Encuadernación de tapa blanda. Condition: Muy bien. 1ª Edición. In-8º. 146 (5)pp. Wrappers VG copy. Inscribed, dated and signed by the author. "Para Ulyses Petit de Murat con la admiracion y el afecto de su amigo Jorge Luis Borges Buenos Aires Noviembre 1949". Petit de Murat was Borges's oldest and longest friendship; it began in the 1920s, when Borges was almost unknown, and lasted for more than half a century. The friends ate together at the Borges' house, at 222 Quintana Street; they went to the famous gatherings at the Royal Keller and the Café Tortoni, where Borges, who was already afraid of speaking in public, would talk with Carlos Mastronardi, Francisco Luis Bernárdez, Raúl González Tuñón and Xul Solar. Petit de Murat also remembers that Borges composed a tango, Biaba con caldo, and recalls his encounters with the sisters Norah and Haydée Lange and his walks along Montenegro Street. Towards the middle of 1933, Ulyses Petit de Murat had a brilliant idea: he introduced Borges to Natalio Botana, the owner of Crítica, the most popular newspaper in the country. One had to have imagination to think of such a meeting. At that meeting, Botana proposed to the two friends that they direct a supplement of the newspaper that would be published on Saturdays. Borges was thirty-three years old and for the first time in his life he would earn money; what's more, it was a very good salary: three hundred pesos. The Aleph is the second narrative summit of Borges and, together with Ficciones, one of his paradigmatic books. The mere enumeration of the stories that compose it headed by the El Aleph that gives title to the compilation would account for the endless richness of its writing and the inexhaustible conceptual spring that individualize it in the literature of the century. The fantastic universe, the mathematical and metaphysical mysteries, the intrigues, but also the historical and poetic sensitivity, produce here enduring metaphors, definitely incorporated into the collective unconscious.
