No Binding. Condition: Fair. RARE engraving from noted American engraver Peter Maverick. AERONAUTICS (Antique hand-colored engraving). Plate 111 in top right corner. Depicts Lana's Aeronautic Vessel; Montgolfier's Balloon; Blanchard's Balloon and Charles & Robert's Balloon. Fig.5 is untitled. "Engraved by P.Maverick, Newark, NJ"… along the bottom. Dimensions approximately 10 3/8 x 8 ins. undated estimate 1809-1818. Peter Maverick (1780-1831), son of Peter Rushton Maverick and Ann Reynolds, was the most eminent of the Maverick family of engravers and a pioneer in the art of lithography. He lived and worked in New York City and, for more than a decade, in Newark. In 1809 he moved his family and shop from New York to a farm he had purchased on the Newark-Belleville road (now Broadway), later building a cottage on the "drift road" west of modern-day Lincoln Avenue and north of Chester Avenue. Maverick's years as a Newark engraver were among his most prolific, and included the period in which Asher Brown Durand (see below) was his apprentice and business partner. Many signed engravings of this period bear the names of "P. Maverick and Durand." John William Casilear was another distinguished pupil, and Maverick trained at least two of his many daughters, Emily and Maria Ann, and his son Peter Jr. in the trade as well. In 1961, Dr. Jastrow set up NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. He served as director of the Goddard Institute until his retirement from NASA in 1981. In recognition of his work in NASA, Dr. Jastrow received the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and the Arthur S. Fleming Award for Outstanding Service in the U.S. Government. Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. near fine. First Edition. Octavo, 260pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's grey cloth. Very gentle edgewear. In a near fine dust jacket, gently faded on the spine. A wonderful copy, SIGNED and lengthily inscribed by the author to the first person named in the Acknow…ledgements and dated in the year of publication: "To Miss Brown, With many, many thanks for all the help you and your co-workers gave me in gathering material and pictures for this book. It was really a pleasure working in your library. Sincerely, Charles Paul May." The book is geared towards a teenage/adolescent audience, and gives a richly detailed history of the many female aviation pioneers, as far back as the eighteenth century. "Miss Brown" (no other first name is given) is the first person that May thanks in the Acknowledgements; evidently she was his contact at the Institute for Aerospace Sciences. An appealing copy of this mid-20th century history of women in aviation.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Gray cloth with blindstamped decorations. Gold lettering on the spine. Binding has been bumped around a bit, with curled corners, rubbing and some splotches, fading to the spine. Crown and foot of spine a bit threadbare and bumped. Title page dated 1850. 310 pages. Illustrated…with lithographic plates. Text block tight. Pages toned from age, and also with some marginal halfmoons of moisture damage, in the top margin throughout and on the outer margin for the first quarter. Frontispiece engraving of John Wise has a large chuck torn from the bottom margin, but not affecting the image. Overall, the book has the look of one that was used in the field for practical purposes, not kept in a sterile library. Some intriguing inscriptions on the endpapers. Inside front cover in pencil, the name Charles S. Flagg, Lancaster. Somewhat messy evidence of bookplate removed from inside front cover. Free endpaper has several more inscriptions in pencil. "Charles E. wise of Lancaster PA." "John Wise Lancaster" "ASL. J.B.S. Presented to C.S. Flagg." "Vices Wm. J. Bote." At the top corner of the front endpaper the name "John Wise" is signed in pen. The signature there is i na different hand than the other markings on this page, and is a very close match to the example of the author's signature as shown on the engraved portrait plate. Second blank page has "The Property of Charles D. Flagg. Presented by Charles E. Wise of Lancaster Pia." Portrait plate and protective tissue both faded and stained. We have another copy with author inscription where he has written "from the author" rather than his name, but this copy may have been his personal copy (as evidenced by his son giving it away) which might explain both the modest signature at the wear and tear from moisture and use. Please email with questions or to request photos. If there is a photo beside this listing, please note that it was placed there by ABE without our permission and is likely what they call a 'stock photo' (whatever that is). This volume is part of a large collection of Aviation and Ballooning books, a catalogue of which is available upon request. Most of the volumes have a small pencil notation on the first blank page - the letters KB and a number. Signed by Author(s).

Photomechanically reproduced typescript, staple-bound, some creasing, file number sticker to the front page, else very good. Presentation copy, inscribed by Lederberg on the front page: "I think you will enjoy this. J." ExAbraham Pais. Part II of Lederberg's DENDR…AL-64 series, supported by NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health, and submitted from the Department of Genetics, School of Medicine, Stanford University. Where Part I established a canonical formulation for chemical graphs that are pure trees (that is, acyclic molecular structures representable as single branching hierarchies), Part II addresses the harder problem of ring structures, defined here as strictly cyclic graphs: sets of atoms not separable by fewer than two cuts. Part III, as the introduction indicates, will extend the analysis to complete structures in which rings appear as special nodes within a larger tree. The report is concerned with the topology of cyclic graphs as a foundation for the systematic computer enumeration of organic ring systems, from simple cycles such as benzene to polycyclic structures including the steroid nucleus, the morphine nucleus, naphthalene, and biphenyl, each assigned a unique graph-theoretic encoding. The objectives set out for the treatment of trivalent cyclic graphs (enumeration of all possible graphs, identification of isomorphisms between superficially different representations, rational description and ordering of each graph, characterization of symmetries, rational numbering of vertices and paths, and compact computable notation) define a program that is recognizably that of modern cheminformatics, pursued here at the moment of its inception. This report is an early technical foundation of the DENDRAL project, the first expert system in the history of artificial intelligence, which sought to encode the reasoning of a chemist skilled in mass spectrometric structure determination and make it executable by machine. Lederberg's graph-theoretic approach to molecular structure was the mathematical substrate on which that ambition rested. The methods developed here thus stand at the origin of both computational chemistry and machine reasoning about scientific problems, two fields whose subsequent development has touched virtually every area of drug discovery, materials science, and chemical research. The recipient, Abraham Pais, was theoretical physicist, historian of twentieth-century science, and author of the definitive scientific biographies of Einstein and Bohr; a provenance that unites two of the most consequential scientific intellects of the postwar decades. In the context of artificial intelligence, DENDRAL-64 Part II is best understood not as a curiosity of chemical graph theory but as an essential structural pillar of the first expert system, and the one that set the template for all that followed. What Lederberg accomplishes here is to make molecular structures (especially the complex ring systems that had resisted systematic treatment) available to symbolic reasoning, giving the computer a precise, unambiguous language in which to generate, label, and compare them. Without that foundation, the larger DENDRAL ambition was simply impossible: "chemists' intuition" about plausible structures cannot be translated into executable rules unless the structures themselves can be represented without ambiguity or redundancy. With it, DENDRAL could do something no program had done before: systematically explore the space of chemically possible candidates, discard equivalents, and converge on solutions that matched experimental data, behaving, in effect, like a genuine domain expert. In this sense, the report stands at the effective origin point of knowledge?based AI in scientific practice, setting the template for how later systems in medicine and engineering would encode and manipulate expert knowledge. While its techniques belong to th.
