Eigner, a significant figure of the Black Mountain School, became an important influence on one of the next major avant-garde movements in American poetry: the Language Poets. Th…ese younger poets championed his work in the 1970s, seeing it as the progenitor of their own formal experiments. Indeed, Ron Silliman felt that it was Eigner who truly advanced Olson's poetics, moving past "speech-based projectivist" poetry and toward a "thinking" poetics, which laid the foundation for Language Poetry's development.
