Add to basketFirst edition, first printing, presentation copy from the author to historian, record-producer, and pre-eminent collector of jazz photography, Frank Driggs, inscribed warmly on the half-title, "Pays off old scores! To Frank Driggs with my gratitude for his great help and contribution in this tribut [sic] to Bud, Friendship always. Francis Paudras 24/10/86." Inscribed copies are certainly uncommon. Superb biographical essay on the legendary pianist Bud Powell by his friend and Paris protector. Paudras's relationship with the troubled Powell, as portrayed in this book, became the basis for Bernard Tavernier's film Round Midnight. The book forms a pair with his archival essay on Charlie Parker, To Bird with Love (1981). Quarto. Profusely illustrated. Original white cloth with Powell's autograph in blind to the front board. With dust jacket. Very good in very slightly rubbed jacket with one or two minor chips.

Add to basketFirst pressing, Japanese import (with embossed stamp to lower right corner of front cover); signed boldly in black marker pen by Evans (adding the date "74"), bassist Eddie Gomez (closing his signature with a nice thumbnail sketch of a double bass), and drummer Marty Morell. Albums signed by the trio - one of the finest in jazz history - are certainly not common. Evans's teaming with Gomez and Morell was relatively new at the time of recording in March '69 - in fact this was the drummer's studio debut with the group - but became his settled establishment for a number of years, before Eliot Zigmund replaced Morell in 1974-5. Scott Yanow on AllMusic notes that flautist Jeremy Steig's playing resembles that of Herbie Mann with Evans on Nirvana (1964). "Both flautists were always open to the influences of pop and rock, although in both of their collaborations with Evans, the music is very much on the pianist's turf. With the exception of Evans' 'Time Out for Chris' and the 'Spartacus Love Theme,' the songs performed on this date would fit securely in the Miles Davis repertoire of the late '50s. Steig is in particularly fine form on the program which includes tunes such as 'Straight No Chaser,' 'Autumn Leaves,' and 'So What'". Very minor shelfwear to cover otherwise sharp and bright; disc in excellent condition.
