Add to basketCondition: Very Good +. Jacket Condition: Very Good -. 1st UK Edition, 1st Printing. 12.5 x 18.5 cm red boards with black titles to the spine xii 474pp. In original unclipped jacket designed by Iris Weller priced at 10s 6d net. The boards are bright and unfaded with just the tiniest bruises to 3 of the 4 corners. Internally clean, without name, inscription or bookplate and just a small ink spot on the contents page a hint of toning and spotting to the very edge of the text block. The dust jacket is bright and unfaded with a little toning to the rear panel. There are splits to the top fore edges of both front and back panels measuring 1-2cm. There is a triangular chip of 2cm from the upper joint extending a little onto both the front panel and spine with a tear extending from it 3 cm down the spine. The split on the rear joint extends 4cm onto the rear panel and 2 cm onto the spine. Despite these tears the book presents surprisingly well in its clear, removable, protective cover [not shown] Spock's Baby and Child Care was first printed in the USA in 1946. It went on to become one of the best-selling books of the 20th century and revolutionised the upbringing of children with a more child centric ethos and its advice to parents that; "You know more than you think you do". This scarce 1st UK edition in its even scarcer dust jacket has a number of differences from the US edition with changes in language "nappie" for "daiper" etc. together with an editor's note at the front referring to medical entitlements under the relatively new National Health Service and the extra rations available to pregnant women and new mothers (although rationing officially ended in July 1954). In all, a lovely copy of this groundbreaking book. Rainford & Parris Books welcomes enquiries, so please do not hesitate to ask if you require further images or have any questions. All books are packaged with great care.
