Reddish boards with brown leaf decorations and brown title on cover have light soiling/rubbing with light bumping at corners. Brown spine has wear at front gutter with a 2.5" split at bottom spine. Second endpaper has a tasteful ownership plate. The 131 pages are clean, tight and unmarked with small spots on fore edges. This is a series of poems by Gordon and Page from an African American viewpoint and using dialect.

On page 1 there is a pencil gift inscription to New york heiress Gwendoline Caldwell, dated Paris 1902. An ex Westminster Public Library copy with several stamps, especially to verso of title page, a Brentano's of Paris booksellers plate, and a German bookplate to front pastedown featuring the coat of arms of the Zedtwitz family. Hardcover. First edition. 131pp. Duodecimo [18.5 cm] 1/4 brown cloth with decorative cloth covered boards, a gilt stamped title on the spine, and a brown ink stamped title on the front cover. Decorative endsheets. Good. The extremities are mildly darkened, rubbed and stained. The edges of the spine and covers are subtly bumped. Slight spine lean. The top edge of the text block is darkened. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown, and there is a former owner's name on the front flyleaf. The text block is cracked at the beginning. Mildly browned pages. Armistead Churchill Gordon was a Virginia lawyer who also wrote prose and poetry.

Subtle floral pattern on left margin of front cover. As issued, no dust jacket. Octavo. A.C. Gordon was a profound lawyer, writer, and author, who received an honorary of Doctor of Laws degree from the College of William & Mary in 1906 and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Washington and Lee University in 1923. He was a president of The Virginia Bar Association from 1920-21. In this collection of poems, he surfaces the various horrors experienced by enslaved African-Americans through Black dialects. He relays themes of Black oral history, tradition, culture, and life before the abolition of slavery. Ex-library copy with typical markings. Boards are minorly rubbed and show edge wear with slight fraying at head and tail of spine and along the lower edges. Text, printed on heavy stock, is clean and unmarked and binding is tight, overall in very good condition.
