It thus seems that his writing and his ideas fascinate many people. On the other hand, the scholarly work dealing with Marcus Aurelius and his book is rather poor, compared with other ancient authors, both among philo-logists and among philosophers. This may be due to the fact that, at first glance, Marcus Aureliuss book is aphoristic, making it difficult for someone accustomed to think in closed system categories, as demanded by modern scholarship. But this is also the very reason why so many become enthralled by the book. This book is also difficult to fit into one of the usual categories of literature or philosophy. One hesitates to classify it as exhortation or as consolation; it is neither a monologue nor a soliloquy.
