Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 55 pages. There are two ownership signatures on the front paste down; the other fault is with four hinges: the one along the titles in the Forum series has been reinforced with clear tape; ditto the hinge along the copyright page and between pages 8-9, though here the tape is missing leaving only the vertical stain; the hinge along the title page is cracked, though the binding remains very good and there are minor neat pencil annotation along the blank edge of page 37. despite these faults, it remains an attractive copy. Includes two full page sketches by Low, one of Wells, one of Belloc. "Mr. Belloc Objects to "The Outline of History" is a 1926 short book written by the British novelist H. G. Wells as a rebuttal of the criticism of historian Hilaire Belloc. In 1926, Belloc published his A Companion to Mr. Wells's "Outline of History" as a critique of Wells' earlier historical textbook, The Outline of History. A devout Roman Catholic, Belloc was deeply offended by Wells' treatment of Christianity in The Outline." (Wikipedia).

First British edition of Wellsâ polemical defense of The Outline of History against Hilaire Bellocâs criticisms. Octavo, original publisher's cloth, illustrated. From the collection of British science fiction author Christopher Priest. Priestâs most famous works include The Inverted World (1974), the interconnected âDream Archipelagoâ series, and The Prestige (1995), which was adapted into the 2006 Academy Award nominee film of the same name by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Caine. Very good in a good dust jacket. Mr. Belloc Objects to âThe Outline of Historyâ (1926) by H. G. Wells is a spirited polemical exchange arising from Hilaire Bellocâs sharp critique of Wellsâ ambitious historical survey, The Outline of History. In this compact yet pointed work, Wells defends his interpretation of world history against Bellocâs Catholic and distributist objections, turning what began as review and rebuttal into a broader debate about historiography, religion, and the philosophical foundations of civilization. The text captures a moment of intellectual confrontation between two formidable public thinkers, illuminating the tensions between secular progressivism and traditionalist critique in the interwar period. At once argumentative and revealing, it stands as a vivid example of early twentieth-century literary controversy conducted on grand ideological terms.
