First edition. Later gilt-stamped cloth-backed marbled boards. Small printed label and pencilled library mark to half-title, rubber-stamp of the 'Ecole St Joseph, Sarlat' to half-title and title-page; a very few spots of foxing, else a very good copy. In The Personal Library of James Joyce: a descriptive bibliography, Thomas Connolly noted that Joyce's copy of this work was 'the most heavily marked of all the books in the Joyce library and obviously should be the subject of an independent study. The book is composed of 497 cases involving marital problems which range from betrothal to incest.' To show Joyce's use of the book (the only one to be illustrated in the bibliography), Connolly provided plates of four of the marked pages and accompanying translations into English.…
