Add to basketFirst edition of this guide for incoming British immigrants joining the gold rush, with chapters on farming techniques, the quality of the soil, the lives of the aboriginal people and mainly where and how to mine for gold. Francis Lancelott (1816-1899) published this guide a year after the first confirmed discovery of gold in Australia to help assist the thousands of migrants joining the gold rush. He worked as a mineralogical surveyor in Australia and therefore could provide the flocking thousands information on the range of gold fields, the yield and various methods on how to work for gold. He also took advice and knowledge from local farmers, the proprietor of the Adelaide Times and many more individuals "I have not permission to mention" (preface) to create a comprehensive handbook on how to live in a vastly different climate from Britain. He even went as far as analysing the health of five British migrants to conclude that moving to Australia in the "heyday of life" (p. 170) will remove a decade from your life expectancy, but moving once you have "passed the median of life" (p. 170) will have the inverse effect. Two vols, octavo. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard to Vol I., frontispiece plan of Summer Hills to Vol II., 16 pp. of advertisements to the rear of both vols. Original brown beaded cloth, spine lettered in gilt and decorated in blind, front covers panelled and decorated in blind, pale yellow coated endpapers, top edge untrimmed, other trimmed. Cloth with minor marks, spines sunned, spine ends and tips bumped. A very good copy.
