Add to basketPatric Dickinson has not received his due. A self-styled 'poet and impresario of poetry', Dickinson occupied a central position in the cultural landscape of post-war Britain. As an editor and broadcaster he worked with poets such as Dylan Thomas, Cecil Day Lewis and Roy Campbell, actresses Flora Robson, Peggy Ashcroft and Jill Balcon, and actors Robert Donat, Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud. See John Mole's obituary in the Independent, 31 January 1994. From the papers of Dickinson's mistress Sarah Emmeline Hamilton. (His extraordinary correspondence with her, including 171 original and mostly-unpublished poems, 474 autograph letters and 349 post cards, is offered separately). The present item is a mockup by 'Sarah Hamilton & Partners' for the dustwrapper of PD's 1965 autobiography 'The Good Minute'. The proposed design is printed in black and grey halftones, with the title printed over the top in red. In fair condition, aged, worn and speckled with rust spots. A somewhat avant-garde design, with the whole page covered by a collage of images, including a photo of PD, a grand clock with figures, hands reaching out of the margins, a large painting of Japanese-style foliage. On the reverse PD writes: 'So much love my darling / Here's a little new poem for you. / Forgiveness / Forgive me. I do know / For what in particular / But I know this. / There's always room for it, & Times / One must need to know & know / Like aout snow or the evening star / What forgiveness is. / There's nothing personal (I expect it's them pills) It just welled up. / O how I long to be with you. I hope I may have rung you before you get this. / All my love & specially now / I do so love you / P / Ive got some more of these covers if you'd like them'. As it happens Gollancz stuck with their usual sort of yellow dustwrapper printed in black when printing PD's book. See Image.

Greening, Binder 183 Fleet Street. Front hinge starting to crack and some foxing of rear flyleaf and margins; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 2 engraved portrait frontispieces. Updated and expanded edition (first published 1849) of the Autobiography of the abolitionist, Rev. Josiah Henson (1789-1883). Born a Maryland slave, he escaped to Canada in 1830 and made his home in Dresden, Ontario for the rest of his life. Following the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-96) in 1852, it was claimed that Henson was the real life original of the character of Uncle Tom, but this is disputed, as Stowe used a number of slave lives as a source. Edited by John Lobb (1840-1921), Managing Editor of the Christian Age, the publishers.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good dj. 2nd printing. [a good sound copy, moderately shelfworn with some exposure of boards at lower corners and along top edge of rear cover; the jacket has some paper loss at both ends of the spine, extending a bit into the top of the rear panel, otherwise just lightly edgeworn]. Includes a typed and SIGNED note from the author, affixed to the front endpaper. An early work by this Slovenian-American author, who went on to write numerous books, many of which celebrated the ethnic diversity of his adopted country. Jacket-blurbed as "perhaps for the first time an unsweetened picture of what the immigrant in this country has to cope with," the book reflects Adamic's vision of America as "a great and fascinating jungle of chaotic economic, social, intellectual, and spiritual forces which drive people to various forms of success and destroy most of them in the process," but in which he also finds "much that is essentially amusing or ridiculous." (An assessment that seems just as valid today as it was in 1932.) In the typed note, written to noted Civil War historian Arnold F. Gates, Adamic says he will try to read a "long script" that Gates had apparently given him, "but can't promise [because] I'm *inhumanly* busy." (Gates's ownership signature is on the front pastedown.) NOTE that the book itself is not signed by Adamic. ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience."
