Im östlichen Germanien, wo einst Wandalen wohnten, kamen mit der Völkerwanderung und den Anstürmen aus Asien späterhin verschiedene Volksgruppen, die dann zusammengefasst Wenden genannt wurden. Der polnische Chronist Vinzenz Kadlubek ging noch einen Schritt weiter und erfand die Wanda (Sage), um dem neu geschaffenen Herzogtum der Polanen eine weit zurückreichende Geschichte zu beschaffen.
