kart. Condition: Gut. 96 Seiten Very good copy, cover with small signs of wear. - HE ART ON A STRING PROJECT IS AN EXCITING AND IMPORTANT ONE FOR OBJECT-AUSTRALIAN CENTRE FOR CRAFT and Design. This publication and the travelling exhibition of the same name break new ground in the research and promotion of contemporary Aboriginal art, craft and design practice. The threaded and beaded objects, which have been so beautifully photographed for this catalogue, speak elegantly and powerfully for themselves and their makers. Object's core mission is to significantly increase the visibility and viability of contemporary craft and design in Australia. We hope that the Art on a String project leads to an increased appreciation of the beauty and importance of this work and also to an improved position in the marketplace for it. I would like to congratulate the curators, Louise Hamby and Diana Young, on their tireless research and their thoughtful selection of extraordinary necklaces, bracelets, curtains and other objects made by Indigenous artists from the Central Desert and Arnhem Land. Louise and Diana's commitment, tenacity and hard work have enabled us to produce an outstanding exhibition and accompanying publication. When they approached us at the end of 1999 with the outline of this project, they had already undertaken extensive fieldwork research and had spent months developing and refining the ideas. The project seemed well suited to our aims and from early in 2000 they worked with Associate Director, Brian Parkes and other key staff from our Exhibitions and Publications programs. The result is one we are all very proud of. Art on a String has provided Object with an opportunity to work with a number of diverse and dynamic organisations throughout Australia including Aboriginal art centres in the Central Desert and in Arnhem Land and all of the galleries and museums who will be presenting the exhibition. One of the most important and rewarding relationships has been our collaboration with the Australian National University's Centre for Cross- Cultural Research, with whom we have co-published this catalogue. The CCR's assistance has been crucial and we would like to especially thank Howard Morphy and Julie Gorrell for their support. We are grateful also, for the support of Visions of Australia from whom we received a grant for the development of the exhibition and its national tour.
