L'Après-midi d'un faune (Der Nachmittag eines Fauns) ist ein symbolistisches Gedicht Stéphane Mallarmés, das dieser zwischen 1865 und 1867 geschrieben und 1876 veröffentlicht hat. Es gilt als sein bekanntestes Werk und beschreibt das sinnliche Erleben eines Fauns, als dieser aus einem nachmittäglichen Schlaf erwacht und das Geschehen des Morgens in einem rauschhaften Monolog Revue passieren lässt. Mallarmé griff mit seinem Gedicht den antiken Mythos von Pan und Syrinx auf, der in Dichtung und Malerei immer wieder dargestellt worden ist. Das Gedicht ist zum Ausgangspunkt für vielfältiges und bedeutendes künstlerisches Schaffen geworden. Allen voran hat es als Inspiration für Claude Debussys Musikstück Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune von 1894 und zusammen mit diesem für Vaslav Nijinskys Ballett L'Après-midi d'un faune von 1912 gedient. Alle drei Werke nehmen eine zentrale Stellung in ihrer jeweiligen Kunstgattung und in der Entwicklung der künstlerischen Moderne ein. Stéphane Mallarmé (* 18. März 1842 in Paris als Étienne Mallarmé; gestorben 9. September 1898 in Valvins, Gemeinde Vulaines-sur-Seine, Département Seine-et-Marne, nahe Fontainebleau) war ein französischer Schriftsteller. Seine Gedichte gelten als Hauptwerke des Symbolismus. Zusammen mit Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine und Arthur Rimbaud gilt er als einer der wichtigsten Wegbereiter der modernen Lyrik. Edwin Maria Landau (geboren 20. September 1904 in Koblenz; gestorben 2. Januar 2001 in Zürich) war ein deutsch-schweizerischer literarischer Übersetzer und Verleger. Landau übersetzte Werke von Pierre Corneille, Thomas Corneille, Jean Racine, Molière, Stéphane Mallarmé, Jean Cocteau, John Hersey und des Kardinals Jean Daniélou ins Deutsche. Von 1976 bis 1983 gab er die Werke Reinhold Schneiders heraus und war seit 1981 Präsident der Reinhold-Schneider-Gesellschaft. 1991 gab er mit Samuel Schmitt ein Buch mit Zeugenaussagen über die Internierungslager in Frankreich heraus, im Wesentlichen über Gurs und Les Milles. Maurice Barraud (* 20. Februar 1889 in Genf; gestorben 11. November 1954 ebenda) war ein Schweizer Maler. Neben der Malerei arbeitete Barraud auch stets mit grafischen Verfahren, insbesondere Lithografie und Kaltnadelradierung. So fertigte er zahlreiche Buchillustrationen an. 1937 wurden in der Nazi-Aktion "Entartete Kunst" aus der Städtischen Bildergalerie Wuppertal-Elberfeld ein Pastell Barrauds (ein Halbakt, 57,5 × 47,8 cm) beschlagnahmt und über die Luzerner Galerie Fischer 1939 für 820 SFr versteigert. Die aus der Städtischen Kunsthalle Mannheim ebenfalls beschlagnahmte Lithografie Femme à l'eventail ging an den Kunsthändler Karl Buchholz. Ihr Verbleib ist ungeklärt. Magnifique et rare édition du poème de Mallarmé paru en 1876, accompagné de 25 aquarelles originales et de 5 gravures en relief de Albert Ayme. Exemplaire n°18 sur 60. Edition aux dépens d'un amateur. In-folio, 72p sous couverture crème rempliée et imprimée du titre en sérigraphie, emboîtage d'éditeur (format H.420 x L. 445 mm) rouge illustré d'une composition de l'artiste signée. Excellent état. Papier très légèrement gondolé. Albert Ayme est un peintre et sculpteur français. Passé de la figuration à l'abstraction au cours des années 1960, il est un théoricien. Son uvre est empreinte des principes géométriques, mathématiques musicaux. Il réalise également des décors architecturaux et des illustrations de livres d'artistes. L'après-midi d'un faune est un « églogue », un poème de style classique consacré à un sujet pastoral. Il met en scène le monologue d'un faune évoquant la nature et les nymphes . Albert Ayme conçoit ici cette uvre comme la « traduction musicale du poème comme une partition ».

One of 88 copies for individual members of the Societe des Amis des Livres, this no. 29 printed for Mr. Rene Lavallette-Simon. 23 large erotic etchings (3 double page) around the text and one wood engraving on the front cover by Pierre-Yves Tremois, engraved by Raymond Haasen and Pierre Bouchet. Very large 4to., unbound as issued in the original pictorial wrappers with Tremois engraving in green on upper cover, housed in teh original green cloth backed chemise with printed paper covers spine. Slight rubbing to chemise spine but otherwise an extremely good copy. With the note to the binder inserted loose. Together with an additional 4 leaves with the first three bars of Debussy's L'Apres Midi printed in green and black and another large full page etching of the Faun by Tremois. Also with this copy are two large 4pp. menus for the Societe des Amis des Livres for March and November 1948, one at the Cercle Interallie and one at the Automobile Club in Paris, again printed in green and red. They each have an editioned signed etching by Tremois numbered 13 of 56 and 25 of 56 of an unused illustration for the book and an unused title page.
