Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Penguin Music Magazine # II, May 1947. In 1946 Penguin Books issued the First Issue of the "Penguin Music Magazine, a paperback-sized periodical with a healthy selection of articles and pictures about things musical, including operas, ballet, jazz, theater and classical composing. These early issues were edited by Ralph Hill. This is Issue 2, released in May, 1947. There is a nice selection of contemporary halftone, black-and-white photographs arranged in two discrete section. The first photo section is a pictorial essay on opera, theatre and classical orchestras, as well as a few pictures of celebrities. Featured in the first photo portfolio are Britten's "The Rape of Lucretia" (Nancy Evans, Lesley Duff, Catherine Lawson, Peter Pears, Joan Cross, Frederick Sharp, Otakar Kraus, Owen Brannigan). Secondly Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" (Featuring Mariano Stabile, Alda Noni, Andrew MacPherson, Martin Lawrence). Thirdly is "La Boheme" by Puccini (Featuring Tony Sympson, Dorothy Vernon, Daria Bayan, Lester Ferguson). Other photographs show Margherita Carosio, Luigi Infantino, Onelia Fineschi, Constant Lambert (at the zoo), Vaughan Williams (conducting), and studio portraits of William Primrose and Josephine Strey. The second photo section is given over to ballet and theatre dance, as well as a healthy section of photos depicting the process of televising ballet. Featured are "Ballet in one Act" by Mary and Michael Kidd (which introduced spoken dialogue); next "Fancy Free' wherein Jerome Robbins presents the adventures of three dancing sailors and the music of Leonard Bernstein; also shown are "Tally-Ho" a ballet by Agnes de Mille; the second photo section ends with several photographs depicting the televising of ballet. It is a fascinating collection of photographs. The written articles are quite varied. Review the Contents page in the picture provided above, or read the Table of Contents below. CONTENTS : ** Through the Looking-Glass - by Ralph Hill ** The Art of Conducting - by John Barbirolli ** On Listening - by J. L. Cowan ** The Influence of Jazz on English Composers - by Rex Harris ** Look and Listen - by Edward Pickering ** Audience on the Proms - by George Dannatt ** Personality Corner - by C. B. Rees ** Brains Trust - by Julian Herbage **New Books - by Robin Hull ** New Gramophone Records - by Alec Robertson ** Music of the Film - by Scott Goddard ** Music over the Air - by Stanley Bayliss ** Opera in London - by Stephen Williams ** Ballet in London - by Arnold Haskell ** Concerts in London - by George Dannatt ** Music in Scotland - by Stewart Deas ** Music in Liverpool - by A. K. Holland ** Music in Manchester - by J. H. Elliott ** Music in Birmingham - by John Waterhouse. TITLE : Penguin Music Magazine No. 2 EDITOR : Ralph Hill IMPRINT : Penguin Books PLACE : Harmondsworth, Middlesex, England DATE : 1947 (May 1947 ) EDITION : First Edition STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS: Small periodical in paperback format; Illustrated with photographs; 96 pages + 4 pages of ads; 5" x 8" decorated stiff card wraps (Dancing penguin on front). CONDITION -- NEAR VERY GOOD --This book is previously owned, but clean and serviceable with the following noted : EXTERIOR ? Modest weathering and surface rub, especially to the rear cover which has scattered smudging (ink?) ; there is toning about the edges; spine is clear with no creasing. BINDING ? Solid as can be expected . no leaves are detached or loose - slight splay to fore-edge. INTERIOR ? The paper is unavoidably toned (to be expected from immediate post war production). Basically the interior is clean and presentable, toning considered. The photographs display nicely. England had just come out of the Second World War, and production materials, such as paper were still in short supply. The quality of paper reflects that. Because of this such publications are often fragile, and proper care should be taken when handling them.

(price-clipped) [light shelfwear, age-toning to edges of text block, one-time owner's signature on ffep; jacket is unevenly sun-browned (with notable darkening/fading to spine), with a couple of tiny edge-tears, one slightly ragged 1.25-inch tear at upper front hinge, minor paper loss at spine extremities]. An amalgamation of 17 theatre pieces of varying lengths (mostly of the one-act variety, although a couple of them are roughly 50 pages in length and divided into scenes), each of which is accompanied by a brief introductory essay in which Saroyan expounds upon the circumstances of its creation, discusses the ideas underlying it, tells some anecdote, or just generally rambles on. (Some of these are almost as long as the pieces they introduce, and I daresay some of them are more entertaining, too.) And Saroyan, being given as always to exuberant excess, has included both an Introduction and a Preface. The most notable title in the collection is probably "Hello Out There," which was adapted as a short film in 1949 which has the distinction of being the last thing directed by James Whale.
