Dezember 1923 in Washington, D.C.; 9. Februar 2013 in Albany, New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Objektkünstler, Maler, Grafiker und Bildhauer. Er gehörte zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der Minimal Art. . Artschwager entwarf seit 1962 eigene möbelähnliche Gebilde, deren skulpturale Autonomie jedoch immer, auf den zweiten Blick, deutlich erkennbar bleibt. Über viele Zeichnungen entwickelte er Schritt für Schritt kubische Formen. Eine einfache Würfelform furnierte er mit verschiedenfarbigem Resopal oder Holzimitaten, quadratische Flächen und mehrere Dreiecke deuten imaginäre Funktionen an. Seine seit Mitte der 1960er Jahre entstandenen Bilder malte er auf Celotex, einer festen Faserplatte aus Zuckerrohrabfällen mit Mineralfasern, dessen Rückseite er als Malgrund nutzte. Seine Bildmotive entnahm er anfangs den Immobilienanzeigen der Zeitungen. Später kamen andere banale Motive hinzu, zwei auch mit pornografischem Inhalt. Artschwager vergrößerte die vorgefundenen Motive um ein Vielfaches und übertrug sie auf die raue Oberfläche der Hartfaserplatten. Durch seine in Grisailletechnik ausgeführte Ölmalerei vermittelte er den Eindruck einer vergrößerten und aufgerasterten Fotografie. Diese dem amerikanischen Hyper-Realismus nahestehende Vorgehensweise blendete jegliche Subjektivität aus. (Kasper König) Arbeiten von Richard Artschwager waren zwischen 1968 und 1992 auf der 4. documenta, der documenta 5, der documenta 7, der documenta 8 und der documenta 9 in Kassel vertreten. (wiki) // Dieses Umfeld kann auch die Oberfläche sein, auf die Artschwager gezeichnet hat, wie etwa bei der Tuschzeichnung "Table" (1977), für die er gerade, schmucklose Linien verwendet, um einen Tisch darzustellen, und zwar auf Laminat, das Holzmaserung imitiert. Er hat also buchstäblich das Bild eines Tisches auf ein Bild von Holz gezeichnet. Die Zeichnung funktioniert aufgrund der Interaktion zwischen der Abbildung und dem Holzimitat. Es ist unvorstellbar, die ziemlich banale Abbildung von der Holzumgebung zu lösen. Jedes der beiden lebt von seiner Beziehung zum anderen, und das Resultat ist eine perfekte Symbiose. Auf einer neueren Kohlezeichnung, "Un-titled", 1998 (Abb. S. 31) bildet der Künstler Kartoffeln ab, die auf einem geneigten Brett liegen. Wir wissen zwar, wo die Kartoffeln sind, aber nicht, wo sich das Brett befindet. Die Kartoffeln sind gegen die Bildfläche gepresst und scheinen uns gleich in die Hand oder in den Schoß zu fallen. Diese Möglichkeit wird zum einen durch die Schräge des Bretts, zum anderen auch durch die Abwesenheit eines Umfelds betont. Deshalb auch wirken die Kartoffeln plötzlich wie Felsbrocken, fast bedrohlich. Das macht Artschwagers Zeichnungen so fesselnd: Nichts ist das, was es zu sein scheint. Erscheinungen, so entdecken wir in diesen Zeichnungen, sind so unmittelbar wie täuschend. Wir fühlen uns nicht sicher, wenn wir nicht wissen, wo alles ist und dass es geschützt ist. Artschwager gönnt uns diese Beruhigung selten, wenn überhaupt. Auf der Kohlezeichnung "Un-titled" (Pastoral) von 1999 (Abb. S. 29) ragt etwas direkt vor uns auf. Ist es ein Gebirgszug, ein großer Felsen oder ein Tuch, das über etwas geworfen worden ist? Die Topographie wirkt zugleich vertraut und äußerst fremd. Ein schwar-zer Himmel ohne Mond und Sterne, nichts verrät uns, wo wir sind und ob wir überhaupt stehen -wir könnten auch liegen oder schweben. Smith (b. 1938), bound by the artist and printed offset in a numbered edition of 200, signed by the artist on the colophon page. Like Book 107, the intricate structure of overlapping text on each leaf requires repeated manipulation of the book and the pages. Smith writes in his auto-bibliography 200 Books (2000), "[The] text is a poem written for my dying mother. I completed the poem and placed a unique binding on it in time for one of my final drives back and forth to visit her in the hospital, 500 miles from Rochester to Fort Wayne. It was a joy to see her beam that a book had been written just for her." In fine condition, Smith's works are now very rare on the market. ?
