Sonderdruck. Condition: Gut. S. 19-39. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Slightly rubbed, otherwise very well. - From the text: For a good part of the twentieth century, a number of Shakespeare editors and textual critics expended their energies and imaginations in efforts to produce a belief, contrary to that of most of their predecessors, that many of Shakespeares plays could be known to have been first printed from his own foul papers. As the twentieth century came to its end, this belief began to be questioned, with the result that it has recently become possible to appreciate not only that the belief is at odds with extant dramatic documents from around Shakespeares time, but also that the belief has limited editorial awareness of possible ways of reading the early printed Shakespeare texts. This paper briefly records the origins of the belief and, particularly, of its application to the first printing of Alls Well That Ends Well in what we now call the Shakespeare First Folio of 1623, noting how the belief has controlled editorial presentation of that text in the late twentieth century. By showing that the belief can be challenged through reference to manuscript evidence of play transcription from the period of Alls Wells first printing, this essay aims to lift artificial restrictions on editorial practice that were imposed by the belief that Alls Well was based directly on foul papers.
