Remains of publisher's blue advertising label on front inner cover; some signatures slightly browned, but overall internally clean and tight. Upper margin tears to three leaves, with no loss.

Hardcover. First Edition. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards; 342 pages. Population and census data by county. Early bookplate on front pastedown and signature on front endpaper of John F. Fager of Harrisburg. Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his sons were the leading publishers of maps in the United States during most of the nineteenth century. Mitchell had come to Philadelphia around 1830 with the intention of improving the standard of geography textbooks. A New American Atlas, published in 1831, was his first work. Then, in 1845 he acquired the rights to Tanner's New Universal Atlas, and in 1846 he published his first edition of the present work. Mitchell continued to publish the atlas until 1850, when he sold the copyright to Cowperthwaite & Co. of Philadelphia, who continued to publish it until the mid-1850s, when It was purchased by Charles DeSilver. Lacks, as usual, the scarce accompanying map. Very Good.

Mounted on front pastedown printed advertisement for Mitchell & Hinman, No. 6, North Fifth Street, Philadelphia, "publish, and have constantly for sale, on as accommodating terms as any other establishmnet in the country, maps of the United States, and of every state and territory in the Union.".

The map, which is an extremely large wall map, is not included. 324 pp. This is a gazetteer of the United States, designed to accompany Mitchell's large map. Incorporates listings of the railroads, canals and stage routes in operation and under construction at the time. Also includes an early description of Wisconsin Territory. Comparison with the 1834 first edition reveal no apparent textual changes aside from the publication date. American Imprints 33089, Howes M684, Thomson 1062.
