Alfred Döblin, novel·lista i assagista alemany nascut a Szczecin (Stettin) l'any 1878, es va criar, va anar a l'escola i més tard va exercir la medicina i la psiquiatria a Berlín, en el districte de l'Alexanderplatz. El 1933 va haver d'exiliar-se a França i l'any 1940 als Estats Units. En acabar la guerra va tornar a Alemanya i va morir a Emmendingen l'any 1957. Aquest llibre va rebre el premi Crítica Serra d'Or de traducció l'any 1988.
