The two signatures are on the same side of a 9 x 8.5 cm piece of pink paper, evidently cut from an autograph album. In good condition, lightly aged. At the head of the side is 'Aman ullah', boldly written with a flourish. At the foot of the side, underlined and rising upwards, is 'Leverhulme.' The two signatures could be easily separated as there is space between them. There is no other writing on the slip. See Image.

A striking and unusual Persian-language presentation certificate issued by the University of Oxford in 1928, conferring the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law upon Amanullah Khan, King of Afghanistan. This certificate relates to the state visit of King Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan to Britain in March 1928. On 23 March 1928, the King and Queen travelled to Oxford, where the University conferred upon Amanullah Khan the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law in a formal Convocation ceremony held at the Sheldonian Theatre. Contemporary press reports record that the ceremony followed traditional academic practice, with the degree formally conferred in Latin. During the same visit, translated versions of the diploma were prepared for presentation, consistent with the present Persian-language document. The visit formed part of Amanullah Khan's wider European tour of 1927-28, during which he sought to strengthen diplomatic relations and promote his programme of modernisation in Afghanistan. His reception at Oxford reflects the high level of international recognition he enjoyed at the time. Reference is made to contemporary newspaper coverage of March 1928 describing the Oxford ceremony, as well as institutional records noting the award of the honorary DCL on that date. The Persian text, headed "Translation of the Certificate", presents an official rendering of the University's Latin diploma in the recipient's own language. It is printed in an elegant Nasta'liq-style calligraphic type, combining formal academic language with refined Persian literary expression. Printed on high-quality paper and preserved within an imposing folio binding, the piece exemplifies the ceremonial presentation standards of the University. Such translated diplomas were produced in very small numbers for diplomatic purposes and rarely appear on the market. A hardback folio in cream linen cloth over boards, with gilt-ruled borders and a gilt Oxford University armorial device to the upper cover. Covers with light surface soiling. Sound and well preserved. Internally, 12 leaves of high-quality ivory paper, with two pages of Persian text. Clean and well presented throughout.  We will also supply a full English translation. This work deals with the life and career of Amir Amanullah, one of the most extraordinary personalities of Afghan history. He is remembered for his endeavors to reform Afghanistan and change it from medieval oriented and predominantly tribal country into a modern industrialized state. There is relatively very few works on this great Afghan statesman. This work may in the long run fill up certain wide gaps and missing links of his personality. He tried to take up the almost difficult task of reform and modernization to the hither to conservative and poor Afghan society during the first quarter of the 20th century. He had planned to bring Afghan state on the pattern of emerging 20th century modern European states. In his efforts of modernization he came into clashes with the regressive and backward looking traditionalist forces of the Afghan society. The Afghan society at that time as ever, was basically comprised of the rigid elements from the Afghan feudal and tribal segments.
