Un des grands officiers de la Couronne, un Maréchal de France, a été lâchement assassiné ; et, depuis près de quatre ans, ce crime, si public, si notoire, si révoltant, n'a pas été puni [] Pourquoi, à l'insu de Votre Majesté, dans son propre palais, la mort du Maréchal a-t-elle reçu une sorte de ratification ? On a craint apparemment que son image resté dans le salon des Maréchaux ne vous rappelât le forfait, et qu'en traversant cette salle pour aller prier Dieu qui protège la France, il ne vous vint à l'esprit de faire punir les coupables. [ . ] Je demande justice, Sire : Justice du meurtre de mon époux ; Justice de l'outrage fait à son cadavre ; Justice de l'insulte faite à sa mémoire par ceux qui ont osé l'accuser de suicide [. ]" Le Maréchal Brune avait été tué par la foule à Avignon le 2 août 1815, mais la presse repris l'hypothèse infâmante du suicide. Son épouse, défendue par le célèbre avocat Dupin, obtint du roi le droit de poursuivre les assassins, la reconnaissance que le maréchal n'avait pas porté la tête de la princesse de Lamballe comme on l'en accusait injustement et le retour de son portrait parmi la galerie des Maréchaux de l'Empire.
