First edition. Octavo. pp [xvi], 143. Eight plates from photographs by Francis Bruguiere showing the expressionistic stage sets designed by Lee Simonson. Despite its reputation as a landmark in American theatre history the play ran for no more than two months when it first appeared on Broadway and has seldom been revived since then. A film version was produced in 1969.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper: ''To Edward G. Robinson from Elmer Rice - August 1923.'' In the play Robinson played the role of the heavenly being Shrdlu, this being an early stage appearance.Head and tail of spine slightly pushed. Small bump to top corner of rear cover. Very good indeed. No dustwrapper. An important association copy.
