This is an original political cartoon by Arthur Moreland probably for The Morning Leader newspaper relating to a notable fraud trial in 1911, Captioned on paper attached to left edge, reading, Cartoon of the Day, The Young Lady and the Old Man, The Difference between Pearls and Potatoes, Mrs. Cameron who was convicted in June and sentence to 3 years penal solitude for fraud in connection with a pearl necklace valued at £6.500, has been released on account of her state of health. This week at Chichester, an old labourer was sent to gaol for 10 days with hard labour without the option of a fine for stealing six potatoes. This relates to Major Cecil Aylmer Cameron CBE, DSO and his wife who were at the centre of a notable fraud trial in 1911. In 1911 he and his wife Ruby were convicted of fraud in Edinburgh and sentenced to three years' imprisonment for attempting to defraud Lloyd's by claiming £6,500 for the theft of Mrs Cameron's pearl necklace, which had not actually been stolen. He refused to give evidence in his defence and served the full sentence. Following his release, a petition for a pardon was signed by, among others, five dukes, twenty privy councillors, and 126 generals. During her imprisonment, his wife had confessed that she alone was the guilty party and Cameron had only been protecting her. He received a full pardon and was restored to his rank of Lieutenant. He served as a staff officer in France during the First World War, during which time he was mentioned in dispatches four times and awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). Under the codename EVELYN, Cameron was the handler of the La Dame Blanche spy ring in German-occupied France and Belgium from stations at Folkestone in England, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Montreuil in France. In 1918 he was transferred to the War Office in London, but as a fluent Russian-speaker was soon afterwards appointed Chief Intelligence Officer with the British Military Mission to Siberia during the Russian Civil War, for which he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Siberian War Honours of January 1920. In 1920 he returned to the War Office as a General Staff Officer in the Military Operations Directorate and also served during the Irish War of Independence. Cameron, aged 40, was found shot dead at Hillsborough Barracks in Sheffield in 1924 The artwork is on a piece of art card measuring 10.5 inches by 10 inches approx. Some dustiness and marking to edges else in good condition. this is a lighter item, overseas shipping costs will be reduced accordingly at checkout where possible. Signed by Author(s).

Gounod. 1873'); spine and corners renewed in calf.Ten of Gounod's London-published songs, specially bound for presentation, all signed and inscribed in pencil on the upper wrapper to the English actor Arthur Cecil: 'To my friend Arthur C. Blunt. Ch, Gounod'. The songs, of which eight are in English, one in French, and one in Italian, all date from the years 187074 when Gounod lived in England, residing for three of those years in the home of Harry and Georgina Weldon (18371914) in Tavistock Square, London. Three of the songs here are dedicated to Mrs Weldon, two others are described as 'sung by Mrs Weldon', and one is dedicated to her husband. Gounod's relationship with Georgina Weldon later soured: following his return to Paris, she refused to have his personal belongings sent to him and sued him repeatedly for libel. Arthur Cecil Blunt (stage name Arthur Cecil, 18431896) was an actor, comedian, playwright, and theatre manager, and a friend of both Gilbert and Sullivan. He appeared in numerous comedies, farces, operettas and burlesques, and was particularly active during the years of Gounod's London stay. He was also acquainted with the Weldons and came for dinner on31July 1871, accompanying Gounod to Charing Cross Station afterwards.
