Wrappers. 5.875 x 9 inches. Wrappers. 96 pages. Catalogue for an exihibit at the Grolier Club, November 8, 2018 - January 5, 2019. Bibliophile, book dealer, calligrapher, serial club founder, gourmet and dandy, A. J. A. Symons is now best remembered as the author of The Quest For Corvo. All of his interests are captured in manuscripts, books, letters, membership lists, photos, catalogues, rule books, and ephemera from the collection of Simon Hewett. Symons achieved an extraordinary amount in his 41-year life. The exhibition explored the multifaceted activities of this now largely forgotten figure particularly through the clubs he formed and in which he participated. Symons co-founded The First Edition Club in 1922, a club for book collectors which he envisioned as the British counterpart to The Grolier Club of New York City. Through his membership in the London bibliophilic dining club, Sette of Odd Volumes, Symons met Andre Simon, the celebrated oenophile. Together in 1931 they founded the Saintsbury Club, a London dining club for wine-lovers. In 1933, they set up the Wine & Food Society (now the International Wine & Food Society). Designed and printed letterpress by Jerry Kelly on Hahnemuhle Bugra mold-made paper.

From the publisher: "Aja has disturbing powers. She feels cursed, but the FBI thinks otherwise. Will she stop a serial rapist and killer or become his next victim? Aja's life has been one misfortune after another. She was dropped at birth, scarring her face. Her father left when she was 7 years old. Now, as a teenager, not only does she have to contend with puberty, but certain people experience pain or become sick in her presence. Desperate to find answers to her distressing effect on people, she finds them in a most unlikely place, the FBI Academy. There, she discovers her powers may actually be a gift. A gift that, if harnessed, may help the FBI track down the Peace Sign Killer - a serial rapist and murderer. Can Aja successfully exploit her powers to stop the Peace Sign Killer? Or will Aja's misfortune continue making her his next victim? AJA MINOR: GIFTED OR CURSED is the first book in a psychic crime thriller series. Pitting a coming-of-age girl with an extraordinary gift and indomitable spirit against some of the most depraved criminals imaginable.". 1st ed? (No additional printings listed). Softcover. New. "I can't help regretting the amount of time AJ spent on the minutiae of bibliography," writes Julian Symons, author of A.J.A. Symons: his life and speculations (1950). "He made his own elaborate defence of it (see page 86 of my biography [on which the author quotes an example of what he calls his brother's ingenious special pleading]), but it does not convince me and perhaps did not convince him. Bibliography followed as an end in itself is surely a Mecca for little minds, not those that range widely like his." George Ramsden, author of an enthralling bibliography of the poet Christopher Logue, has another end in this well-illustrated 101-item catalogue. He celebrates the life of an entrepreneurial book collector who died untimely, nine days after his 41st birthday. The books and manuscripts Ramsden offers for sale include a series of early letters from Symons to a correspondent unknown to his brother, Alan Instrell, a mass of First Edition Club publications and ephemera, and books inscribed by Symons to Max Beerbohm, Tancred Borenius, Oliver Brett and Maundy Gregory. Not in Walsdorf & Allen.

"I was told that Mrs. L's talk was often of the crude and blueish order. I don't know how much truth there is in it. W. liked well enough to talk of sex matters but he did it in chastened terms, at least in my experience, and as I say in my book, professed a dislike of talk which may be called broad . . . After [the crash] and for several years [Mrs L's] attitude was that she had never had but the slightest acquaintance with him. I think it was Le Gallienne who brought her round to seeing the advantage there was for her in taking another standpoint." "This booklet illustrates the best qualities of private press work," wrote George Sims (catalogue 92): "first rate design printing and paper combined with a distinguished text of a neglected author. The notes give interesting biographical data and some of the letters are fascinating.".
