Inscribed by the author inside the front cover. Inscription reads This book is proudly presented to Hank Seiden who now stands on the threshold of advertising success and achievement. May this little volume inspire him on that steep upward path. Sincerely William Sunners. William Sunners (1904-1988) was an American writer. Mr. Sunners quit his job as a New York City high school teacher because he had earned more writing jingles and devoted his time to jingles, contests and books. He wrote over 100 books on how to win prizes in contests. In the 1930s and 1940s he won several prizes in puzzle contests, including three automobiles. He published a best-selling book titled How to Win Prize Contests. Sunners was an occasional contributor to Word Ways: The Journal of Recreational Linguistics. William Sunners' claim to fame was his 1983 appearance on Late Night With David Letterman. Hank Seiden (1928-2008) became a giant in the field of advertising. He was national promotion manager, New York Post Corporation, 1951-1953; Vice president, creative director, Keyes, Madden & Jones, President, Hicks & Greist, Inc., New York City, since 1986; Chief Executive Officer, Ketchum/Hicks & Greist Inc., Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, The Seiden Group, Inc. Consultant marketing department Ohio State University. Consultant to president New York City City Council, 1972-1973. Consultant Postmaster General United States, 1972-1974. This work serves a two-fold purpose. It enables the advertising agency to determine whether a slogan it has created for a client is already in existence and is being used by another firm. This will prevent embarrassment and the legal woes that result from duplication. The provisions of the Lanham Act not permit slogans to be registered with the United States Patent Office. This work serves a yet greater purpose. For decades, copywriters have longed for a single volume that would enable them to find ideas and suggestions in its pages. When the copywriter's pen refuses to touch the blank sheet before him or her because of absence of ideas, when thoughts refuse to assume definite form and shape, when words stubbornly fail to flow, this volume will start the mental processes working. It will supply the ideas needs for copy on every conceivable subject. It will prod and prompt the harried writer to create the words, sentences, and paragraphs for which the clients clamor. The Lanham (Trademark) Act (Public Law (United States) 79-489, 60 Stat. 427, enacted July 5, 1946, codified at 15 U.S.C. § 1051 et seq. (15 U.S.C. ch. 22) is the primary federal trademark statute in the United States. In other words, the Act is the primary statutory foundation of United States trademark law at the federal level. The Act prohibits a number of activities, including trademark infringement, trademark dilution, and false advertising. The Act has been amended several times since its enactment. Its impact was significantly enhanced by the Trademark Counterfeiting Act of 1984, which made the intentional use of a counterfeit trademark or the unauthorized use of a counterfeit trademark an offense under Title 18 of the United States Code, and enhanced enforcement remedies through the use of ex parte seizures and the award of treble profits or damages (whichever is greater).

An amusing and entertaining letter from a man destined for 'une triste vie et une triste ministère' (see his entry in the Oxford DNB). 3pp, 16mo. Bifolium. Thirty-seven lines of text, neatly and closely written. In fair condition, worn and grubby. Folded twice for postage. Signed 'Fred: W: Robertson'. Begins: 'My dear Miss Smith / Could you but see the piles of books & papers that are as yet only partially disinterred from their temporary coffins you would conceive my dismay and despair at your question. I will become a disciple of Comte to please you. Nay - even believe in Mesmerism to appease your Sister - provided it implies merely the profoundest conviction of her magnetic powers - only do not press this terrible demand.' He asks her to assure her 'clerical friend' that 'Monsieur Comte is an atheist - & that Dr. M's niece has demonstrated Mesmerism to be Satanic'. Once he has got his 'things in order', he will do his best to 'assist you in your atheistical & your Sister in her demonological investigations, by sending you the treatises on those interesting subjects which are missing'. In the meantime he throws himself upon the 'well-known clemency of the celestial sex'.

The man was a Wall Street banker who?became president of the North American Trust and Banking Company.Started by Joseph D. Beers after he came to New York in 1815, J.D. Beers &_Co. was a Wall Street banking and brokerage firm with offices on Wall Street. Beers formally retired from the firm in 1835, but stayed active until his death twenty-eight years later, principally concerning himself with land speculation and stock investments. Shortly after his retirement, Beers planned a trip to England to consider investments there."Mr. Beers is a gentleman of the highest respectability and is very favorably known in the commercial and banking affairs of his country as a capitalist whose extensive means have been safely and usefully employed."Somewhat anomalously, banker Beers was a staunch friend of populist President Jackson. For his trip, Jackson provided him with an introduction to the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, Aaron Vail. Letter Signed as President, Washington, February 12, 1836, to Vail. ?Allow me to present to your acquaintance J.D. Beers Esq. of the city of New York who is about to visit Europe. Mr. Beers is a gentleman of the highest respectability and is very favorably known in the commercial and banking affairs of his country as a capitalist whose extensive means have been safely and usefully employed. I solicit for him your kind attentions and have the honor to remain.Andrew Jackson.? After returning to the United States, Beers became president of the North American Trust and Banking Company. This may be the earliest use of the term ?capitalist? by a president, at least in its modern sense, and if it is not, it must be close to it. Extensive research has failed to disclose any other prior use. It is of the greatest interest that Jackson, renowned as foe of the privileged and powerful, ?was not opposed to banking tycoons gathering ?extensive means.?
Keller went on to invent the first successful and reliable coin-op phonograph (jukebox) in the United StatesA very uncommon letter concerning Edison?s first phonograph factoryAlbert Keller was the assistant to Ezra Gilliland, Edison's best friend, and the two of them joined Edison at his New York and later lamp factory labs in 1885-1887. After Edison began to develop his wax-cylinder phonograph in 1887, Gilliland and Keller set up a factory to manufacture them with Keller as the superintendent. Gilliland became general agent for the phonograph. Gilliland and Edison's personal attorney, John Tomlinson, then arranged a deal with Jesse Lippincott to purchase the rights to Edison's phonograph. In the meantime, Edison set up a separate factory for manufacturing phonographs next to his West Orange Lab. Believing that the side deal that Gilliland and Tomlinson negotiated with Lippincott for Gilliland's agency rights was done behind his back, Edison cut off all relations and sued Gilliland & Tomlinson. The earlier factory was still being managed by Keller, who had also begun to develop on his own a version of what became known as the nickel-in-slot phonograph, an early jukebox. Edison was unwilling to continue to entrust the entire factory to Keller, who was after all Gilliland?s protege, but valued his experimental talents so was not ready to simply fire him. This was his solution. Autograph letter signed, from the Edison phonograph factory, March 5, 1889, to Keller, relieving him of his duties as factory manager, but offering an opportunity to remain on the Edison team. ?My opinion is that you were never intended by the Almighty to run a large machine shop. Hence after Monday next you will cease to be superintendent of the phonograph factory. If you want to come back with me experimenting, will give you $30 per week and I advise you to accept. Edison.? It?s interesting to see the tactic Edison used with Keller, not even mentioning that the Gilliland and Tomlinson matter had even played a part in his decision. We obtained this letter directly from the Keller descendants, and it has never before been offered for sale. The letter is affixed to a light backing.By the end of 1889, Keller jumped ship and joined Gilliland, and they along with several other people worked independently on nickel-in-slot phonographs, leading to the creation of the Automatic Phonograph Exhibition Company in 1890 that tried to bring together the various patents. Keller continued his work, and the first really successful and reliable coin-op phonograph (jukebox) in the United States was developed and patented by Keller in 1891.The Edison Papers tell us that trying to figure out what was going on with Keller and the factory, and the development of the nickel-in-slot phonograph, is not easy because so little material about it has survived. They found this letter enlightening and ?very interesting?.
