Seller: PASCALE'S BOOKS, NORTH READING, MA, U.S.A.
Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 135 pages, illustrated. "President Polk had asked John Appleton, one of his aides on the trip, to keep a daily journal. Appleton's Journal, numbering 135 manuscript pages, far exceeded Polk's forty-page allowance and afterwards became separated from the presidental diary. Generations of historians have had but this scanty knowledge of the existence of Appleton's rare and illuminating account of Polk's wartime travels north for Union. Now, for the first time, Appleton's Journal is presented to the public, and its publication is accompanied by a generous selection of Polk's correspondence detailing advance preparations for his presidential tour." FINE HARDCOVER, FINE DUST JACKET. Still in original shrinkwrap. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Magazine / Periodical
"Appleton's Journal" was a very popular weekly magazine in the late 1800s. These are 45 issues from1873, plus one from 1872. That one is from 1872. Each issue is around thirty 8.5" x 11.5" size pages. They are fragile and tattered and stained in places, mostly on the cover pages. They are perfectly readable and are in fair condition. They are also in the public domain, so you're free to use the text and images in any way you wish. Abe is unable to correctly determine shipping, so it MIGHT be different depending on where you are and how quickly you want it. If you email me your town and zip code, I can give you more options. It is definitely more affordable by media mail and sometimes only takes a day or two longer than priority, but on rare occasions it goes by ship, which adds three weeks to the journey.
Published by D. Appleton and Company, 1876
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Bound in 3/4 leather over marbled boards. Hardcover. Poor binding. Front board and end pages detached. Gutters weakened. Edges chipped. Occasional staining. Sold with all faults. Interesting works in this collection include: Gobelin Tapestry by Lucy H. Hooper; Mountaineering in Colorado by William H. Rideing; and The Tower of Percemont by George Sand. This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.
