First edition. vii, 165pp. This is Graham Greene's first collection of short stories, with The Basement Room, I Spy, A Chance For Mr Lever and Proof Positive seeing their first publication in any form. The Basement Room is recognised as Greene's most successful short story, and was adapted in 1948 into the Oscar nominated film, The Fallen Idol directed by Carol Reed. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards together with patchy loss of colour from water damage on about 1" of the fore edge of both boards. The top corners and top of the spine are lightly bumped and the spine is very slightly cocked. The contents are tight and clean with a name, place and date (1947) written on the front free endpaper. About 1/2" of the fore edge of the fixed front and rear endpapers are stained red where colour has been taken from the cloth binding. There is some lighter staining on the fore edge of the free endpapers.

The Cresset Press was founded as an independent press in 1927 by Dennis Cohen, and in its early years producing a number of handsome deluxe editions, of which the best known today is Gulliver's Travels decorated by Rex Whistler (1930).
