"Erste Ausgabe. ? Der reformierte Prediger Ewald (1748-1822) belebte "geistreich und heiter in Gesellschaft" den Kreis um Lilli Schönemann. Goethe dichtete zur Vermählung seines Jugendfreundes das sog. Bundeslied "In allen guten Stunden". Die Freundschaft zerbrach in den neunziger Jahren, als Ewald mit seinen politischen Schriften den Unwillen des Adels erregte. Die Einschränkung auf dem Titel, dass Ewald nur der Herausgeber sei, ist fingiert. Die politischen Umstände zwangen ihn, Detmold 1796 zu verlassen. Hier beschreibt er Paderborn, Kassel, Marburg, Friedberg, Homburg v.d.H. und Wilhelmsbad. Ferner mit Kapiteln über "interessante Menschen", die er besuchte, wie den Züricher Landarzt Johann Konrad Hotze und dessen Schwiegersohn, den Arzt Matthias Wilhelm de Neufville in Frankfurt, die Schriftstellerin Sophie von La Roche, den Prediger Friedrich Wilhelm Hufnagel und den Anatomen Samuel Thomas Soemmerring; ferner Ausführungen über politischen Fanatismus und die Kantische Philosophie. ?
