Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine. See scans and description. The Sporting News, 2006. High School Hoops 2006 (Sporting News Rise 06). Quarto, photo-illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 128 pp. Fine; no notable flaws whatsoever. Within a wink of As New. See scans. A very scarce production in any condition; the 2006 high school basketball issue of the now-formally-defunct Sporting News, which was for so long one of the most celebrated- and award-winning - sports periodicals in the country. Though its new owners do still publish Fantasy Football and Fantasy Basketball annuals, it has, as a hard-copy periodical sports publication, fallen off the familiar cliff into internet ghost-existence, as have so many struggling publications. It is now (since 2012) officially on the Defunct Magazines of the United States list. Among the many 2006 High School basketball star covered within are the profiled Derrick Rose, O.J. Mayo, Kevin Love, Bill Walker, Michael Beasley, Tyreke Evans, Kyle Singler, Eric Gordon, Renardo Sidney, Lance Stephenson, and Jerryd Bayless. See scans. Rare in any condition. This example is Fine. Condition: Fine. First Edition. First edition. Publisher's off-white stapled wrappers printed in navy, The Evening Herald advertisement to rear wrapper. About fine, with a tiny crease to lower right corner of front wrapper and previous owner's name written lightly in red pencil at top of front wrapper. Overall, an excellent and fresh copy. In this booklet, Billy Evans outlines the rules of the game, addressing such issues as "Dropped Third Strike," "Passing a Preceding Runner," and "Plays Requiring Appeal." Additionally, there's a Q&A formatted "Plays that Puzzle" section at the back. Billy Evans umpired in the American League from 1906 to 1927 during the Deadball Era. While renowned for his fairness and "ability to bear no malice," he famously got in a fist fight with Ty Cobb under the stands in a 1921 game. Off the field, Evans wrote newspaper columns and authored an important umpiring manual titled Umpiring From the Inside (1947). Evans was inducted posthumously into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, making him just the third umpire to receive that honor.

First edition, first printing, presentation copy from the author to historian, record-producer, and pre-eminent collector of jazz photography, Frank Driggs, inscribed warmly on the half-title, "Pays off old scores! To Frank Driggs with my gratitude for his great help and contribution in this tribut [sic] to Bud, Friendship always. Francis Paudras 24/10/86." Inscribed copies are certainly uncommon. Superb biographical essay on the legendary pianist Bud Powell by his friend and Paris protector. Paudras's relationship with the troubled Powell, as portrayed in this book, became the basis for Bernard Tavernier's film Round Midnight. The book forms a pair with his archival essay on Charlie Parker, To Bird with Love (1981). Quarto. Profusely illustrated. Original white cloth with Powell's autograph in blind to the front board. With dust jacket. Very good in very slightly rubbed jacket with one or two minor chips.
