes his work w/ a penetrating retrospect which assesses the position of humanity as it confronts the dawn of a new age. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: J.M. Roberts, former Warden of Merton College, Oxford, is the author of numerous works of history, including "History of the World" & "A History of Europe.".

NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 617pp. Trade Paperback. Walter Laquer's "Europe in Our Time- A History: 1945-1992" is a supremely authoritative text, detailing a period in European history (and world history) quite unlike any other. Europe was, to be blatantly honest, a mess after the Allies defeated the Germans and received their unconditional surrender. The problem was what to do after the end of the European War. From here, Laquer speaks of all the important developments that occured in Europe, in most countries, in a very interesting prose-like fashion. Key concepts and terms our all explained sufficiently, and this book is similar to a novel in that it will keep you up at night, turning page after page, swallowing the history of Europe after 1945. Highly recommended. First Ed Thus; First Printing indicated.

Central to America's idea of itself is the character of Benjamin Franklin. We all know him, or think we do: in recent works & in our inherited conventional wisdom, he remains fixed in place as a genial polymath & self-improver who was so very American that he is universally known as "the first American." The problem w/ this beloved notion of Franklin's quintessential American-ness, as Gordon Wood shows us in this marvelous revelatory book, is that it is SIMPLY NOT TRUE & is so embedded in our mind's eye that it blinds us to the no less admirable or important, but far more interesting, man that Franklin really was & leaves us powerless to make sense of some of the most crucial events of his life: his preoccupations w/ becoming a gentlemen, his longtime loyalty to the Crown & his burning ambition to be a player in the British Empire's power structure, the personal character of his conversion to revolutionary, his reasons for writing the "Autobiography", his controversies w/ John & Samuel Adams & w/ Congress, his love of Europe & conflicted sense of national identity & the fact that his death was greeted by mass mourning in France but was widely ignored in America. Gordon Wood argues that Benjamin Franklin DID become the Revolution's necessary man, second only to George Washington. But then why was his importance so denigrated in his own lifetime & why has his image been so distorted since? "The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin" is a LANDMARK work, a MAGNIFICENT FRESH VISION of Franklin's life & reputation, filled w/ PROFOUND insights into the Revolution & into the emergence of America's idea of itself. * HIGH PRAISE: "In this ABSORBING narrative, one of our premier American historians has captured the extraordinary interaction of a rising American people & the man who rose w/ them, shaping their aspirations as they shaped his." -Edmund Morgan, author of "Benjamin Franklin" * SHIPPING: We custom wrap & label & securely package this superb book for shipment via USPS Media Mail at no charge (or via USPS Priority Mail for a nominal $10.00 charge) within the United States or at our posted rates to international destinations via USPS First Class Airmail (recommended) or USPS Priority Airmail.

In 1994, it was on USA Today's bestseller list for three weeks, peaking at 105. Perhaps the puritanical hangover that plagues the righteous majority impeded its ascendancy, or maybe too many browsers, thumbing a fast flip two or three times noticed very little white, too many pages square with solid blocks of type, some all italics, some sentences so long nary a period for a page or two, and no chapters either, no place to stop and go pee, decided they'd rather not and tucked the book back on the shelf. Indeed, it took me about forty pages to get comfortable with the writing style. THEY WHISPER is the first person narrative of Ira Holloway, an erogenous and sensitive man who loves women, who finds rapturous beauty in the crinkle of an instep as easily as in "her henna nipples" (pg. 300) or the "soft sargasso struck with this same sunlight there between her legs" (pg 308). Ira is so sensitive and responsive that he hears the ethereal whispers of a woman's thoughts. Mr. Butler does not push this phenomenon on the reader, he just lets it happen, and we accept it as a necessary device for Ira to adopt an omnipresent point of view in order to tell his story. The whispering, along with the long runs of indirect and interior dialogue, interior monologue and stream of consciousness without chapters, at times feels like automatic writing but it eventually captivates. Around page 149 the story was dragging, but recovered enough until page 192 when I wanted to quit, and then on page 193 I sensed the shadow of tragedy and kept on going. I'm glad I did. Ira and his whispering women touch first on a nebulous relationship between sexuality and death, sexuality and fear, and then delve into sexuality and jealousy and particularly sexuality and religion. For his incredible sentience, Ira seems a larger than life character. He loves women and respects them; he perceives them precisely and is therefore able to respond in word or deed without risk of presumption or failure. If we were all like Ira and his whispering women, we truly would be making love instead of war. First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated.

Damien Echols was just eighteen years old when he was condemned to death for a crime he didn't commit. His case--that of the infamous "West Memphis Three" -- gained notoriety after a documentary, "Paradise Lost", exposed the biased nature of the trial and Echols as the charming--and tragic--figure at its center. New York City Architect Lorri Davis saw the documentary and was forever changed. She sent a letter to Damien, from which sprung a 16 year correspondence.
