It aims to give constructions of the algebras and their finite-dimensional modules in terms that are rational with respect to the given ground field. All isotropic algebras with non-reduced relative root systems are treated, along with classical anisotropic algebras. The latter are treated by what seems to be a novel device, namely by studying certain modules for isotropic classical algebras in which they are embedded. In this development, symmetric powers of central simple associative algebras, along with generalized even Clifford algebras of involutorial algebras, play central roles. Considerable attention is given to exceptional algebras. The pace is that of a rather expansive research monograph. The reader who has at hand a standard introductory text on Lie algebras, such as Jacobson or Humphreys, should be in a position to understand the results. More technical matters arise in some of the detailed arguments. The book is intended for researchers and students of algebraic Lie theory, as well as for other researchers who are seeking explicit realizations of algebras or modules. It will probably be more useful as a resource to be dipped into, than as a text to be worked straight through. 204 pp. Englisch.

The classical theory of modular forms is assumed known to the reader, but the p-adic theory is reviewed in detail, with ample intuitive and heuristic discussion, so that the book will serve as a convenient point of entry to research in that area. The results on the U operator and on Galois representations are new, and will be of interest even to the experts. A list of further problems in the field is included to guide the beginner in his research. The book will thus be of interest to number theorists who wish to learn about p-adic modular forms, leading them rapidly to interesting research, and also to the specialists in the subject. 132 pp. Englisch.

The preceding 12 colloquia were held in France, Italy and Germany. CAAP '85 and CAAP '87 were integrated into the International Joint Conference on Theory and Practice of Software Development, TAPSOFT (see Lecture Notes in Computer Science volumes 185 and 249). As another effort to link theory and practice in computer science, CAAP '88 was held in conjunction with the European Symposium on Programming, ESOP '88 (see volume 300 of this Lecture Notes series). CAAP '88 is a conference in the area of program development and programming concepts but, following the tradition, is devoted to theoretical aspects, and especially to Trees, a basic structure of computer science. A wider range of topics in theoretical computer science is also covered. The papers are on word, tree or graph languages, with algorithmic or complexity studies, on abstract data types (another classical topic of CAAP) and/or term rewriting systems and on non-standard logics, and parallelism and concurrency. 316 pp. Englisch.

A unified approach characterizing the dynamics of a system through the formulation of the characteristic -matrix of the system is presented. The latent structures, solvents, divisors, and spectral factors of the non-singular characteristic -matrix and their relationships with the respesctive counterparts of the state-space representations are explored. Applications in model reduction, pole assignment design, modal control design for multivariable systems, parallel realizations and cascade realizations of multiport networks are illustrated. Computational algorithms and illustrative numerical examples are presented throughout the monograph. The reader is assumed to have a graduate level background in modern control theory. 220 pp. Englisch.

The theme of the ESOP conferences is the design, specification and implementation of programming languages and systems. Particular emphasis is placed on work in which an implemented system embodies an important concept or formal model of programming in such a way that its usefulness is demonstrated. Among the five sections of the volume, the one on language implementation contains the most papers. Here a rather wide spectrum of aspects, ranging from language implementation problems on parallel architectures and optimization of functional programs to new concepts for programming environments is covered. Another large section consists of papers in the area of algebraic specification and type concepts. The papers in this section are devoted to issues such as polymorphism, subtypes and notions of implementation and reuse for algebraic specifications. Two further sections are devoted to new language concepts and novel approaches to program development and verification. 392 pp. Englisch.

While the research literature is rich in linear Gaussian methodologies, new contributions to the most relevant area of nonlinear and non-Gaussian processes have been scarce. Among the significant areas of application for which such methodologies are needed are: economics, biology, immunology, underwater acoustics, electric power generation, chemical process control, and variable structure systems in general. The latter include adaptive, intelligent, and decomposing mathematical structures or processes. The volume includes ten research papers on theory, computational methods, and applications. Topics include filtering with application to inertial navigation, structural-change detection, bilinear time-series models, bispectral estimation, threshold models, catastrophic models and a generalized eigenstructure method. 160 pp. Englisch.

The term makes no distinction between air, oxygen or any other gas used as a medium of compression. Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) refers to the use of pure oxygen for breathing in a hyperbaric chamber via a mask or similar device or breathing freely in a monoplace chamber pressurized with oxygen. HBO is an intermittent, high dose oxygen inhalation therapy. We have confined ourselves to the subject of HBO therapy and have not included oxygen therapy at normobaric pressures. With the exception of decompression sick ness we have made no attempt to cover diving medicine as many excellent treatises are available on this SUbject. Literature on HBO is extensive, and we estimate that the total number of publication on the subject of hyperbaric medicine dur ing the past 150 years exceeds 20000, nearly half published during the past 30 years. No comprehensive textbook on this topic has ever been written in English, nor is there any bibliography more up to date than 1965. The books on the subject have consisted of monographs, reports of symposia and proceedings of the various international congresses on hyperbaric medicine. No definitive work has been published in the past 10 years. 372 pp. Englisch.

In general, organic matter has isotope ratios characteristic of its origin (e. g. plants with different modes of photosynthesis and different growth conditions, anthropogenic compounds). These ratios are maintained as the organic matter moves through the biosphere and geosphere. A mixture of organic matter from two sources has isotope ratios intermediate between those of the two sources, in proportion to the fraction of material from each source. Isotope ratios are one of the few methods which can trace organic matter as it moves through natural ecosystems. Ratios can be measured on both the total organic matter and on particular chemical fractions or compounds. When used on organisms, isotope ratios provide information of organic matter actually assimilated into body tissues, not just material ingested. As with all tools, this method has certain limitations which must be borne in mind when interpreting its results. Firstly, specific environmental conditions must be met. This generally means an ecosystem with a limited and known number of sources of organic matter having different isotope ratios. Two sources with different isotope ratios are ideal; additional sources with other isotope ratios complicate interpretation. Secondly, the difference in isotope ratios of the two sources should be large compared with analytical variability. Thirdly, the ratios within each source should vary as little as possible. 384 pp. Englisch.

The basic theme is to develop extensions of classical feedback theory from scalar to multivariable systems, and the obstacle is the fact that multivariable systems may possess properties having no scalar analogue. The monograph contains sections reviewing ideas from classical control theory that are extended to multivariable systems, a summary of work we have done on design limitation in scalar systems, and a review of some previous work on extending classical ideas to a multivariable setting. The bulk of the monograph develops analysis methods with which to study properties of multivariable systems having no scalar analogue. Although the monograph does contain expository material, its primary character is that of a research monograph, and its primary audience researchers in the field of linear multivariable control. Its contents should be accessible to a first year graduate student with a good knowledge of classical feedback theory. 296 pp. Englisch.

The disappointment climaxed with the papers of Meese and Rogoff (1983a, 1983b), who showed that a 'naive' random walk model distinctly dominated received theoretical models in terms of predictive performance for the major dollar spot rates. One purpose of this monograph is to seek the reasons for this failure by exploring the temporal behavior of seven major dollar exchange rates using nonstructural time-series methods. The Meese-Rogoff finding does not mean that exchange rates evolve as random walks; rather it simply means that the random walk is a better stochastic approximation than any of their other candidate models. In this monograph, we use optimal model specification techniques, including formal unit root tests which allow for trend, and find that all of the exchange rates studied do in fact evolve as random walks or random walks with drift (to a very close approximation). This result is consistent with efficient asset markets, and provides an explanation for the Meese-Rogoff results. Far more subtle forces are at work, however, which lead to interesting econometric problems and have implications for the measurement of exchange rate volatility and moment structure. It is shown that all exchange rates display substantial conditional heteroskedasticity. A particularly reasonable parameterization of this conditional heteroskedasticity, which captures the observed clustering of prediction error variances, is developed in Chapter 2. 160 pp. Englisch.

The author, Catherine Roy, has very extensive experience in the clinical use of sonography. The systematic use of schematic drawings to interpret the images makes it possible for the reader to follow the author's approach without any difficulty. Schematic drawings are par ticularly important in sonography because the relationship be tween the details in the images and the anatomy may be very weak. Owing to its breadth and important application potential, the field of pattern recognition has been attracting considerable attention of researchers in academia and industry and consequently it has been witnessing a rapid growth and perpetual development. The need for dissemination of the latest results is being served by a host of international conferences on pattern recognition. One such series of meetings is regularly held in the United Kingdom under the auspices of the British Pattern Recognition Association. This volume contains papers presented at the BPRA 4th International Conference on Pattern Recognition held in Cambridge, March 28-30, 1988. Alongside the conventional topics of statistical and syntactic pattern recognition, contributions address issues in the hot subject areas of adaptive learning networks, computer vision, knowledge base methods and architectures for pattern processing, and among others, report progress in the application domains of document processing, speech and text recognition and shape analysis for industrial robotics. It is believed that the collection is not merely a report on current activities but that it will also be an important source of inspiration for future developments in the field of pattern recognition. 680 pp. Englisch.

The pro ject was started in spring 1984 and will end in April 1988 with a congress. This congress addresses the scientific community to present experiences and results with a program of lectures and demonstrations. The HECTOR Project has two major aspects: the first is to explore new ways in uni versity education. The second aspect of HECTOR comprises basic research work to develop new technological concepts for the establishment of computer communication networks, supporting academic research and education in all disciplines. The underlying concept is that now and in the future, computer, software and commu nication systems which are required for the broad range of scientific and educational tasks will be of different technical orientation and made by different manufacturers. These diverse systems will, however, need to coexist and cooperate side by side. Today, in most cases, different hardware and software architectures of different manu facturers prevent a scientist or student from choosing freely the computer and software which offers the best alternative for solving his or her current problem. The mutual cooperation of the academic users is also hindered substantially by the many incompa tibilities present. The users' future is therefore transparency in a heterogeneous envi ronment. 424 pp. Englisch.

Vandereycken When we were preparing this book, the main purpose was to gather the latest in sights from both basic and clinical research in bulimic disorders. The burgeoning scientific interest in eating disorders forced us to restrict the focus in such a way that attention was only paid to psychobiological aspects of (disturbed) nutrition and be havior. This implied that other important aspects, like sociocultural and familial fac tors, had to be excluded. But it turned out that even with such a restricted scope the subject was not an easy one. A review of the contributions to this volume clearly shows that our present understanding of bulimia nervosa is still very small. Reviewing the hypothalamic and especially neuroendocrine regulation of nutrient balance, Bray has emphasized the importance of the autonomic nervous system in regulating food intake and energy expenditure. The role of insulin, adrenal steroids, gonadal steroids, and growth hormone in modulating nutrient intake and storage were discussed. The studies by Jimerson et aI. , Schweiger et aI. , and Fichter et al. show that all these factors are altered in bulimic patients, indicating that the whole system of regulating food intake and storage is severely disturbed in bulimia nervosa. Evidence has been presented that neurotransmitter alterations may occur in bulimia: Jimerson et al. 196 pp. Englisch.

220 pp. Deutsch.

440 pp. Deutsch.

456 pp. Deutsch.
