First edition. [40]pp. With 12 engraved plates (11 after designs by Talbot) and seven terminal leaves of publisher's advertisements. Printed on rectos only. Original publisher's brown cloth, lettered in gilt to spine and upper board, A.E.G. Minor shelf-wear. Spotted. An attractively illustrated edition of Thomas Gray's (1716- 1771) popular Pindaric Ode, edited by bibliographer and librarian to the Duke of Bedford, John Martin (1791-1855), who, in his prefatory remarks lavishes his illustrator, Caroline Jane Stuart Talbot (d. 1876), with well-deserved praise. Talbot was the author of Parochial Mission-Women: their work, and its fruits (1862), but appears not to have been involved with any further publications. Size: 8vo.
