Sono raccolti in questo terzo volume delle Opere gli scritti che nell'arco di cinquant'anni Jung ha dedicato alla natura, ai contenuti psicologici e alle possibilità terapeutiche delle malattie mentali, e più in particolare detta «dementia praecox», che Bleuler nel 1911 propose di chiamare «schizofrenia». Il lungo saggio Psicologia della dementia praecox (1907) contiene molti dei motivi essenziali della psichiatria moderna ed è stato lo scritto che segnalò le ricerche di Jung all'attenzione (e alle perplessità) della scienza ufficiale . Apprezzato anche da Freud, il saggio aprì tra i due un periodo di stretta collaborazione, anche se quella di Jung non fu mai un'adesione incondizionata al metodo psicoanalitico. Da questi scritti, osserva Luigi Aurigemma, nasce l'immagine di una psichiatria che esige una preparazione storica e una cultura vastissime e solidissime, che sole possono, spesso, permettere di penetrare nei segreti del delirio e di alleviare così il malato dal peso che essi comportano .
