Roberts is an undisputed master of his craft. His acclaimed "History of the World" (OUP) has been one of the most astounding phenomena in modern-history publishing. W/ it, Roberts has made hundreds of thousands of readers around the globe deeply aware of the pleasures of history & has demonstrated that a historian can create a view of the world that is genuinely international in its scope & interests. In "Twentieth Century" Professor Roberts has given us an authoritative & engrossing survey of the tumultuous century just past. "Twentieth Century" allows us to understand the extraordinarily dynamic & extraordinarily disturbing century through which we have all lived. Brilliant both for its grand political sweep & its unprecedented grasp of massive social change, Roberts' work goes beyond simple narrative in distinguishing the major long-term changes that run beneath the flux of events to establish a true world history & not merely a story of the relations of powers & governments. As Roberts shows, the fundamental changes of the 20th century fall outside the framework that conventional international relations & its history employs. These changes include a worldwide increase in life expectancy, revolutionary strides in science & technology, & the radical configuration of the global economy. In order to give emphasis to his wide-ranging themes, Roberts opens w/ a grand survey of the century's beginnings to show the ways in which the world of 1901 did NOT foreshadow our own, & how all of our most basic assumptions from this earlier time have vanished. Chronicling the historically significant events of the last hundred years in a sweeping & always lively continuous narrative, Roberts then closes his work w/ a penetrating retrospect which assesses the position of humanity as it confronts the dawn of a new age. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: J.M. Roberts, former Warden of Merton College, Oxford, is the author of numerous works of history, including "History of the World" & "A History of Europe.".

Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially and virtually flawless copy and dust jacket with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations.

David Haward Bain has managed to encompass it all--genuine heroism & brutal dispossession, Utopian vision & rampant corruption, technological wonders & war w/ the elements--in a VIVID narrative that no one interested in the American character will want to miss." -Geoffrey C. Ward, author of "The West, an Illustrated History" & coauthor of "The Civil War", & many other distinguished works of history. "'Empire Express' is one of those books that anyone w/ an interest in railroad history or the American West must acquire & keep close at hand. It is GARGANTUAN, truly TOWERING, and thanks to David Haward Bain's lengthy & painstaking research it is as complete as this subject can ever be. Bain uses the voices of the transcontinental railroad's builders to tell much of this epic tale. Furthermore, to enliven his narrative he brings in contemporary events relative to this great American endeavor." -Dee Brown, author of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" & "Hear that Lonesome Whistle Blow" * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: DAVID HAWARD BAIN is the author of several well-received & prize-winning works of non-fiction. Odysseus' reliance on his wit & wiliness for survival in his encounters w/ divine & natural forces is at once the human story & an individual test of moral endurance. In the myths & legends that are magnificently retold here, Fagles has captured the energy & poetry of Homer's original in a bold, contemporary idiom & given us an Odyssey to read aloud, to savor & to treasure for its sheer lyrical mastery. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox's superb introduction & textual commentary provide new insights & background information for the general reader & scholar, intensifying the strength of Fagles' translation. This is an Odyssey to delight both the classicist & the public at large, & to captivate a new generation of Homer's students. * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: Robert Fagles, the winner of the PEN-Ralph Mannheim Medal for Translation & an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, is Arthur W. Marks '19 Professor of Comparative Literature, Emeritus, at Princeton University & received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Yale University. * Bernard Knox is Director Emeritus of Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "Fagles' 'Odyssey' is a splendid companion piece to his memorable English version of the 'Iliad'. He has managed to create a poetic style that combines the pungency of modern colloquial English w/ a timeless dignity. The sensory values of Odysseus' archaic world, the snap of sails, the scud of sea-foam & the gleam of burnished bronze come wonderfully alive in this supple, rhythmic English" - Robert Alter, University of California, Berkeley * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee of $14.00 & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to all international destinations at our posted below-cost rates or as quoted on request.

No other book covers the entire region & offers such profound insights into the roots of Balkan violence or explains so vividly the origins of modern Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, & Albania. Many reader's have welcomed the author's insights into the final century of Ottoman rule, a complex & colorful period, knowledge of which is essential for understanding recent conflicts that have so troubled the area. Glenny's account of ea. national group in the Balkans & its struggle for statehood is lucid & fair-minded, & he brings the culture of different nationalisms to life. The narrative is permeated w/ sharply observed set pieces of kings, guerrillas, bandits, generals & politicians. He interweaves a narrative of key events w/ the story of international affairs--the relations in states in the Balkans & between them & the great powers. It is the latter relationship that lies at the heart of this compulsively readable book. Glenny shows how the great-power interference in the region has been catastrophic for the peoples of the Balkans & how so-called "ancient hatreds" & "tribal rivalries" have often been intensified by ignorant diplomats in distant capitals, creating states, allocating populations & redrawing borders--w/ deadly consequences. It remains to be seen, Glenny argues in a terse epilogue, whether the recent Western intervention will have a more benign outcome. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "As readers are reminded by Misha Glenney's SWEEPING, FAIRMINDED & AUTHORITATIVE history, the demise of multinational empires (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, & finally Soviet) has often re-exposed ancient fault-lines--rarely making conflict inevitable, but often making conflict possible. Mr. Glenney's book is ADMIRABLY full of uncomfortable passages for nationalist historians who try to view the region's history as a Manichean struggle between one neatly defined ethnic & religious community (Ottoman Greeks, Bosnian Muslims, Croatian Catholics) & their abiding enemies." -The Economist "Misha Glenney is the WISEST & most REFLECTIVE of all the Western journalists who have covered this part of Europe in the past two decades." -Neal Ascherson, The Observer "Glenney has written an EPIC book, ESSENTIAL reading for all who want to understand tie extraordinary complex region." -The Scotsman * SHIPPING: We custom-wrap, label & securely package this fine book w/ our greatest care for FREE shipment within the United States via USPS MEDIA MAIL (or via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost charge), or for prompt delivery to international destinations via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL MAIL at our posted below-cost rates.
