Répondant au défi de Lénine pour qui le théâtre devait être " plus qu'un simple spectacle ", les auteurs, les metteurs en scène et les scénographes s'essayèrent à toutes les formes du genre, du théâtre de rue au théâtre de studio, du futurisme déclamatoire au drame domestique, de la propagande avouée aux subtilités psychologiques, provoquant une révolution esthétique sans précédent, qui étonne aujourd'hui encore par l'ampleur de sa vision et une pertinence intacte. Konstantin Rudnitski, l'auteur de cet ouvrage, historien du théâtre et critique mondialement reconnu, vécut lui-même au c ur de ce mouvement artistique et noua des liens personnels avec un grand nombre de ses protagonistes. Il retrace dans ce livre l'extraordinaire effervescence intellectuelle du théâtre russe puis soviétique, des premières années du XXe siècle jusqu'à 1935.
