Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. "This innovative study, by one of the most progressive political theorists of his generation, challenges the traditional ways of constructing and celebrating the corpus of political theory. Shapiro explores modernity via a reading of Adam Smith, confronting his philosophy and focusing on what he calls `the Smith effect', the dimensions of which are integral to modern capitalist political economy and the construction of the social, political and moral within that system. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1987). 1987 1st edition. 8vo (140 x 222mm). Pp205. B/w illustrations by Judy Whittlestone and the author, maps. Green boards, spine titled in silver-gilt. Slightly bumped and browned. Good-plus in used dust-wrapper. Memories of coarse and flyfishing in Derbyshire. "As a boy he fished the canals and ponds around Stanton-by-Dale, usually with bread as bait, and he can still recall the thrill of his first catch, a gudgeon weighing all of three ounces. In adulthood he learned to use a fly rod and would spend his weekends, with his friends Arnie, Syd and George, wooing the brown trout in the river Derwent, revelling in the closely fought contests between fish and man. Vividly he recreates an idyllic world of flowing water, lush meadows and reed-fringed banks; of water voles cavorting in quiet pools, the contented calls of moorhen and mallard and, above all, the magic of water ringed with trout rising to the fly in the dusk of a summer evening." .

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This massive biography, "Hardy", by Martin Seymour-Smith, is an exhaustive study of the life of Novelist - poet Thomas Hardy, published in hardcover format by Bloomsbury. This is the 1994 First Edition. The book, which is handsomely illustrated with halftone photographs, printed on calendered paper, and collected in two discrete sections, is as complete a biography as one could possibly want, following Hardy from youth on to old age, and focusing, not only on his published works, but his personal life, marriage, and affairs. The following is excerpted from the jacket write-up : "Seymour-Smith has researched his subject from every conceivable angle, and his arguments are forceful indeed. A strong feature of his narrative is his candid weighing-up of the evidence, whereby the reader actually becomes involved in the analytical process rather than remaining merely the passive recipient of informed opinion. The animated of Hardy's work is both detailed and scholarly, yet is rendered hugely and delightfully accessible by Seymour-Smith's consistent relating of it to every aspect of Hardy's personal life. "Hardy's sexuality and relationships come under the closest possible scrutiny, as do the affairs Hardy is supposed to have had. here Seymour-Smith's persuasive powers are especially engaging, as he neither endorses nor refutes the 'traditional Evidence'. Long overdue, this radical reappraisal of Thomas Hardy is destined not only to be the definitive biography, but also to restore Hardy to his rightful place as the greatest and most versatile English author after Shakespeare." Whether or not one agrees with this pronouncement, needless to say, any person - scholar or interested reader - must find this book engrossing and completely necessary for scholarship on Hardy, or for a more complete understanding of this great man of letters. The book is now, amazingly, Out of Print - OP. TITLE : Hardy AUTHOR : Martin Seymour-Smith (Martin Roger Seymour-Smith, 1928 - 1998) IMPRINT : Bloomsbury Publishing Ltd. Hardcover. 74p., hardbound first edition in yellow cloth boards and dust jacket, presswork by a London firm. An unfortunate copy that must have been left outdoors on a misty day, with warping of (the still-bright) boards and a distressing of the dj. Well, it's dry now, and it can be handled with no adhesions, though it has picked up a little grime. The front free endpaper is inscribed and signed twice, once in full. Note that the "bibliography" is simply a hand-list, the Ray Smith a one-page encomium.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. 1st printing of the first hardcover edition SIGNED by contributor Neil Smith at his section. For many years, on an annual basis, Oberon published several stories by sets of three promising young writers in its Coming Attractions series. Early work by Rohinton Mistry, Wayne Johnston, David Adams Richards and W.P. Kinsella was included in the series. The hardcover edition was produced in an edition of, perhaps, a few hundred, with most going to libraries. This example collects earlier versions of three stories by Neil Smith, each of which would appear in his first book, published three years later, Bang Crunch. Smith was one of Knopf Canada's "New Faces of Fiction" that year. A signed and dated Canadian first of Bang Crunch is also available from this bookseller. Bound in green cloth, this copy is square and tight with sharp corners, and the jacket is bright, crisp and not priced, as issued. Canadian orders will be charged GST. Signed by Author(s).
