ABOUT: Engelbert Humperdinck's autobiography traces his journey from humble, often difficult beginnings to becoming one of the world's most recognizable romantic vocalists. Born Arnold George Dorsey in India and raised in England, he struggled for years to break into show business. Early attempts under the name Gerry Dorsey failed, and a severe bout of tuberculosis nearly ended his career before it began. His fortunes changed when a new manager insisted he adopt the stage name Engelbert Humperdinck, giving him a second chance at fame. His breakthrough came with a performance on Sunday Night at the London Palladium, which launched him into international stardom. From there, he shared stages and friendships with icons such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Sammy Davis Jr. The book is candid about the temptations and excesses that accompanied global success. Humperdinck openly discusses his infidelities, his long struggle with alcohol, and the pressures of fame. Despite these challenges, he emphasizes the stabilizing presence of his wife Patricia, to whom he remained married throughout his career, even amid personal turmoil. Humperdinck also recounts the extravagant trappings of his success?Hollywood homes, luxury cars, and the surreal experience of becoming the "King of Romance," a title reinforced by his massive record sales and chart achievements, including a Guinness?recognized 56?week chart run for "Release Me.". INSCRIBED on the half title "To his mother - Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesan - October 16th 1933." The inscription directly echos the printed dedication ( 'To the Anna, who is my mother.' ) and Wright's lifelong symbolic tributes to Anna (who died in 1923). His mother Anna played a profound, almost mythic role in shaping his life and career. 'Before he was born, she said she intended him to be an architect' (from the book's 'Family' section) and famously gave him the 'Froebel Gifts' with their emphasis on basic geometric shapes, which Wright credited with awakening the foundations of his design philosophy. Octavo; [vi], 371pp plus 22pp of photographs at rear. Good to Very Good condition (pencilled initials to ffep, light wear and soiling, lower spine frayed) in tan linen cloth over thin flexible boards titled in black and red. The book, signed at the height of the Taliesan Fellowship's first years, captures the exact intersection of his writing, his mother's memory (and influence), and the communal energy of the early years of Taliesan - just as he prepared for the Fellowship's first major winter "trek" to temporary quarters in Arizona (departure late November 1933). A true FLW rarity. Second Printing of the 1932 First Edition. Signed.
