Folio, 18th century mottled half calf over blue-green marbled paper boards, decorative gilt spine, red morocco lettering piece, pp. [iv] + 26. Fine allegorical copperplate title (incorporating a small map of the British Isles), letter press title printed in red & black, 47 copperplate charts & profiles (5 folding, 3 single page, the remainder double page) and one chart in the text (at p18). A couple of the folding maps just torn at fold, some browning and offsetting, text spotted in places, but still a handsome copy. First published in 1693 and reissued many times throughout the eighteenth century, this formidable and costly project, [was] the first systematic survey of British coastal waters (Moreland & Bannister, Antique Maps, 3rd ed p163). (511*322 mm). (Phillips 5199. Moreland & Bannister). In 1667 the Dutch sailed up the Thames and destroyed a great part of the British Navy in the Medway and bombarded Chatham. [an] the Government was shaken. by the realisation that the Dutch new more about the coastline of England than the English themselves, and their confidence was not increased when it was found that John Seller, in producing the first volume of his marine atlas, the English Pilot, in 1671, was still using Dutch plates and often very old ones at that. As now, government was tardy in action and it was not until 1681 that Samuel Pepys, as Secretary of the Navy, instructed Captain Greenville Collins to carry out a survey of British coasts and harbours. In due course, after a seven year survey, Captain Collins issued in 1693 the Great Britain's Coasting Pilot, an outstanding work consisting of 48 charts, the first complete Pilot Book in English of all the coasts of Great Britain and the surrounding islands with special attention, of course, to the ports (Moreland & Bannister). In 1693, he finally published his results in a folio volume of two parts, Great Britain's Coasting Pilot, containing sailing directions, tide tables, coastal views and about forty-nine charts. The charts were not completely accurate, but with all their shortcomings they were an enormous advance on anything before them, and entitle Collins to rank not only with the earliest, but with the best of English hydrographers. The work covered England and Scotland, and though Collins proposed a further study to cover Ireland, the plan came to nothing. Collins recorded that he had spent £40 on instruments, and charged £80 for the 120 manuscript maps he delivered. With his claim for expenses set at £200 per annum, and his wages of £394 10s., he claimed a total of £1914 10s. for his work, which was eventually paid in arrears. The cost was more than three times the original estimate. His cousin, Freeman Collins, printed the Coasting Pilot, which Richard Mount sold. Mount's subsequent firm then went on to publish twenty-one further editions of the pilot throughout the nineteenth century.

The blank reverse of the contents leaf carries the stamp of the Incorporated Law Society (also on blank verso of last leaf), and the withdrawal stamp of the Law Society. In modern calf half-binding, marbled boards, gilt. A good, tight copy on aged paper; with binding in excellent condition. Around 1805 Illingworth was appointed Deputy Keeper of the Records in the Tower of London; he resigned in 1819. In expectation 'of becoming a subcommissioner under the new record commission at Christmas 1832, he drew up for the private use of the commissioners, in May 1831', the present item, of which only fifty copies were printed, 'by the board [.] for the private use of the commissioners' (Oxford DNB). The only copies on COPAC are at the British Library, National Library of Scotland, Oxford, Lambeth Palace, University of London, and Manchester.

The Ingleton Copy (Geoffrey and Nan, with their book plate on front paste-down), formerly the property of Admiral Phillip P. King (with his initialed annotation on p. 273 and penciled marginalia in his hand, including a slip of notations on laid paper tipped in following p. 264. Geoffrey Ingleton was a bibliophile and amateur etcher, mainly of historical marine subjects. King, 1791-1856, was an early explorer of the Australian and Patagonian coasts.) An exemplary, wide-margined example in a handsome binding, occasional foxing, a few sporadic stains, else fresh and bright, the charts, maps and plates in fine impressions, properly folded and free of tears. Hill 1328. Sabin 6870. Palau 222526. Translated from the French and reissued from the first English edition sheets of 1771 with new title page (Sabin). Both English issues are considered superior to the French octavo editions of 1769 (Berlin) and 1770 (Paris), and include new charts and plans. After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 ending the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War), Louis Antoine de Bougainville set sail from the port of Saint Malo in northwestern France on the English Channel with a crew of a hundred and fifty people, one of whom, the Benedictine naturalist Antoine-Joseph Pernety, was on board to chronicle the expedition. Bougainville's intent was to establish a colony on the Falklands for the French Canadians (the "Arcadians") who had been expelled from Canada during the French and Indian War and to secure a strategic position for France near the Straits of Magellan on the sea route to the Pacific. (Because his ships and crew originated from St. Malo, Bougainville named the islands the Malouines and planted the French flag at Fort St. Louis on the eastern island in 1764.) At the time, the islands were almost unknown, and Bougainville must have been unaware that the Englishman John Strong had made the first landing in 1690, naming Falkland Sound in honor of Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount of Falkland, Treasurer of the British Navy. Pernety also described a subsequent expedition, in 1765, during which the French encountered a British squadron under John Byron, who reasserted possession of the Falklands on behalf of Britain, nearly sparking the outbreak of war between Great Britain and Spain, which claimed the archipelago as part of Spanish Patagonia. And so began the Falklands controversy. By the time Pernety's account was first published in 1769, Bougainville had dismantled the French colony during his circumnavigation of 1766-1769 in response to Spanish protests. N. B.
