Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. First American Edition. First American edition, first printing with a handwritten inscription by Alice B. Toklas of her legendary "Haschich Fudge" recipe written across one and a quarter blank pages at the rear of the book. Pretty rad indeed. Bound in publisher's original orange cloth boards over green spine cloth stamped in gilt and orange. Near Fine with light soiling to bottom edge in a Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket with wear at the crown and edges, light fading to spine, light tanning and light soiling. The notorious drug-laden recipe was printed in the British edition but omitted from this American edition as it was deemed "too dangerous." Laid in is a signed typed letter dated 11 April 1974, from author Samuel M. Steward, a close friend of both Toklas and Gertrude Stein, written to Ronald R. Randall (who evidently sold the book to John Howell Books) regarding the provenance of the inscribed recipe and how it was obtained: "When [this work] was first published in the United States in 1954, Harper was reluctant to include the so-called recipe for 'marijuana brownies' which had already appeared in the British edition. Noticing this omission, the following Christmas season when I went to Europe, I took along the American edition of the Cookbook and complained rather wistfully to Alice about the omission of the recipe (it was not included in the American edition until some time later). 'Leave the book with me over night,' she said, 'and I will give it to you tomorrow.' When she did, the next day, I noted with delight (and some consternation at the length of the recipe, which I had forgotten) that she had copied out the entire recipe on the back fly-leaves of the book, in her miniscule handwriting which had not then yet enlarged itself because of her failing eyesight. This is possibly the most famous recipe of the twentieth century, yet curiously enough, it was sent to Alice by Brian Gysen [sic], a friend". The inclusion of the recipe was a last-minute addition. With a deadline looming mere months away and space to fill, Toklas decided to ask those in her social circle to contribute their own recipes including Gysin's. The recipe was further solidified in popular culture by the 1968 film I Love You Alice B. Toklas where Peter Sellers' character is seduced by a hippie and her hash brownies. The recipe, which Toklas states "anyone could whip up on a rainy day", is considered to bring about "euphoria and brilliant storms of laughter; ecstatic reveries and extensions of one's personality on several simultaneous planes are to be complacently expected".

First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "For Jeanne Coppel, appreciatively, Alice B. Toklas", and signed by the illustrator on the same page with a drawing of a rose. The painter and collagist Jeanne Coppel (1896-1971) was an early practitioner of abstract and surrealist art who lived in Paris from 1919. She studied at Montparnasse's Académie Ranson under the Nabis painters Édouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis, and Paul Sérusier. Her works featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1961. A melange of traditional French recipes and anecdotes of Toklas's life in Paris with Gertrude Stein, the Cook Book is notorious for the "Haschich Fudge" recipe, given to Toklas by Brion Gysin, which was expurgated from the US edition published two days later. The recipe is a variation on the Moroccan confection majoun, which Gysin recommends as "an entertaining refreshment for a Ladies' Bridge Club or a chapter meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Euphoria and brilliant storms of laughter, ecstatic reveries and extensions of one's personality on several simultaneous planes are to be complacently expected" (p. 259). Octavo. Portrait frontispiece, chapter vignettes, and full-page line drawings, all by Rose. Original tan cloth, spine lettered in gilt on green ground and decorated in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge green. With supplied dust jacket. Ink annotation to p. 246. Cloth rubbed, endpapers and outer leaves lightly foxed, contents otherwise clean; jacket unclipped, slightly rubbed and toned, especially on spine, extremities a little worn with tape repairs to verso: a very good copy in very good jacket.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Bound in publisher's coarse beige cloth with gilt titles blocked in green on the spine. Near Fine with dulling to gilt, toning to pages, erased previous owner name to front free endpaper and previous owner gift inscription to half-title page. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with some toning and light edge wear, with a tear at the top of the rear spine joint repaired with tape on the blindside and with some associated creasing. A lovely copy in a striking jacket. Contains the infamous recipe for "Haschich Fudge" on page 259, which "anyone could whip up on a rainy day," that is, so long as one could procure all the necessary ingredients.

First edition, first impression, of one of the best-selling cookbooks of all time, notorious for its inclusion of the "Hashich Fudge" recipe on page 259 that was given to Toklas by Brion Gysin, and which was expurgated from the US edition, published two days later. Weaving together traditional French recipes and entertaining anecdotes of Toklas's life with Gertrude Stein in Paris, The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book is considered the counterpart to Stein's Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933) which had catapulted Toklas to fame. Harper, the New York publisher, approached Toklas in 1952 to persuade her to write something that would offer insight into her and Stein's relationship and the celebrated Paris salon that they had hosted. Despite her initial reluctance, Toklas signed a contract to write a book that was part memoir, part cookbook, and which paired food and cooking - one of Toklas's favourite pastimes - with the exciting people and events that had populated her life. Struggling for material and up against the deadline, she also solicited recipes from among her friends to help pad out the work. Those that contributed included Dora Maar, Mary Oliver (at the time in her late teens), Pierre Balmain, Natalie Clifford Barney, Carl Van Vechten, Joseph Delteil, and the chef of the Algonquin Hotel in New York. Brion Gysin, in Morocco at the time, jokingly responded with his variation on the Moroccan confection majoun, recommending it as the perfect refreshment for a ladies' bridge club or a Daughters of the American Revolution meeting. He introduced it thus: "This is the food of Paradise Euphoria and brilliant storms of laughter; ecstatic reveries and extensions of one's personality on several simultaneous planes are to be complacently expected. Almost anything Saint Theresa did, you can do better if you can bear to be ravished by 'un évanouissement reveillé'" (p. 259). In an interview to Pacifica Radio in 1963 Toklas explained that Gysin's recipe was "innocently included without my realising that the hashish was the accented part of the recipe, and then I was shocked to find that America wouldn't accept it, because it was too dangerous It never went into the American edition. The English are braver. We're not courageous about that sort of thing". Despite Harper refusing to printing it, embroiled as they were in enquiries over the legality of publishing such a recipe, its inclusion in the UK edition prompted a huge reaction, and Toklas's friend Thornton Wilder was said to have called it "the best publicity stunt of the year". It was eventually published in America in a second edition in the early 1960s. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece, chapter vignettes, and full-page line drawings, all by Rose. Original tan cloth, spine lettered in gilt on green ground and decorated in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge green. With dust jacket. A couple of trivial fingers marks; jacket unclipped, spine toned, a touch of creasing, nicks and chips to extremities: a near-fine copy in a very good jacket.

Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Sir Francis Rose (illustrator). First edition. A very smart first US edition of this iconic cookbook from Alice B. Toklas. The first US edition, first printing. Published two days after the UK edition. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding, with orange boards. One of the bestselling cookbooks of all time, this work contains as many personal recollections as it does recipes.Alice B. Toklas, life partner of American writer Gertrude Stein, wrote the book to make up for her unwillingness at the time to write her memoirs, in deference to Stein's 1933 book, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas.Toklas is notoriously associated with her famous culinary experiment "Hashish Fudge", made from spices, nuts, fruits and cannabis. The US edition unfortunately does not include this recipe.Charmingly illustrated throughout by Sir Francis Rose. In the original quarter cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities, most notable to the spine head and tail. Internally, firmly bound. With a couple spots to the endpapers, otherwise pages are bright and clean. Near Fine. book.
