Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 8vo. 208pp. Some light, minor foxing to some pages, but otherwise in very good condition. Bound full vellum. Speckled edges. "Very rare second edition" (the first is by Giunta, 1519). of this collection of poetic compositions important for the evolution of Italian poetry of the sixteenth century.… Benivieni belonged to a family of supporters of Savonarola and Marsilio Ficino. It was in particular very close to Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, of which some compositions are inserted at the end of this edition. Gamba, 1068 (in note):" The publisher Biagio Bonaccorsi writes, that in the previous prints there were some of these imperfecti compositions et filled with many errors. Twice they were reprinted in Venice, Zoppino, 1522 and de 'Gregorii, 1524. They are Eglogues, Songs, Sonnets, Spiritual Laudi, Frottole and translations of the Bucolic of Mosco, of an elegy of Propertius, of some Psalms of David, of the " Dies irae", "Girolamo Benivieni, Florentine poet (1453-1542). Ficino's follower, he composed a latinizing allegorical poem entitled "Amore" and he exposed the theory of the divine love of the master in a song which Pico della Mirandola posted a large commentary on. Becoming a fervent follower of Savonarola, he repudiated the past, turned his Platonic-Petrarchian love poems to religious significance, and wrote laudi and songs of religious and ascetic inspiration (Treccani). As stated by Dionisotti, this edition is based on the previous Florentine but in the dedicatory it is emphasized that the work, badly printed in Florence "not otherwise brightening gem in dung lay", so the curator tal Cassiodoro Ticinensis had "with accurate vigilance to the first clarity reduced, not postponing the observation of the rules of the vulgar volgar ilanguage. They were not just words, as Dionisotti recognizes: "between Venice and Padua, three years before the Prose del Bembo came out, the Lombard Cassiodoro had taken to correct the Benevolent Works systematically, according to those" rules of the vulgar volgar language that the Friulian Fortunio had enunciated, and that however in Florence they were ignored or rejected. C. Dionisotti, Machiavellerie, Turin, 1980, pp.245 and 347. Nice figurative frontispiece (with scenes of knights, on foot and on horseback) and the inscriptions: Do not you do to me that you are not you for yourself (upper) - Who else caza for can not? (lower).
