This dated 1984 hardback edition is in VG condition, in VG dustjacket (unclipped). 448pp, signed and inscribed on title page by the author: "To Richard, with best wishes, from Eric Newby Sept 13 1984". Also, the book has an inscription in ink on the FFEP (not Newby). Jacket is lightly rubbed on edges, and slightly yellowed on spine. Internally clean, except for light foxing on free end paper, and also text bloxk edges. Pages have a slight wave. Otherwise all VG.

This author used several pseudonyms, and was known for fantasy and science fiction works. This book seems to be a straightforward report on the British army in 1914, which was in a state of flux. No evidence was found of the author's military service, and no synopses were located. No writing or damage, although endpapers are tanned. Presumed First Edition, since only one additional publisher was found (in the States) which is outnumbered about 5-1 as to number of copies located. 182 pp. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.

Issued simultaneously with the cloth edition, but considerably less common. An interesting glimpse at the Imperial Army on the eve of the Great War. J.W. Barnes Steveni was the long-time Russia correspondent for the London Daily Chronicle; he resided in St. Petersburg from the 1880s but returned to Great Britain soon after the collapse of the Romanov dynasty.
