Cloth, 224 pages, color illustrations; 31 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the University of North Texas Art Gallery, Denton, TX, January 16 to February 25, 2003, the Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art, Portland ME June 10-October 12, 2003 and at Bates College in Lewsiton Maine from June to October 2004. Following is from the Bates exhibition description: Wenda Gu's work is timely in its ambitious attempt to address in artistic terms the issue of globalism that dominates discussions of contemporary economics, society, and culture. The enormous scope of his vision conceiving of his artwork as existing over time and space and not constrained by convention, language or national boundaries is remarkable. He collapses the ancient into the future, going back to time honored traditional methods. At the same time, his installations present work in unexpected forms. Words, languages, human hair, glue, calligraphy, and stone carving are just some of the components of his installations that catalyze discussion and broaden awareness among viewers. The exhibition consists of two original installations, two smaller existing installations, a performance, and the first major scholarly publication on the artist. Firm binding, minrio shelf wear at forecorners and tail of spine. clean inside copy. Near Fine DJ. Oversized, heavy. Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. "Art From Middle Kingdom to Biological Millennium is the first comprehensive academic study of Wenda Gu. It includes contributions by Dr. Gao Minglu and Dr. Gan Zu who both began their curatorial and art historical careers in China writing extensively on Wenda Gu, and the new Chinese avant-garde. The book also includes an interview with the artist by Dr. David Cateforis, which places Gu's work in historical perspective, and newly published writings by Wenda Gu illuminating the conceptual and practical foundation for his art. One section of plates chronicles the internationally renowned united nations series and another presents new work." - Publisher. Edited by Mark H.C. Bessire. Size: 4to. Print. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Various artists (illustrator). Limited/Numbered Signed Edition. Seven art prints from blocks and plates, some with letterpress text over-printed on the image. All are from Round House Press, the imprint of the collegiate printing lab of Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY. Quotation about war, by Dalton Trumbo, noted screenwriter who was blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. From Dalton's Johnny Got His Gun, written in 1939: "To fight that war they would need men and if men saw the future they wouldn't fight. So they were masking the future they were keeping the future a soft quiet secret. They knew that if all the little guys saw the future they would begin to ask questions. They would ask questions and they would find answers." 9" x 7". White, mould-made paper without watermark, edges untrimmed. Text in a serif font on graphic background depicting a swatch of fabric. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Gift inscribed by Donal Kuspit to Susan Shatter ( first names only) on title page. Few art critics in Western history have had the lasting international impact of philosopher and psychoanalyst Donald Kuspit. A student of Theodor Adorno, Kuspit introduced in the 1970s a new type of philosophical art criticism drawing on critical theory, phenomenology, and psychoanalysis. This multifaceted art criticism has gained world renown for reasons that critics, art historians, and philosophers from around the world explain here. The first book about one of the most distinguished art critics in history, Dialectical Conversions surveys Kuspit's role in triggering several historic shifts within art criticism. About the Author David Craven is Distinguished Professor of Art History at the University of New Mexico. Brian Winkenweder is associate professor of art history at Linfield College in Oregon. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Fernando Gallego (illustrator). 1st Edition. Fernando Gallego (1440 - 1507) was a Spanish painter whose art took much from the Flemish style predominate at that time. He can be considered as painting in a Hispano-Flemish style. This book, "Fernando Gallego and the Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo" was written by Robert M. Quinn and published by the University of Arizona Press in 1961. The text is accompanied by a Spanish translation by Renato Rosaldo. There is one magnificent full-page color plate (the frontispiece) and numerous full-page monochrome plates. As well there are vignette close-ups through the text presenting details of various pieces. "The Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo" depicts in numerous paintings the life of Christ, as well as various other symbolic episodes from the Bible. The entire work is a remarkably beautiful tableau. Mr. Quinn places Gallego within the proper artistic and historical milieu, and analyses each painting within the tableau, explaining the symbolism contained in each picture. The book is a fascinating and beautiful scholarly work examining an artistic masterpiece by an artist who is, possibly, not known to a majority of modern Americans. This is the First Edition and has a signed inscription in ink by the author on the title page. TITLE : Fernando Gallego and the Retablo of Ciudad Rodrego AUTHOR : Robert M. Small markings and stamp on front end page, else unmarked. viii, 378 pages, plates : illustrations, 29 cm. "Seymour Slive (1920-2014) an honorary member of HNA, was the first art historian trained in the United States who specialized in seventeenth-century Dutch art. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Chicago, where he studied with the scholar of Italian sculpture Ulrich Middeldorf. His dissertation, written long before anyone put together the words 'reception' and 'history,' examined Rembrandt's critical reputation from his lifetime through the early eighteenth century. It was published in 1953 as Rembrandt and His Critics, 1630-1730. Slive remained engaged with Rembrandt for the rest of his life. One of his last publications, a study of Rembrandt's drawings organized by subject, as they were classified in the 1656 inventory of the artistâs possessions, appeared in 2009. Never one to shy away from studying the major figures in the field, in addition to pursuing his interest in Rembrandt Slive was the leading authority on Frans Hals and Jacob van Ruisdael. As early as 1962 he wrote the catalogue entries for a Hals exhibition in Haarlem." - HISTORIANS OF NETHERLANDISH ART.
