Add to basketHard Back. Condition: Good. First Edition. Frontispiece + vi + 159 pages + 27 single sided pages ( 106 plates). Condition card hardback binding fair/good, some ageing/wear, some splitting at spine with an original printed label front, spine looks like leather, but is not. Contents mostly good, clean & tight, the odd foxing or minor mark, a few corner folds, one Text page 37/8 with edge wear/dirt/loss. This is the New and Improved Edition, We know some dealers and institutions date this as anywhere between 1815 to 1840 & most 1825. This copy is a little confusing but ties date down a bit as title page has publisher as Edward Lacey, 76, St. Paul's Church Yard, but front cover has Isaac Taylor Hinton, Warwick Square, now as Lacey used his address only between 1829 and 1848 & Hinton was at his only between 1827-1832, This was made between 1829 and 1832. Full page frontispiece illustration without any text + 106 drawings/plates on 27 pages, it lists only 105, but they list plate 24 twice, even listing both different plates at rear, both as xxiv, 4 plates/drawings to each page. As it was so popular in American, publishers there re-published it for at least another 15 years Size: 27.5 x 22cm. Aprox.

Add to basketLeather. Condition: Good. None Stated (illustrator). First edition. Two fascinating works on drawing bound as one. Two volumes bound in one. First edition of The Art of Drawing. Second edition of An Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of English Architecture. Collated, Rickman's Attempt to Discriminate appears to be missing a plate. Ferguson's The Art of Drawing is complete. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Antoinette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. These works come directly from the library of the Titley Court estate. Thomas Rickman was an architect and architectural antiquary who played a major role in the Gothic Revival. His Attempt to Discriminate the styles of English Architecture established the basic chronological classification and terminology still utilised when regarding English medieval ecclesiastical architecture. In a half calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Loss to head and tail of spine which is lifting slightly. Rubbing to extremities. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, E H Greenly. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Prior owner's signature to both title pages. Pages are bright, scattered spots throughout. Good. book.
