Add to basketSoft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Art, Photos, Maps Etc (illustrator). 1st. The urge to settle new lands was evident long before the great surge of European colonisation was initiated about the 15th Century by the Spainish and Portugese. There are 25 example of failed settlements included in ''Ghost Colonies" but the earliest under study were those of the Vikings in Greenland in the period 985 to c1500 and in eastern North America. Spanish colonisation of the Americas followed a short time later. The English joined in the early 1600s and from that point the pace and extent of colonisation world-wide increased rapidly. The Dutch became established in South Africa, Central America and the Indian Ocean, in what is now Indodesia. Much of the content relates to failure of colonies established by major empires, for reasons of power, wealth, influence and territory. However, some of most enlightening chapters cover smaller colony projects, organised by independent groups seeking escape, isolation or some form of Utopia for religious, political, moral or philosophical grounds. Some of these were formed from 1800 to the early 1900s. French, English, Dutch and Scottish settlers headed for destinations in Madagascar, Panama, Texas and Mauritius. The 1838 Port Essington settlement in Northern Australia foundered on the parsimony and inaction of bureaucrats in London while others were created following the American Civil War by disillusioned Confederates in Mexico in 1865, in 1886 a "racially pure" German group set up its Utopia in Paraguay and about that time Cossacks tried and failed at a Red Sea location, while 1901 saw a collective of Finnish Socialists select British Columbia for their new home. All these, and others, failed for a variety of reasons --- lack of material and capital support, unfriendly natives, privation, disease, even starvation and through internal conflicts. The final chapter centres on the Jonestown Peoples' Temple in Guyana where almost 1000 residents died in a mass suicide in 1978. A note on the back cover states:that the "Ghost Colonies" stories are a ".compelling. eye-opening mix of adventure, mystery, tragedy, exploration and discovery that reveals a fascinating and largely forgotten area of history." First editiion from Pier 9, NSW, of 2009, 220 pages including bibliography and index, illustrated throughout with art (much in colour), b/w art, photos, mainly b/w ,numerous maps, some in colour. Colour art card covers with flaps to both covers are VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Unpacked weight close to 800grams.

We now know that this delicate ecosystem is our life-support system; it regulates the earth's temperatures and climate and comprises 99 percent of living space on earth. So when we change the chemistry of the whole ocean system, as we are now, life as we know it is threatened. In Seasick, veteran science journalist Alanna Mitchell dives beneath the surface of the world's oceans to give readers a sense of how this watery realm can be managed and preserved, and with it life on earth. Each chapter features a different group of researchers who introduce readers to the importance of ocean currents, the building of coral structures, or the effects of acidification. With Mitchell at the helm, readers submerge 3,000 feet to gather sea sponges that may contribute to cancer care, see firsthand the lava lamp-like dead zone covering 17,000 square kilometers in the Gulf of Mexico, and witness the simultaneous spawning of corals under a full moon in Panama. The first book to look at the planetary environmental crisis through the lens of the global ocean, Seasick takes the reader on an emotional journey through a hidden realm of the planet and urges conservation and reverence for the fount from which all life on earth sprang." "Based on the discovery of a family archive of approximately 100 letters, 50 hours of interviews, war diaries, official brigade diaries and other histories of the period, Journey to Tobruk traces the life journey of genuine war hero and 'Rat of Tobruk' John Murray. Author Louise Austin - Murray's niece - makes extensive use throughout the story of Murray's letters to his mother, with whom he was very close and kept a loyal and lifelong correspondence. Murray is an eloquent letter writer, and his laconic, laidback tone in times of hardship is definitively Australian. These personal messages add a wonderful dimension of immediacy and humanity to the story." (publisher).

The first title to be launched in the series, "An Incomplete History of World War I" takes the reader on an eccentric and exciting journey. Instead of providing a complicated and dense overview, it focuses on poignant events - extraordinary, heroic and obscure - ranging from little-known episodes in major Western Front battles to the valiant exploits of outlandish individuals on the remote frontiers of the conflict. It will help the reader not only understand the war's causes and effects but also to appreciate the profound and lasting ways in which it affected individual lives. This enthralling collection of twenty-four stoies will amaze, entertain, shock and uplift. Eccentric haracters, feats of heroim and bizarre twists of fate-often overlooked by conventional histories, yet the very stuff of legends - come to life in a series of gripping narratives, written with the authority of a historian and the verve of a great storyteller. Whether you are a seasoned history buff or know little about World War 1, this is a richly satisfying account of a conflict that reshaped the world. The two bullets that mobilised 60 million soldiers, the gentleman's air war, the Anzacs who led the last great cavalry charge in history, the spontaneous Christmas truce of 1914 and the drinking binge that stopped Germany's last bid for victory . . . Ref PPP 4.

"Combining the heroic, the tragic, the bizarre and the humorous, Australia's Pioneers, Heroes & Fools takes you along the intriguing highways and byways of Australian exploration, focusing on the tricks and tools of the explorer's trade and the trials and tribulations experienced on the journeys. Along with the famous explorers whose names are a part of Australian folklore, the intriguing stories of many of the other explorers who traversed the country are captured in this narrative. Indigenous Australians, female explorers, non-British pioneers and convicts all conducted significant explorations in this country, although their stories are not commonly featured in our history education. Impeccably researched and featuring many extracts from explorers' diaries and letters, Australia's Pioneers, Heroes & Fools is packed with ripping yarns and fascinating details, revealing the identities, experiences, motivations and in particular the modus operandi of Australia's colonial explorers" (back cover).
