No Binding. Condition: Fair. RARE engraving from noted American engraver Peter Maverick. AERONAUTICS (Antique hand-colored engraving). Plate 111 in top right corner. Depicts Lana's Aeronautic Vessel; Montgolfier's Balloon; Blanchard's Balloon and Charles & Robert's Balloon. Fig.5 is untitled. "Engraved by P.Maverick, Newark, NJ" along the bottom. Dimensions approximately 10 3/8 x 8 ins. undated estimate 1809-1818. Peter Maverick (1780-1831), son of Peter Rushton Maverick and Ann Reynolds, was the most eminent of the Maverick family of engravers and a pioneer in the art of lithography. He lived and worked in New York City and, for more than a decade, in Newark. In 1809 he moved his family and shop from New York to a farm he had purchased on the Newark-Belleville road (now Broadway), later building a cottage on the "drift road" west of modern-day Lincoln Avenue and north of Chester Avenue. Maverick's years as a Newark engraver were among his most prolific, and included the period in which Asher Brown Durand (see below) was his apprentice and business partner. Many signed engravings of this period bear the names of "P. Maverick and Durand." John William Casilear was another distinguished pupil, and Maverick trained at least two of his many daughters, Emily and Maria Ann, and his son Peter Jr. in the trade as well. Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First Edition. Octavo, 260pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's grey cloth. Very gentle edgewear. In a near fine dust jacket, gently faded on the spine. A wonderful copy, SIGNED and lengthily inscribed by the author to the first person named in the Acknowledgements and dated in the year of publication: "To Miss Brown, With many, many thanks for all the help you and your co-workers gave me in gathering material and pictures for this book. It was really a pleasure working in your library. Sincerely, Charles Paul May." The book is geared towards a teenage/adolescent audience, and gives a richly detailed history of the many female aviation pioneers, as far back as the eighteenth century. "Miss Brown" (no other first name is given) is the first person that May thanks in the Acknowledgements; evidently she was his contact at the Institute for Aerospace Sciences. An appealing copy of this mid-20th century history of women in aviation.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Gray cloth with blindstamped decorations. Gold lettering on the spine. Binding has been bumped around a bit, with curled corners, rubbing and some splotches, fading to the spine. Crown and foot of spine a bit threadbare and bumped. Title page dated 1850. 310 pages. Illustrated with lithographic plates. Text block tight. Pages toned from age, and also with some marginal halfmoons of moisture damage, in the top margin throughout and on the outer margin for the first quarter. Frontispiece engraving of John Wise has a large chuck torn from the bottom margin, but not affecting the image. Overall, the book has the look of one that was used in the field for practical purposes, not kept in a sterile library. Some intriguing inscriptions on the endpapers. Inside front cover in pencil, the name Charles S. Flagg, Lancaster. Somewhat messy evidence of bookplate removed from inside front cover. Free endpaper has several more inscriptions in pencil. "Charles E. wise of Lancaster PA." "John Wise Lancaster" "ASL. J.B.S. Presented to C.S. Flagg." "Vices Wm. J. Bote." At the top corner of the front endpaper the name "John Wise" is signed in pen. The signature there is i na different hand than the other markings on this page, and is a very close match to the example of the author's signature as shown on the engraved portrait plate. Second blank page has "The Property of Charles D. Flagg. Presented by Charles E. Wise of Lancaster Pia." Portrait plate and protective tissue both faded and stained. We have another copy with author inscription where he has written "from the author" rather than his name, but this copy may have been his personal copy (as evidenced by his son giving it away) which might explain both the modest signature at the wear and tear from moisture and use. Please email with questions or to request photos. If there is a photo beside this listing, please note that it was placed there by ABE without our permission and is likely what they call a 'stock photo' (whatever that is). This volume is part of a large collection of Aviation and Ballooning books, a catalogue of which is available upon request. Most of the volumes have a small pencil notation on the first blank page - the letters KB and a number. Signed by Author(s).
